Selective diagnosis of diabetes using Pt-functionalized WO3 hemitube networks as a sensing layer of acetone in exhaled breath.

Thin-walled WO(3) hemitubes and catalytic Pt-functionalized WO(3) hemitubes were synthesized via a polymeric fiber-templating route and used as exhaled breath sensing layers for potential diagnosis of halitosis and diabetes through the detection of H(2)S and CH(3)COCH(3), respectively. Pt-functionalized WO(3) hemitubes with wall thickness of 60 nm exhibited superior acetone sensitivity (R(air)/R(gas) = 4.11 at 2 ppm) with negligible H(2)S response, and pristine WO(3) hemitubes showed a 4.90-fold sensitivity toward H(2)S with minimal acetone-sensing characteristics. The detection limit (R(air)/…

The role of Solobacterium moorei in oral malodour.

This study aims to analyze the correlation between Solobacterium moorei (S. moorei), both on the tongue and in saliva, and several oral malodour- and clinical parameters. Data from 193 patients visiting a halitosis clinic were used for analysis. A questionnaire assessed their general health, allergies, medication, smoking habits and oral hygiene. Following halitosis parameters were recorded: organoleptic score (OLS) (0-5), total concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) (Halimeter), individual concentrations of VSC (Oral Chroma), tongue coating (MTCI, WTCI and mWTCI), salivary parameter…

Faecaloid breath heralding secondary aorto-enteric fistula.

A patient underwent simultaneous abdominal aortic prosthetic replacement and resection of a Meckel diverticulum. He then developed faecaloid breath. Later reoperation for aorto-enteric fistula cured halitosis. We conclude in retrospect that faecaloid breath may herald a secondary aorto-enteric fistula. A pathophysiological mechanism is suggested and discussed.

Effect of Underwater Exercise on Salivary Metabolites of Older Persons With Disability.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Underwater exercise is aimed at preventing aging, maintaining, and improving motor function, and improving physical function. However, its rehabilitation effects have not been well evaluated. In order to gain insight into the molecular basis of its rehabilitation effects, possible changes in the salivary metabolites of four older persons with disability (mean age: 72.5 years) during underwater exercise were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Halitosis was measured by Breathtron; salivary bacterial number by bacterial counter; amino acids by amino acid analyzer; 8-oxoguanine …

Clinical reliability of non-organoleptic oral malodour measurements.

AIM: Measurement of volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) by portable sulphur monitors (Halimeter, OralChroma) is a common practice for diagnosis of oral malodour. In this study, the clinical value of these devices was examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and eighty patients with bad breath complaints attending a halitosis consultation were enrolled. Organoleptic scores were given by a trained and calibrated judge, before measurement of the VSC levels (Halimeter, OralChroma), to avoid any bias. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found between the organoleptic assessment, the Halimeter…

[A glance into the mouth--dental aspects for physicians].

A glance into the mouth at the surgery occasionally confronts the general practitioner or specialist with dental aspects or issues. The nursing-bottle syndrome and injuries from accidents are frequently observed in children. In older patients, mucosal change is not a rare occurrence. A comparatively new field is halitosis and its effective and cause-related treatment.

Solitary psychosis--three cases of monosymptomatic delusion of alimentary stench treated with behavioural psychotherapy.

Three cases of monosymptomatic delusion of alimentary stench are described. Each patient was referred for behaviour therapy as a last resort, after extensive medical investigation for halitosis or flatulence and failure of other psychiatric treatment. Two of the patients showed clinical improvement after treatment, sustained at follow-up. Monosymptomatic delusion is now a treatable condition and is important to diagnosis.

Volatile Sulfur Compounds Produced by the Anaerobic Bacteria Porphyromonas spp. Isolated from the Oral Cavities of Dogs.

Porphyromonas spp. are oral anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria that form black-pigmented colonies on blood agar and produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), and dimethyl sulfide ((CH3)2S), which cause halitosis and the destruction of periodontal tissues. P. gulae is considered the main pathogen involved in periodontal disease in dogs. However, the characteristics of the VSCs produced by P. gulae are unknown. In the present study, VSCs were measured in 26 isolates of P. gulae and some isolates of the other Porphyromonas spp. obtained from…

The rationale and potential for the reduction of oral malodour using Streptococcus salivarius probiotics.

The primary treatment for oral malodour is the reduction of bacterial populations, especially those present on the tongue, by use of a varie … chlorhexidine rinse followed by strain K12 lozenges, the majority (8/13) of subjects with confirmed halitosis maintained reduced breath levels of volatile sulphur compounds for at least 2 weeks. We conclude that probiotic bacterial strains originally sourced from the indigenous oral microbiotas of healthy humans may have potential application as adjuncts fo …
