Increasing motorcycles attention and search conspicuity by using Alternating-Blinking Lights System (ABLS).

Poor conspicuity of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTW) is one of the main factors contributing to their involvement in accidents. The current study examined the influence of different rider's outfits on PTWs' detectability, and evaluated the potential of a unique Alternating-Blinking Lights System (ABLS) to increase the rider's conspicuity. This study included two experiments that examined the visual search involved in the process of scanning video clips of dynamic traffic scenes. The first experiment examined PTWs' attention conspicuity, while the second evaluated PTWs' search conspicuity. In the att

Changes in motorcycle-related head injury deaths, hospitalizations, and hospital charges following repeal of Pennsylvania's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

To evaluate the 2003 repeal of Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law, we assessed changes in helmet use and compared motorcycle-related head injuries with non-head injuries from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005. Helmet use among riders in crashes decreased from 82% to 58%. Head injury deaths increased 66%; nonhead injury deaths increased 25%. Motorcycle-related head injury hospitalizations increased 78% compared with 28% for nonhead injury hospitalizations. Helmet law repeals jeopardize motorcycle riders. Until repeals are reversed, states need voluntary strategies to increase helmet use.

An analysis of head injuries among skiers and snowboarders.

BACKGROUND: Head injury is the leading cause of death and critical injury in skiing and snowboarding accidents. METHODS: Data relating to head injuries occurring on the ski slopes were collected from the trauma registry of a Level I trauma center located near a number of ski resorts. RESULTS: From 1982 to 1998, 350 skiers and snowboarders with head injuries were admitted to our Level I trauma center. Most of the injuries were mild, with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores of 13 to 15 in 81% and simple concussion in 69%. However, 14% of patients had severe brain injuries, with GCS scores of 3 to

[A potential for prevention of bicycling-related head injuries].

BACKGROUND: Bicycle helmets prevent head injury in bicycle riders. Still, only a portion of bicycle riders in Norway use bicycle helmets. The aim of this study was to estimate the number of head injuries among bicycle riders that might be prevented by increased helmet use in Norway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian National Injury Register for the years 1995 and 1996 to estimate the number of bicycle injuries in Norway. In order to estimate the number of bicycle users and helmet users in different age groups, we used data from earlier surveys of bicycle use. Data on the e

Pedal cycling fatalities in northern Sweden.

The aim of the study was to elucidate the crash and injury mechanisms in bicycle fatalities in the northern half of Sweden. All available autopsy protocols, hospital records and police reports were scrutinized. In 11 years, 146 bicyclists were fatally injured. The majority of the victims were males (66%) and the median age was 60 years. Most of the crashes (81%) occurred from May through October, during weekdays (84%), and during daylight (86%). Almost all victims (88%) died in a motor vehicle collision, in 21% with a truck. None was wearing a helmet. Poor hearing and cerebral arterosclerosis

An epidemiological study of high school ice hockey injuries.

Between 1976 and 1983, 42 spinal cord injuries among ice hockey participants were documented in Canada; within a recent 3-week period, three cases involving fractured necks were reported in a metropolitan area of Minnesota. The purpose of this comprehensive epidemiological study was to document rates, types, and severities of injuries incurred among high school varsity hockey players in Minnesota, as a result of participation in the 1982-1983 season, and to determine the variables associated with these injuries. Within a 30-mile radius of the state's major metropolitan area, 12 high school var

"The grave yawns for the horseman." Equestrian deaths in South Australia 1973-1983.

The fatalities associated with the riding and handling of horses in South Australia over the 11-year period 1973-1983 are reviewed. There were 18 deaths, including two sudden natural deaths in the saddle and one drowning. The 15 cases of horse-related trauma represent a death rate of approximately one per million population per annum. Thirteen of the deaths were the result of a head injury after a fall. Nine persons were not wearing protective headgear. The two principal groups at risk were male professional riders with a mean age of 32 years and female amateurs with a mean age of 19 years.

Comparison of impact data in hockey, football, and soccer.

PURPOSE: To compare accelerational forces to the head in high school-level football, hockey, and soccer athletes. METHODS: Acceleration of impact was measured within the helmet of high school hockey and football players during actual game play. A triaxial accelerometer was placed at the vertex of the helmet immediately adjacent to the players head. Peak acceleration (in g's) was measured and the Gadd Severity Index and Head Injury Criterion score calculated during actual play periods in several games over four seasons. We also recorded acceleration of head impacts in high school-level soccer

Traffic collisions and micromobility: A comparison between personal mobility devices and bicycles based on police reports.

INTRODUCTION: The recent increase in the use of bicycles and personal mobility devices (PMDs), including mostly E-scooters, is associated with a rapid rise in injuries. Understanding the main crash scenarios leading to these injuries is essential to evaluate and improve preventive and protective measures, especially for PMDs, which are often equated with bicycles. The objective of this study is to identify and compare the most common two-party collision scenarios for bicycles and PMDs, and to identify factors affecting injury severity. METHOD: Crashes involving at least one PMD or one bicycle

Cranial molding helmet therapy and establishment of practical criteria for management in Asian infant positional head deformity.

