[Newborn hearing screening].

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss is 1-3 per 1,000 newborns. Transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) and automated auditory brain stem responses (AABR) are most frequently used methods in newborn hearing screening programmes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine hearing function in newborns with and without risk factors for hearing loss. We investigated accuracy and feasibility of two automated technologies: transient otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and auditory brain stem response (AABR) in early detection of hearing loss. METHOD: In prospective study, 90

Increased Propofol Sensitivity Associated With Hearing Loss in Patients Undergoing Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Propofol is widely used in neurosurgery, with its dosage typically based on patient weight and variability. While factors like age, sex, and cognitive function are known to influence propofol requirements, the impact of preoperative hearing function remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between hearing loss and propofol sensitivity in vestibular schwannoma surgery patients. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 475 patients who underwent vestibular schwannoma resection between May 12, 2020, and February 28, 2024. Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) w

Hearing in patients in a department for long-term medicine. A further report.

Audiological screening was performed in 164 patients, aged 32-89 (median 71) years, in a department for long-term medical treatment. 45% of the patients had a hearing loss exceeding 30 dB HL in the frequency range 500-2 000 Hz (pure-tone average, PTA). The aetiology of the hearing loss was in most cases presbycusis, as the pure-tone thresholds were closely related to the age of the patients. The speech discrimination score for the better ear was impaired (less than 90%) in about 50% of the patients. Nevertheless, only 15% of the patients felt they had a significant hearing handicap. On average

"The sound of silence": when the brain doesn't hear.

Cognitive impairment is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and it affects about 6.5% of the population over the age of 65. Hearing impairment is a significant health problem and a possible cause for dementia. Preventing hearing loss or at least correcting it by the use of acoustic prosthesis may reduce the onset of dementia in old age. Indeed, hearing loss has been proposed as a risk factor for dementia, even if the mechanisms that correlate the two diseases are not yet fully understood. It can accelerate existing mild cognitive impairment by increasing the cognitive burden and/

NLRP3 inflammasome and hearing loss: from mechanisms to therapies.

The NLRP3 inflammasome, a key component of the innate immune system, has emerged as a central mediator of inflammation-driven sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). This review synthesizes current evidence on its involvement across a wide spectrum of auditory pathologies, including genetic syndromes such as CAPS and autosomal dominant deafness (DFNA) 34, as well as noise-induced, age-related, drug-induced, and viral hearing loss. Dysregulated activation of NLRP3 in the cochlea leads to the release of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1B and IL-18) and pyroptotic cell death, contributing to irreversibl

Haploinsufficiency of Whrn Contributes to Progressive Sensorineural Hearing Loss in C57BL6 Mice.

PURPOSE: Whrn, encoding whirlin, is one of the genes highly relevant to Usher syndrome (USH) that has been known as an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that is characterized with sensorineural hearing loss with retinitis pigmentosa. Although recent studies on the other USH genes, PDZD7 and Ush1 g, showed a possibility of haploinsufficiency effect, the potential contribution of heterozygous Whrn loss to hearing loss remains unclear. METHODS: To investigate the effect of Whrn haploinsufficiency, we conducted a longitudinal study assessing auditory function in heterozygous Whrn mutant (Whrn+

SOX10 mutations mimic isolated hearing loss.

Ninety genes have been identified to date that are involved in non-syndromic hearing loss, and more than 300 different forms of syndromic hearing impairment have been described. Mutations in SOX10, one of the genes contributing to syndromic hearing loss, induce a large range of phenotypes, including several subtypes of Waardenburg syndrome and Kallmann syndrome with deafness. In addition, rare mutations have been identified in patients with isolated signs of these diseases. We used the recent characterization of temporal bone imaging aspects in patients with SOX10 mutations to identify possibl

Natural history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

This is a prospective in-depth study of patients with sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss. We found that 65% recover completely to functional hearing levels spontaneously and independent of any type of medical treatment. The majority do so within 14 days and many within the first few days. Prognosis can be predicted according to the slope of the initial audiogram (low-frequency losses do better than high-frequency losses), hearing at 8 kHz, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, in some select instances spatial disorientation symptoms, and speech discrimination scores. There was a very poor

Cochlear protection against noise exposure requires serotonin type 3A receptor via the medial olivocochlear system.

