Clinical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of Eggerthella lenta infection over a 5-year trend at a university hospital in Japan.

Eggerthella lenta (E. lenta) is known to cause intra-abdominal and anaerobic bloodstream infections. However, clinical insights and informat … d meropenem were 1.4% and 0%, respectively. E. lenta should be considered when blood cultures yield gram-positive rods in community-acquired intra-abdominal infections. Effective treatment involves both antimicrobial agents and surgical interventions.

Septic pulmonary emboli caused by Tsukamurella inchonensis: A case report.

The genus Tsukamurella is a fastidious, environmental organism that potentially causes various infections in humans. Due to the morphologica … uggested multiple emboli at the bilateral, peripheral lungs, indicating SPE. Blood culture detected Gram-positive rods, to which matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry failed to identify. Then, we attempted to characterize it by 16S rRNA sequence, which suggested the organism to be Tsukamurella species but resulted in low resona …

[Clinical bacteriological analysis of Vibrio vulnificus infection--a report of five case].

Clinical features in Vibrio infection are generally represented by gastrointestinal involvements such as food poisoning, and its prognosis is usually good. However, Vibrio vulnificus infection not uncommonly causes serious problems including sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis of the extremities, and other conditions, sometimes resulting in fatal outcome. In the present study, we analyzed clinical microbiological aspects of five cases with V. vulnificus infection. All the strains of V. vulnificus isolated in five patients are oxidase-positive Gram negative rods presenting comma-like configuration, w

Clinico-therapeutic profile of pyogenic liver abscess.

Nineteen consecutive patients of pyogenic liver abscess (13 males, 6 females, mean age 45.2 +/- 6, 5 years) were studied over a period of 5 years for the clinical profile and therapeutic efficacy of percutaneous aspiration. Majority of them presented with spiking fever (94.7%), pain over right upper quadrant of abdomen (53.8%) and often with prostration and shock (31.6%). The onset has been rather acute in patients with multiple abscesses (7 cases). Ascites (10.5%), clubbing of fingers (15.8%) and splenomegaly (10.5%) were observed in cases with long duration of illness. There has been the pol

[Clinical observation of bacterial isolates from urine specimens of outpatients].

Changes of bacterial isolates from urine specimens of outpatients with urinary tract infections (UTI) from 1977 through 1984 were studied. Organisms which were isolated from patients with bacteriuria of over 10(3) bacteria per ml of urine regardless of grade of pyuria were studied. The incidence of UTI, especially that of acute cystitis was decreased during the recent 8 years. E. coli was the most predominant isolate in acute UTI with an isolation frequency of over 70% every year, followed by S. epidermidis nearly every year. Citrobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., P. mirabilis and S. aureus were a

Dynamics of the Bacillus subtilis Min System.

Division site selection is a vital process to ensure generation of viable offspring. In many rod-shaped bacteria, a dynamic protein system, termed the Min system, acts as a central regulator of division site placement. The Min system is best studied in Escherichia coli, where it shows a remarkable oscillation from pole to pole with a time-averaged density minimum at midcell. Several components of the Min system are conserved in the Gram-positive model organism Bacillus subtilis However, in B. subtilis, it is commonly believed that the system forms a stationary bipolar gradient from the cell po

Polymicrobial Osteomyelitis in a Patient With Isolation of Trueperella bernardiae: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: Trueperella bernardiae is a Gram-positive rod that has been described as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. In a significant number of documented cases, infections with Trueperella bernardiae have been associated with polymicrobial infections, which highlight the fact that important bacteria-bacteria relations might be involved in the natural course of these infections, especially in patients with chronic disease courses and a history of multiple antibiotic treatments. Case Presentation: We present a case of a 24-year-old woman with a 3-year history of a chron

Target affinities of faropenem to and its impact on the morphology of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Faropenem is a new oral beta-lactam antibiotic unique from carbapenems and other available beta-lactams. Determinants of the in vitro activity of beta-lactam antibiotics include affinity to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and beta-lactamase stability. In this study, the binding affinity of faropenem to various PBPs and its impact on the morphology of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were evaluated. In general, faropenem demonstrated high binding affinity to high-molecular-weight PBPs but low affinity to low-molecular-weight PBPs. In S. aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, faropene

Phenylalanine 664 of dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP) 7 and Phenylalanine 671 of DPP11 mediate preference for P2-position hydrophobic residues of a substrate.