BACKGROUND: The growing number of infants with deformational plagiocephaly (DP) has raised clinical questions about which children, at what age, and how molding helmet therapy (MHT) should be performed especially in Japan. METHODS: A total of 1,011 Japanese pediatric head deformity infants had undergone MHT after being diagnosed with non-synostotic DP. Three ratios of left to right comparison (anterior, posterior, and overall) were created and analyzed comparing age of starting treatment, helmet wearing period, and severity of skull deformity before with after MHT. RESULTS: The averages of h

Os parietale divisum.

Divisions of the parietal bone are extraordinarily rare, and have been described previously only in skull specimens in the anatomical literature. We report a case of os parietale divisum (divided parietal bone) in an infant with plagiocephaly. A 36-weeks gestation male with multiple congenital anomalies presented to the deformational plagiocephaly clinic at 11 weeks of age. CT imaging demonstrated a suture dividing the left parietal bone into two segments. He had a plagiocephalic appearance, with the greater occipital and parietal protuberances ipsilateral to the abnormal left parietal suture,

Structural and mechanical characterisation of bridging veins: A review.

Bridging veins drain the venous blood from the cerebral cortex into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and doing so they bridge the subdural space. Despite their importance in head impact biomechanics, little is known about their properties with respect to histology, morphology and mechanical behaviour. Knowledge of these characteristics is essential for creating a biofidelic finite element model to study the biomechanics of head impact, ultimately leading to the improved design of protective devices by setting up tolerance criteria. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-th

Early treatment of anterior calvarial craniosynostosis using endoscopic-assisted minimally invasive techniques.

BACKGROUND: A total of 100 patients who presented with synostosis of the metopic or coronal suture were consecutively treated during a 6-year period using minimally invasive endoscopic-assisted suturectomies. After surgery, all patients were fitted with custom-made cranial helmets for up to 12 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The coronal group consisted of 50 patients, 26 females and 23 males with a mean age of 3.78 months. Surgery was done through a single 2-mm incision at the ipsilateral stephanion. After endoscopic-assisted dissection, a craniectomy of the involved suture was done (mean widt

An improved motorcycle helmet design for tropical climates.

Approximately 20% of all fatal traffic crashes in India involve riders of motorized two-wheelers. Head protection of two-wheeler riders is therefore a very important issue. This paper reports the results of a survey of patterns of motorcycle helmet use in Delhi, and the design details of a more comfortable helmet. The survey results were used as guidelines for designing a safer helmet, with a better ventilating system, to promote wider use. In the new design additional protection is provided on the sides of the helmet, since our earlier studies showed that more head injuries occur on the side

The use of a stifle flexion device to manage avulsion of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle in a cat.

This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of a traumatic avulsion of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle in a three-and-a-half-year-old male neutered Domestic Shorthaired cat. Surgical repair was achieved using a modified three-loop pulley suture pattern passed through a suture anchor inserted at the point of origin of the tendon and around the fabella. A stifle flexion device was utilised during the postoperative period to protect the repair. Follow-up at five months showed a return to normal function. This is the first report of avulsion of the lateral head of the gastrocnem

Functional and histological assessment of 3D-printed helmet and hearing protection devices in preventing blast-induced auditory injury in Chinchillas.

Blast-induced auditory injury remains a persistent concern in many high-risk occupational environments, especially military service members and veterans. Although helmets and hearing protection devices (HPDs) have independently demonstrated efficacy in mitigating acoustic injuries, the synergistic protective effect of their combined use against blast overpressure (BOP) has not been comprehensively evaluated. The present study investigated the auditory protective performance of a custom-engineered 3D-printed helmet, both independently and in conjunction with HPDs, in a chinchilla model subjecte

Frontal sinus volume predicts incidence of brain contusion in patients with head trauma.

BACKGROUND: The function of the paranasal sinuses is a topic of debate. One hypothesis suggested has been that sinuses act as a "crumple zone," serving to protect the contents of the head from impact. In this study, we examine the interactions of the frontal sinus and the brain in the setting of head trauma. Our formal hypothesis is that frontal sinus volume is less in head trauma patients with contusion than in head trauma patients without contusion. METHODS: Computed tomographic (CT) scans of patients who sustained blunt head trauma performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center f

Photoprotective habits in children with systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease that can involve multiple organ systems. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can exacerbate pre-existing SLE, and can even induce systemic manifestations. This study aimed to investigate the photoprotective habits of children with SLE and the factors that significantly influence those photoprotective habits. METHODS: This questionnaire-based cross-sectional study included paediatric SLE patients being treated at the Department of Paediatrics at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, between September 2018 and Se
