This study examined whether coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection experience enhances preventive behaviour (i.e., hand disinfection and mask-wearing), with risk perception acting as a mediating factor. The study included participants aged ≥18 years residing in Japan, enrolled in a 30-wave cohort study conducted from January 2020 to March 2024. Using propensity score matching, 135 pairs of participants with and without infection were extracted, adjusting for dread and unknown risk perception, preventive behaviours, sociopsychological variables, and individual attributes. Comparisons of …

Native joint septic arthritis (SA) is a severe, potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the invasion of synovial fluid and membrane by pathogens, most commonly bacteria. The rising frequency of intra-articular procedures such as joint aspirations and injections has led to increased concern regarding iatrogenic septic arthritis. This mini-review aims to summarize current understanding of the incidence, risk factors, bacterial etiology, and strategies for preventing SA associated with intra-articular procedures. Recent studies report that while iatrogenic SA incidence remains low

BACKGROUND: Pandemics pose extraordinary challenges to health care systems. Breakdowns in infection prevention and control measures during such crises can significantly compromise patient outcomes and facilitate the spread of resistant pathogens. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and impact of bacterial and fungal hospital outbreaks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines and were registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025648727).
RESULTS: A total of 619 outbreak-related cases were identifie

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 has spread rapidly since its discovery in December 2019 in the Chinese province of Hubei, reaching this day all the continents. This scourge is, unfortunately, in lineage with various dangerous outbreaks such as Ebola, Cholera, Spanish flu, American seasonal flu. Until today, the best solution for the moment remains prevention (Social distancing, hand disinfection, use of masks, partial or total sanitary containment, etc.); there is also the emergence of drug treatment (research and development, clinical trials, use on patients). Recent reviews e…

Cryptosporidium, a waterborne protozoan parasite, has a substantial veterinary and medical impact worldwide. This parasite is more often recognized during waterborne outbreaks because of its resistance to chlorine disinfection, small size making it difficult to inactivate/eliminate through filtration, and presence in many animal species including humans. Migratory waterfowl, in addition to acting as mechanical carriers of Cryptosporidium oocysts, can also serve as natural reservoirs of infection by host-specific Cryptosporidium species. For better understanding of the extent of genetic diversi

A prospective study was carried out in a burn unit of a tertiary care referral centre in North India. Patients with 20-70% TBSAB were enrolled. Seventy-one patients developed 59 hospital-acquired infections (HAI); the infection density being 36.2 infections per 1000 patient days. Invasive wound infections were the commonest (33), followed by blood stream infections (22), urinary tract infections (3) and pneumonia (1). Infection contributed to 75% of observed mortality. On logistic regression analysis, infected patients were more likely to die as well as stay longer in the hospital as compared

BACKGROUND: It was previously thought that persons with genetic predispositions to vitiligo develop the condition after exposure to various precipitating environmental factors. However, in many cases, the aggravating factors of vitiligo have not been clearly identified.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the aggravating factors of vitiligo in the working environment and daily life.
METHODS: A total of 489 vitiligo patients were recruited from 10 institutions in South Korea; patients were provided with a questionnaire about environmental factors and behavior patterns in the workplace and in daily life, a

Little is known about opportunistic fungi causing skin lesions in tropical countries such as Panama. We report an 83-year-old man from Chiriquí, Western Panama, with crusted skin lesions covering tumorous masses resembling Bowen's disease of the skin on the dorsum of his right hand. Fungal cultures were obtained on different nutrient media from disinfected superficial skin scrapings and fragments taken from a deep skin biopsy. Deep skin biopsy showed the presence of globose, dark fungal cells in the upper and lower dermis, sometimes in abscesses or giant cells, indicating chromoblastomycosis.

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the nature and frequency of adverse reactions to materials and procedures among orthodontists and their patients. A questionnaire about this topic was mailed to practicing members of the Norwegian Orthodontic Society, of which 137 (about 75%) responded together with 127 chairside assistants. About half of the orthodontic personnel had experienced adverse reactions. The majority of the problems were dermatoses, comprising dryness, redness, itching, thickening, reduced tactile sensitivity, fissuring, soreness/desquamation and pain of hands an

BACKGROUND: While transmission of multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in clinical settings is traditionally attributed to contact with contaminated surfaces and medical devices, growing evidence suggests that other elements of the hospital environment, particularly handwash basins, may also act as reservoirs of MDROs. However, the airborne transmission of MDROs from handwash basins under real-world conditions remains poorly characterized.
METHODS: Aerosol and surface sampling were conducted in five inpatient hospital rooms and three non-clinical restrooms during faucet operation and under

We studied the effects of a combined water, sanitation, handwashing, and nutritional supplementation (WSH + N) intervention on Shigella/EIEC IgG immune development among Bangladeshi children enrolled in a cluster-randomized trial. We used a bacterial display assay to measure IgG-specific binding to Shigella/EIEC Ipa proteins (IpaA, IpaB, IpaC, IpaD, and IpaH) from a substudy of 120 children (60 intervention, 60 control) at median ages 3, 14, and 28 months. We found that the WSH + N intervention did not impact IgG seroprevalence (56% vs 53%, P = 0.6) or IgG epitope repertoire development (P = 0

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever is an endemic disease that causes substantial morbidity and mortality in low and middle-income countries. A case-control study was conducted to understand the risk factors for typhoid fever.
METHODS: The study applied the case-control method to compare past exposure between participants who had typhoid fever (cases) and participants who did not have typhoid fever (controls) after obtaining ethical approval (No. 244/KEPK-TJK/III/2023). We identified and surveyed patients with typhoid fever confirmed by blood culture. Control subjects were randomly selected neighbors

OBJECTIVES: Older adults have a disproportionately higher COVID-19 risk; however, there is limited research investigating adherence to the major COVID-19 mitigation behaviors (handwashing, masking, social distancing) for older populations. We examined COVID-19 risk factors and predictors for adherence to COVID-19 mitigation behaviors among a national sample of US older adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Data were retrieved for 3257 respondents from a nationally representative prospective sample of US Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 years. COVID-19 variables were collected in 2020, whereas all other data w

Background: Past research suggests that knowledge supports- but strong illness expectations thwart- adoption of protective behaviors (e.g., handwashing). Strong illness expectations may place COVID-19 essential workers at risk. It is unclear, however, whether knowledge can moderate the negative effects of pessimistic illness expectations on protective behaviors. We test COVID-19 knowledge as a moderator of the effects of (1) pessimistic illness expectations and (2) essential worker status on adherence to protective behaviors. Methods: Participants (n = 350) completed measures of knowledge, ill

BACKGROUND: The risk of cholera outbreak remains high in Cameroon. This is because of the persistent cholera outbreaks in neighboring countries coupled with the poor hygiene and sanitation conditions in Cameroon. The objective of this study was to assess the readiness of health facilities to respond to cholera outbreak in four cholera-prone districts in Cameroon.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted targeting all health facilities in four health districts, labeled as cholera hotspots in Cameroon in August 2016. Data collection was done by interview with a questionnaire and by ob
