Seven hundred and ninety-six consecutive patients with operable primary breast cancer treated with doxorubicin-containing postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy between 1974 and 1982 were evaluated for assessment of the acute and long-term toxicities of the program. Most patients experienced nausea, vomiting, and alopecia, side effects that were totally reversible. Doxorubicin skin infiltration was observed in 6% of the patients. Hematologic toxicity was moderate, and only 26% of the patients had a granulocyte nadir of less than 1000 cells/ml. Febrile or infectious complications occurred in 6% of

Cardiac metastasis is rarely detected in oncology practice. Herein we present a rare case of metastatic gastric cancer that metastasized to the right atrium and presented with right heart failure. A 51-year-old male patient with no known chronic disease presented with fatigue, abdominal distension and leg edema for 3 weeks. Physical examination revealed abdominal ascites, tachycardia and pretibial edema. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a hypoechoic, less-mobile mass that almost completely filled the right atrium. Moreover, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomogr

Primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma is rare and its extension to the mitral valve even rarer. We report a case of left atrial rhabdomyosarcoma involving the mitral valve. The patient was a 62-year-old man who complained of recurrent pre-syncopal episodes, dyspnoea often sudden in onset, asthenia and major weight loss (10 kg in one month). 2-D echocardiography revealed a 4.9 cm2 wide mass attached to the atrial side of the anterior mitral leaflet and to the adjacent inferior interatrial septum, where it seemed to have origin. CT scan and scintigraphy revealed bone, kidney and spleen metastases. Th

Primary cardiac tumors are uncommon in pediatric patients. We report a two year-old boy, who presented a recurrent left atrial myxoma. He was referred for cardiologic evaluation because of cardiomegaly on a chest X-ray. An echocardiography showed a big left atrial tumor attached to the atrial septum. The tumor was uneventfully removed and the pathological examination confirmed a myxoma. He remained asymptomatic and during a follow up echocardiography two years later, a recurrent tumor was noted. He was successfully operated again, remaining free of a new recurrence after 3 years of follow up.

The Carney Complex is a very rare autosomal dominant disease including multiple neoplasia syndrome. This syndrome was initially described in 1985 under the rubric "...the complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity". We present a case report of an old woman with Carney Complex who had the characteristic features of facial hirsutism and acromegalic facies, a large pigmented swelling over the face and a cardiac myxoma arising from the left atrium. We emphasize the need for periodic echocardiographic screening of patients and family members.

Primary cardiac tumor in infancy is an uncommon condition which is rarely accompanied with congenital heart disease. Although these tumors are generally benign, the complication associated with it, such as arrhythmia, outflow tract obstruction, and heart failure, may result in early mortality, when combined with congenital heart disease. Early surgical treatment may reduce complication risk and increase operative success rate which may improve the patient's long-term prognosis. Herein, we report a case of an eight-month-old Chinese baby boy diagnosed with a calcified fibroma combined with vent

Cardiac myxoma is the most frequent primary tumor of the heart. However, it is rarely associated with congenital cardiac anomalies such as atrial septal defect in the literature. We present a 72-year-old woman referred to the emergency department with loss of consciousness and finally diagnosed as a pedinculated mobile left atrial myxoma and concomitant occurrence of an ostium secundum type atrial septal defect. The mass was successfully excised, and atrial septal defect was safely repaired by primary suture. The patient is currently well after surgery. Atrial myxoma should be considered in th

A rare case of left atrial myxoma associated with ruptured chordae tendineae is presented. The patient was 70-year-old woman, and was diagnosed to have a left atrial myxoma. The myxoma was extirpated together with the atrial septum from which tumor developed. After removal of the myxoma, a ruptured strut chordae tendineae of anterior leaflet was also detected and resutured to the original papillary muscle. The cause of the torn chordae is presumed to be so-called "wrecking ball effect", and to be myxomatous degeneration of the valve.

We report the case of a 63-year-old woman presenting with progressive dyspnea of insidious onset culminating in severe central cyanosis. Conventional studies including M-mode echocardiography did not point to the diagnosis. At cardiac catheterization a large right atrial myxoma producing partial dynamic tricuspid obstruction was discovered along with an atrial septal defect with a right to left shunt. After successful surgical excision of the tumor and repair of the atrial septal defect, the patient has been totally relieved of her presenting symptoms.

A 75-year-old man was admitted for cerebral infarction. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed parietal lobe cerebral infarction. Transesophageal echo and contrast-enhanced computed tomography indicated mobile and speckled mass arising from left atrium. He was diagnosed with cardiogenic cerebral embolism. Under cardiopulmonary bypass, resection of the mass including endocardium tissue was per formed. The resected specimen showed multiple small fronds resembling a sea anemone. Microscopic examination showed multiple branching fronds of paucicellular and avascular fibroelastic tissue lined by a sin

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas (CPF) are benign tumors, frequently asymptomatic, characterized by a mobile pedunculated mass that arises from the endocardium. When CPF is located in the left ventricle, it may protrude into the left ventricular outflow tract and affect hemodynamics. They are highly thrombogenic, and can also cause some life-threatening events such as cerebral and peripheral embolization.
CASE REPORT: We herein report a case of a 74-year-old female admitted to our center with palpitations and dyspnea on exertion. Her past medical history revealed that she had

Cardiac myxoma is the most common benign cardiac tumor. Brain metastases or multiple cerebral aneurysms are extremely rare, especially for the case of both complications. Brain metastases are usually found at the same time or few months after the diagnosis or surgical removal of cardiac myxoma CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of patient, operated for a cardiac myxoma, who presented multiple central nervous system metastases associated, cerebral aneurysms and subsequent intracerebral hemorrhage CONCLUSIONS: The long-term follow-up of the patients with atrial myxoma even after complete surg

We report a unique case of carcinoid cardiopathy. The patient, a 59-year-old white woman with a known carcinoid tumor of the terminal ileum, presented with complete heart block and subsequently died. Because of her clinical presentation, we examined the conducting system at autopsy. The atrioventricular node was heavily infiltrated by metastatic carcinoid. The tumor was also seen in the surrounding atrial myocardium. No other metastatic lesions were seen in the heart. Carcinoid cardiopathy in the form of right-sided endocardial and valvular thickening has been well documented in the literature

At the age of three months an infant rapidly developed signs of cardiac failure as well as in- and exspiratory stridor, caused by an intrathoracic tumor. Thoracotomy and biopsy revealed an intrapericardial tumor, histologically myxosarcoma. In spite of chemotherapy and radiation the infant died at the age of seven months due to multiple intracerebral metastases now histologically rhabdomyosarcoma. This is one of the rare cases of primarily malignant intrapericardial tumors in infancy, and also shows the possible pleomorphism of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma. We know only one further case of peric

We report the case of a 70-year-old woman with rheumatic mitral stenosis and a transient ischaemic attack. Transoesophageal echocardiography revealed a cystic mass in the right atrium, hanging to the interatrial septum by a pedicle, not circulating. The mass was heterogeneous and suggested a tumour (myxoma) or a thrombus. Surgical resection showed it was an interatrial septal aneurysm, closed on itself, filled with blood. The usual causes of cardiac tumours and pathogeny of large interatrial aneurysms are discussed.
