Bird harvesting practices and knowledge, risk perceptions, and attitudes regarding avian influenza among Canadian First Nations subsistence hunters: implications for influenza pandemic plans.

BACKGROUND: There is concern of avian influenza virus (AIV) infections in humans. Subsistence hunters may be a potential risk group for AIV infections as they frequently come into close contact with wild birds and the aquatic habitats of birds while harvesting. This study aimed to examine if knowledge and risk perception of avian influenza influenced the use of protective measures and attitudes about hunting influenza-infected birds among subsistence hunters. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, a cross-sectional survey was conducted with current subsistence hunte

Hand hygiene versus additional non-sterile gloves and gowns use to prevent sepsis in preterm infants colonized with multi-resistant drug bacteria: the study protocol of the cluster-randomized, cross-over, non-inferiority BALTIC trial.

BACKGROUND: Infections are highly relevant for neonatal mortality and long-term morbidities in survivors. Therefore, it is an urgent need to optimize and evaluate infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies. Several infection outbreaks in German neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) required rapid responses by hospitals and improved future preparedness. As a consequence, German authorities recommended weekly colonization screening on NICUs. This screening aims to detect multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) and bacteria with high transmissibility. According to these guidelines, infants co

Phenol for pilonidal sinus disease: a nationwide survey of practice patterns and safety gaps among surgeons in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Phenol is widely used as a minimally invasive treatment for pilonidal sinus disease (PSD); however, its clinical application is characterized by substantial heterogeneity in indications, technique, dosing, and safety practices. Despite its routine use in outpatient settings, standardized safety frameworks addressing occupational exposure, environmental controls, and dose documentation are lacking. These gaps may have important implications for both patient outcomes and workplace safety. This nationwide survey aimed to characterize real-world phenol practice patterns among surgeons

Standby divers in warm to hot environments suffer heat stress and hypohydration.

Standby divers must be fully dressed in the appropriate ensemble during military and commercial diving operations. These garments are often fully encapsulating and may result in heat stress and hypohydration when worn in warm environments. We examined the physiologic responses to heat in subjects wearing a Viking HD drysuit during 1 hour of exposure to dry-bulb temperatures of 33°C, 36°C, 39°C, and 42°C. Euhydrated subjects donned a heavy rubber drysuit and chemical protective gloves over a lightweight base layer. The drysuit was appropriate for contaminated water diving with integrated boots

Measures to prevent cricket injuries: an overview.

Cricket is a major international sport, generally played in British Common-wealth nations. Although strictly a non-contact sport, injuries in cricket can result in a number of ways. In high level cricket, overuse injuries are common and related to the physical demands of the sport, particularly in the delivery of the ball. The bowling action involves repetitive twisting, extension and rotation of the trunk at the same time as absorption of large ground reaction forces over a short period of time. These movements, if performed incorrectly or too frequently, can lead to overuse injuries of the b

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome associated with hemophilia in the United States.

Persons with hemophilia and other coagulation disorders were at risk for infection with HIV as a result of receiving blood products, particularly concentrated clotting factors. Because these products are now donor-screened and heat-treated to inactivate HIV, the risk of further infection in this population has been minimized. However, before the introduction of these interventions, many persons with hemophilia had been infected. As of Jan 4, 1988, 463 cases of hemophilia-associated AIDS had been reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Most patients had severe hemophilia and received comme
