Evaluating Impacts of Racism in Academic Departments on the Mental Health of Global Majority Students in the Midwest.

Despite increasing racial diversity in higher education in the United States (US), racially minoritized students (i.e., students from the Global Majority; GM) continue to experience stress related to discrimination and structural oppression. Evaluating and addressing racism in higher education across multiple levels (e.g., distal and proximal) is critical to student success. This study tested two complementary approaches to understand associations between departmental racism and GM students' mental health. First, Hatzenbuehler's Psychological Mediation Minority Stress Theory was tested by exam

Antimicrobial resistance and climate change in the One Health food safety paradigm: A global perspective.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and climate change are two converging global health challenges that threaten food safety and public health. The One Health framework emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in tackling AMR. However, the extent to which climate change influences AMR dynamics across these sectors remains underexplored. This systematic review aims to synthesize recent evidence on the relationship between AMR, climate change, and food safety using a One Health approach, focusing on the prevalence and distribution of resistant bacteria across human…

Global prevalence of imposter syndrome in health service providers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Imposterism, also known as imposter syndrome or imposter phenomenon, is an emerging phenomenon that has attracted much attention in recent years. Given that this phenomenon is common among high-achieving individuals and its identification often overlaps with symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout, the aim of this study is to determine the global prevalence of imposter syndrome and its associated factors. METHODS: For this study, PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched, and all relevant studies we

The dynamic preparedness metric: results from a global and regional analysis of health emergency preparedness.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored limitations in current methods for assessing country-level health emergency preparedness, which often overlook essential factors like ongoing epidemics, natural disasters, conflicts, or community trust. Addressing this, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Dynamic Preparedness Metric (DPM), a composite measure that assesses epidemic risk by accounting for hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacity, offering insights for improving country-level health emergency preparedness. METHODS: Our analysis tested the DPM's effectiveness in suppo

Cardiac Rehabilitation in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease-Challenges, Inequalities, and Opportunities for Global Health.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone of secondary prevention in coronary heart disease, supported by robust evidence and classified as a Class I recommendation in international guidelines. Despite its proven benefits in reducing morbidity, mortality, and improving quality of life, CR remains strikingly underutilized worldwide, revealing a paradox of high-level evidence with low-level implementation. The INTERASPIRE study highlights this global gap, showing that many patients are neither referred nor adhere to CR programs, and that profound inequities persist across regions and socioeco

Mucormycosis and COVID-19: Unraveling the Interplay of Fungal Infection in a Global Health Crisis: An Overview.

The healthcare system has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in an increase in secondary and co-infections among patients. Factors like pulmonary damage and weakened immune systems make patients more susceptible to fungal infections. Mucormycosis, an opportunistic fungal infection, prospers in environments with limited oxygen, and elevated glucose levels due to conditions such as diabetes and steroid use, as well as in acidic environments from metabolic acidosis and diabetic ketoacidosis, where it demonstrates heightened germination ability. Recognizing these complicatio

Evaluating the Immunogenicity, Efficacy, and Effectiveness of Recombinant Zoster Vaccine for Global Public Health Policy.

Background: Herpes zoster (HZ) is a painful neurocutaneous disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) is becoming increasingly incorporated into national vaccination schedules. We aimed to evaluate RZV from a global public health policy perspective. Methods: We performed a rapid review of studies evaluating the immunogenicity, efficacy, and effectiveness of RZV for protection against HZ and associated complications. We searched PubMed for English-language studies published between 7 August 2012 and 30 September 2023. Included studies reported vaccine eff

Harnessing the nutritional profile and health benefits of millets: a solution to global food security problems.

India is dealing with both nutritional and agricultural issues. The maximum area of agricultural land with irrigation capabilities has been largely utilized, while the amount of dry land is expanding. The influence is distinct on farmer's livelihoods and earnings, which ultimately affects nutritional security. In order to attain nutritional security and the goal of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals), millets are sustainable solutions, with respect to high nutritional content, bioactive and medicinal properties, and climate resilience. The nutrient profile of millet includes 60%-70% carbohydra

The global prevalence of mental health disorders among runaway and homeless youth: A meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis was performed to identify the pooled prevalence of mental health disorders (MHDs) among runaway and homeless youth (RHY). Relevant studies published between December 1, 1985, and October 1, 2023, were identified in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. A preliminary screening of 11,266 papers resulted in the inclusion of 101 studies. The pooled-prevalence estimates were obtained using a random-effects model. The findings showed varying lifetime prevalence rates of MHDs: 47% (conduct disorders and psychological distress), 43% (depression), 34% (majo

A Journey in Science: Molecular vaccines for global child health in troubled times of anti-science.

