Dystrophin is normally expressed in a number of tissues including muscle, brain and the outer plexiform layer of the retina. In Duchenne and … re examined by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Dystrophin was localized in both inner and outer hair cells with staining patterns which were qualitatively similar with both antibodies. In the outer hair cells labelling of the lateral wall was especially distinctive. The synaptic region of both hair cell types was also strongly labelled.

Dependent on the nature and intensity of the causative damage, the clinical picture of diffuse loss of hair varies considerably. We give a review on 4 typical clinical forms with different courses and degrees of hair loss. The differentiation of these variants may help to estimate the possible causes and prognosis and avoid unnecessary investigations.

A young woman presented with ocular discomfort after handling her pet tarantula. Multiple fine hairs were detected on the eyelids, in the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, and in the corneal epithelium and stroma. In addition, foreign body granulomas were found in the conjunctiva. Six months later, peripheral chorioretinal lesions were seen. The clinical and histologic findings in this case closely resemble the findings in ophthalmia nodosa caused by caterpillar hairs.

The chronic toxicological and carcinogenic potential following skin painting in mice was evaluated for nine oxidative and three nonoxidative hair dyes. Groups of male and female Swiss mice were treated one time weekly for at least 20 mo with one dose level of each dye. Analyses were made of the scalp and hair lipids of 67 test persons. These were the most important results: 1. Seborrhoea is caused on one hand by a high secretion performance of the sebaceous glands. A further cause is that a longer period of time passes before a constant lipid amount is established. 2. The author presents his own observations on hair transplant procedures in black patients. With slight modifications in the manner of obtaining donor autografts, the integrity of the hair shafts and papillae are maintained. Genrally, the aesthetic results are comparable to those obtained in white patients and often are achieved with considerably fewer autografts.