Dipeptidyl peptidases (DPPs) are crucial for the energy metabolism in Porphyromonas gingivalis, a Gram-negative proteolytic and asaccharolytic anaerobic rod causing chronic periodontitis. Three DPPs, DPPIV specific for Pro, DPP7 for hydrophobic residues and DPP11 for Asp/Glu at the P1 position, are expressed in the bacterium. Like DPP7, DPP11 belongs to the S46 protease family, and they share 38.7% sequence identity. Although DPP11 is preferential for hydrophobic residues at the P2 position, it has been reported that DPP7 has no preference at the P2 position. In the present study, we defined t

Characterization and Assessment of Iron-Reducing Capacity of Cultivable Bacteria from Iron-Toxic Rice Soils in Burkina Faso.

Iron toxicity is a major constraint for rice production, particularly in lowland ecosystems where reduced iron (Fe[II]) accumulates due to activities by iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). This study investigated the dominant cultivable IRB strains in three iron-rich rice-growing areas of Burkina Faso: Moussodougou, Tiefora, and Kou Valley. Soil Fe(II) concentrations and IRB abundance were quantified using colorimetric and most probable number (MPN) methods to highlight the process of Fe(II) generation. Bacteria were isolated and characterized based on morphological traits (cell shape, Gram staining

Composite Coating for the Food Industry Based on Fluoroplast and ZnO-NPs: Physical and Chemical Properties, Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity, Cytotoxicity.

Bacterial contamination of meat products during its preparation at the enterprise is an important problem for the global food industry. Cutting boards are one of the main sources of infection. In order to solve this problem, the creation of mechanically stable coatings with antibacterial activity is one of the most promising strategies. For such a coating, we developed a composite material based on "liquid" Teflon and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The nanoparticles obtained with laser ablation had a rod-like morphology, an average size of ~60 nm, and a ζ-potential of +30 mV. The polymer

Characteristics and recognition of early infections in patients treated with commercial anti-CD19 CAR-T cells.

The characteristics of infections following chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells targeting CD19 in real-word population are obscure. We analyzed infections' characteristics in the first month among consecutive patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (n = 60, median age, 69.3 years), treated with commercial CAR-T cells. ECOG performance status (PS) was 2-3 in most patients (58%). Infections were observed in 45% of patients (16, 27%, bacterial infections, and 14, 23%, viral infections). Bacterial infection included clinically documented infection in 7 (Pneumonia, n = 5; periodon

[Fundamental and clinica evaluation of cefoxitin in children (author's transl)].

Fundamental and clinical evaluations were made on cefoxitin, a new cephamycin antibiotic, and the following results were obtained. 1) MIC of the drug to clinical isolates was determined and was higher than that of cefazolin to Gram-positive bacilli. Among Gram-negative rods, the drug showed a sufficient antibacterial activity even to cefazolin-resistant strains. However, the MIC of cefoxitin to cefazolin-sensitive strains tended to be higher than that of cefazolin. 2) As to the passage of cefoxitin in experimental staphylococcal meningitis in rabbits, a percentage of CSF/serum ratio of AUC was

Identification and Characterization of Two Novel Members of the Family Eubacteriaceae, Anaerofustis butyriciformans sp. nov. and Pseudoramibacter faecis sp. nov., Isolated from Human Feces.

Members of Eubacteriaceae are involved in host health and diseases. Two Gram-stain-positive, strictly anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, and rod-shaped bacterial strains, HA2171T and HA2172T, were isolated from the feces of Chinese healthy donors. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, HA2171T and HA2172T belonged to the family Eubacteriaceae. Physiological and biochemical characterizations indicated that HA2171T and HA2172T were neutrophilic, mesophilic, and tolerant to low-concentration NaCl. The major cellular fatty acids (>10.0%) of HA2171T were C16:0, C14:0, C18:1ω7c, and C17:0 2-OH, an

The first case of deep neck abscess due to Filifactor alocis co-infected with Eggerthia catenaformis, Parvimonas micra, and Streptococcusconstellatus.

Filifactor alocis, an anaerobic Gram-positive rod, has garnered interest from its association with periodontal disease. Extraoral infections by F. alocis are rare; only seven cases have been reported. We report the first case in which we identified F. alocis as one of the causative organisms of a deep neck abscess. A 71-year-old male on hemodialysis came to our hospital with a fever and left buccal pain. The patient's left neck was swollen, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed an abscess with gas extending from the left cheek to the deep neck. We diagnosed the patient with a deep n

The emerging oral pathogen, Filifactor alocis, extends the functional lifespan of human neutrophils.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory infectious disease that affects the integrity of tooth-supporting tissues and has adverse systemic consequences. Advances in sequencing technologies have uncovered organisms that are exclusively found in high numbers in periodontal lesions, such as the gram-positive anaerobic rod, Filifactor alocis. F. alocis can manipulate neutrophil effector functions, which allows the organism to survive within these granulocytes. Several neutrophil functions have been tested in the context of F. alocis challenge, but the effect of the organism on neutrophil apoptosis
