OBJECTIVE: We previously showed that in asphyxiated fetal lambs the duration of hypotension correlated well with the severity of histologic damage to the brain, whereas the duration of bradycardia did not. OBJECTIVE: Gram-negative septic shock is associated with severe hypotension and autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction. We hypothesized that in an anesthetized rabbit model of endotoxin shock, autonomic modulation of cardiac activity, as measured by power spectral analysis of heart rate (HR) variability, would be decreased compared with the anesthetized control rabbits.

Infants of diabetic mothers are considered to be at increased risk of fetal distress. We suggest that umbilical vasculitis is strongly associated with abnormal fetal rate patterns, which indicate fetal tissue hypoxia even in the absence of clinical evidence of intrapartum infection. Heart rate response to submaximal graded treadmill exercise was measured in 45 patients with vasospastic angina, 31 with effort angina, and 40 normal controls.