The cochlear efferent feedback system plays important roles in auditory processing, including regulation of the dynamic range of hearing, and provides protection against acoustic trauma. These functions are performed through medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurons. However, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. The serotonin type 3A (5-HT3A) receptor is widely expressed throughout the nervous system, which suggests important roles in various neural functions. However, involvement of the 5-HT3A receptor in the MOC system remains unclear. We used mice in this stud

Effects of hearing loss and spectral shaping on identification and neural response patterns of stop-consonant stimuli.

In order to determine the effects of hearing loss and spectral shaping on a dynamic spectral speech cue, behavioral identification and neural response patterns of stop-consonant stimuli varying along the /b-d-g/ place-of-articulation continuum were measured from 11 young adults (mean age = 27 years) and 10 older adults (mean age = 55.2 years) with normal hearing, and compared to those from 10 older adults (mean age = 61.3 years) with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment. Psychometric functions and N1-P2 cortical evoked responses were obtained using consonant-vowel (CV) stimuli with frequency-in

Single and Dual Vector Gene Therapy with AAV9-PHP.B Rescues Hearing in Tmc1 Mutant Mice.

AAV-mediated gene therapy is a promising approach for treating genetic hearing loss. Replacement or editing of the Tmc1 gene, encoding hair cell mechanosensory ion channels, is effective for hearing restoration in mice with some limitations. Efficient rescue of outer hair cell function and lack of hearing recovery with later-stage treatment remain issues to be solved. Exogenous genes delivered with the adeno-associated virus (AAV)9-PHP.B capsid via the utricle transduce both inner and outer hair cells of the mouse cochlea with high efficacy. Here, we demonstrate that AAV9-PHP.B gene therapy ca

The Experience of Adult-Onset Hearing Loss and Adaptation to a Cochlear Implant.

BackgroundSpoken language and environmental sounds hold rich and nuanced meaning for the listener, but depend on accurate hearing of the soundscape, including the timing, volume, and contrasts of its component pitches. Sensorineural hearing loss with aging degrades these properties, leading to progressive disability.ObjectivesThis case study and review describe my experience and behavioral accommodations to progressive bilateral hearing loss, limited compensation with hearing aids, and the stuttering evolution of gains after a unilateral cochlear implant (CI).ResultsDespite increasingly powerf

Dual Sensory Impairment: Impact of Central Vision Loss and Hearing Loss on Visual and Auditory Localization.

PURPOSE: In the United States, AMD is a leading cause of low vision that leads to central vision loss and has a high co-occurrence with hearing loss. The impact of central vision loss on the daily functioning of older individuals cannot be fully addressed without considering their hearing status. We investigated the impact of combined central vision loss and hearing loss on spatial localization, an ability critical for social interactions and navigation. METHODS: Sixteen older adults with central vision loss primarily due to AMD, with or without co-occurring hearing loss, completed a spatial

[Categorizing hearing disorders based on latency deviations in the BERA (brainstem electric response audiometry)].

The dependence of latencies of EAEPs (Early Auditory Evoked Potentials) on stimulus intensity has been determined from measurements at 15 normal hearing subjects. The results are in good agreement with an exponential function, which has been empirically found and fitted to the data. The deviation from this function in case of hearing disorders can be classified in terms of a "latency deviation diagram". In the simplest case of a pure conductive hearing loss, the effect on latencies is a mere shift of all values to higher levels. The resultant latency deviation lines can be computed and the res

Chronic Toxoplasma gondii Infection Modulates Hearing Ability across the Adult Life Span.

While several studies have shown associations between hearing disorders and congenital toxoplasmosis, the present study investigated the impact of chronic, latent Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection on hearing loss. We used a regression analysis to explore whether latent T. gondii infection modulates changes in hearing thresholds over an age range from 20 to 70 years. We analyzed audiometric data of 162 T. gondii IgG-positive and 430 T. gondii-negative participants, collected in the Dortmund Vital Study (DVS, ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05155397), a prospective study on healthy cogni

Distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) in tinnitus patients.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of tinnitus (experiment I) and the combined effect of tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss (experiment II) on the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) for two age groups of tinnitus patients. Tinnitus patients with normal earing, along with normal-hearing control subjects, participated in experiment I. They were divided into two age groups, below 50 and above 50 years. Experiment I showed that the DPOAE levels in the tinnitus patients were lower than those in the normal-hearing (nontinnitus) subjects. The differences depended on t