My scientific life in translational medicine runs in two parallel, yet often converging paths. The first, is four-decade-long commitment to develop new vaccines for parasitic and neglected tropical diseases, as well as pandemic threats. This includes a vaccine for human hookworm infection that I began as an MD-PhD student in New York City in the 1980s, and a new low-cost COVID vaccine that reached almost 100 million people in low- and middle-income countries. Alongside this life in scientific research, is one in public engagement for vaccine and neglected disease diplomacy to ensure that peopl

Dengue outbreak 2023 in Bangladesh: From a local concern to a global public health issue.

Dengue, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, has become a substantial public health issue in Bangladesh. The high population density and subtropical-tropical climate of the nation create conducive environments for the transmission of the virus. The recent increase in dengue cases in Bangladesh prompts an inquiry into the potential for the virus to progress into an epidemic manifestation. Bangladesh is prone to dengue outbreaks due to a multitude of contributing factors. To commence, the virus is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, and climate change is contributing to the expa

Indicators for National and Global Monitoring of Girls' Menstrual Health and Hygiene: Development of a Priority Shortlist.

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for adolescent girls' health, education, and gender equality, few countries monitor MHH. MHH needs remain underprioritized, and progress achieved through policies, programs, or investments go unmeasured. This article reports the systematic development of an indicator shortlist to monitor adolescent girls' MHH at the national and global levels across low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: A core group of MHH researchers and practitioners collaborated with stakeholders from three countries with demonstrated commitment to

Tracking global resources and capacity for health research: time to reassess strategies and investment decisions.

The COVID-19 pandemic and more recently the Monkeypox outbreak emphasize the urgency and importance of improving the availability and equitable distribution of resources for health research across rich and poor countries. Discussions about the persistent imbalances in resource allocation for health research between rich and poor countries are not new, but little or no progress has been made in redressing these imbalances over the years. This is critical not only for emergency preparedness, but for the worlds' ability to improve population health in an equitable manner. Concerned with the lack

Recent Advances in Research and Management of Human Monkeypox Virus: An Emerging Global Health Threat.

In 2003, the United States saw an epidemic of monkeypox that was later traced back to rodents of West Africa infected with the monkeypox virus (MPXV). Disease in the United States seemed less severe than the smallpox-like disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In this study, researchers analyzed data from Central Africa: two distinct MPXV clades were confirmed by sequencing the genomes of MPXV isolates from Western Africa, the United States, and Central Africa. By comparing open reading frames across MPXV clades, scientists can infer which virus proteins might account for the o

Mental health and resilience in the Irish defense forces during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The Irish Defense Forces (DF) responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and national public health crisis by deploying personnel to aid domestic civil authorities in medical and care settings, contact tracing, logistics, and operations. Current research on COVID-19 reveals increased psychological distress among frontline workers and the general public. Resilience has previously been associated with lower levels of psychological distress. This study sets out to test these associations, and to examine mental health differences between DF personnel deployed in Ireland on pandemic-related duties (DIPD) a

[THE ISSUE OF THE IMPACT OF RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES ON PUBLIC HEALTH AND COUNTERMEASURES FOR RADIATION EXPOSURE AS A GLOBAL PROBLEM].

The widespread use in today's world of radioactive sources d in energy, medicine, engineering and construction, for contaminant tracking and food sterilization increases the likelihood of accidental exposure. The use of ionizing radiation and radioactive elements can directly or indirectly cause life-threatening complications, such as oncopathology, radiation burns, and impaired immunity. Pollution of the environment with radioactive elements and depletion of the ozone layer also contribute to an increase in the level of radiation exposure. To protect the health of the population living in con

Antimicrobial resistance in the globalized food chain: a One Health perspective applied to the poultry industry.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a major global public health crisis. The food animal industry will face escalating challenges to increase productivity while minimizing AMR, since the global demand for animal protein has been continuously increasing and food animals play a key role in the global food supply, particularly broiler chickens. As chicken products are sources of low-cost, high-quality protein, poultry production is an important economic driver for livelihood and survival in developed and developing regions. The globalization of the food supply, markedly in the poultry industry
