There are two types of fungi (yeasts and molds) both of which can cause superficial infections of the perionychium. Yeasts (such as Candida albicans) grow as single cells and reproduce by asexual budding. In contrast, molds grow in long filaments, called hyphae. There are approximately 100,000 species of fungi that have been characterized. Most of these are ubiquitous. Fortunately only about 200 are human pathogens, and only a handful are commonly found to be associated with human disease. This article discusses causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common fungal infections of

Five patients with acral chilblains and lupus anticoagulant activity revealed by coagulation analysis are reported. Three patients suffered a systemic lupus erythematosus, and two of them a completely developed antiphospholipid syndrome as well. Another case had chronic cutaneous lupus with only facial discoid lesions, and in the last one the lupus anticoagulant was likely related to a chronic liver infection of hepatitis B virus because she had not erythematous lupus. There are few dermatologic references about chilblain associated to lupus anticoagulant. Certain evidences suggest a pathogeni

An extremely rare case of erythema multiforme associated with dermatophytosis by Trichophyton rubrum infection was reported in a 19-year-old woman. She had a reddish plaque resembling annular ringworm on her left arm. Treatment with an antifungal cream (clotrimazole) on the infected site cleared the condition in three weeks. Spontaneous regression of erythema multiforme in different parts of the body was recognized when the ringworm infection resolved. In recent years, only two cases have been reported in the English literature.

We present a patient in whom histoplasmosis panniculitis developed during steroid therapy for pancytopenia secondary to myelodysplasia. Although the cutaneous manifestations of disseminated histoplasmosis are rare, we review them because of the increasing numbers of organ-transplant patients, as well as other patients with immunodeficiency, including acquired immune deficiency syndrome, in whom the risk of this unusual presentation of histoplasmosis must be considered.

The only common skin disease in the pottery industry is eczematous dermatitis. Low-grade dermatitis, not necessitating absence from work, may affect 5-10% of the workforce. In perhaps only 1% is the condition severe enough to cause significant absence from work and the attendant financial problems. Mostly the problem is that of a cumulative irritant dermatitis associated particularly with wet work. Such a pattern is more common in patients with a history of childhood eczema. As the prognosis of industrial dermatitis is poor, such subjects should be counselled against work that occasions exposu
