Analysis of Congenital Heart Defects in Mouse Embryos Using Qualitative and Quantitative Histological Methods.

Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most common type of birth defect in humans, affecting up to 1% of all live births. However, the underlying causes for CHD are still poorly understood. The developing mouse constitutes a valuable model for the study of CHD, because cardiac developmental programs between mice and humans are highly conserved. The protocol describes in detail how to produce mouse embryos of the desired gestational stage, methods to isolate and preserve the heart for downstream processing, quantitative methods to identify common types of CHD by histology (e.g., ventricular sep

Incomplete atrioventricular septal defect with hypoplastic left ventricle and left atrioventricular valve stenosis.

A 2-month-old male infant with incomplete atrioventricular septal defect associated with a hypoplastic left ventricle and left atrioventricular valve stenosis successfully underwent biventricular repair. Echocardiography showed marked dilatation in the right ventricle and a diminutive left ventricle. However, the left ventricular chamber occupied the apex. Left atrioventricular valve stenosis was due to a solitary papillary muscle. Cardiac catheterization showed pulmonary/systemic flow ratio of 3.61, left ventricular end-diastolic volume of 63% of normal, and right ventricular end-diastolic vo

[Sudden onset of systemic hypoxia associated with both tricuspid regurgitation and persistent foramen ovale: a case report].

A 33-year-old female who had undergone closure of VSD 20 years before, was hospitalized for sudden onset of dyspnea without history of febrile or traumatic disorder. On admission, she had cyanotic lips and nailbeds but no clubbed finger. Chest x-ray film showed neither lung congestion nor cardiomegaly. Arterial blood gas analysis revealed deep hypoxia (PaO2 = 49.6 mmHg). Echocardiogram clarified massive tricuspid regurgitation (TR) due to chordal rupture of anterior leaflet, small VSD jet stream through the membranous aneurysm and a great deal of R-L shunt on the atrial level through a persist

A case of rare pulmonary sequestration complicated with congenital heart disease treated by arterial embolization and atrial defect closure: A case report and review of literature.

Pulmonary sequestration with congenital heart disease is a rare congenital malformation. Herein, we report a 19-month-old toddler diagnosed with right lower pulmonary sequestration, right pulmonary artery dysplasia, right lower pulmonary venous ectopic drainage, and a right-sided heart with an atrial septal defect. The pulmonary sequestration had a rare blood supply, such as confluent arteries with the renal vessels draining into the hepatic veins. Arterial embolization and atrial defect closure were used to treat the rare congenital malformation with satisfactory results.

A Comprehensive In Silico Analysis on the Structural and Functional Impact of SNPs in the Congenital Heart Defects Associated with NKX2-5 Gene-A Molecular Dynamic Simulation Approach.

Congenital heart defects (CHD) presented as structural defects in the heart and blood vessels during birth contribute an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Many Single nucletotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in different genes have been associated with various types of congenital heart defects. NKX 2-5 gene is one among them, which encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor that plays a crucial role during the initial phases of heart formation and development. Mutations in this gene could cause different types of congenital heart defects, including Atrial septal d

Percutaneous Zero-fluoroscopy Atrial Septal Defect Closure Versus Fluoroscopy-guided Method: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous atrial septal defects (ASD) closure with fluoroscopy guidance is the standard procedure. However, fluoroscopy poses stochastic and deterministic risks for small infants and children. Zero fluoroscopy ASD closure is an alternative, yet its feasibility and safety compared to fluoroscopy remain unclear. Therefore, this study compares outcomes using standardized fluoroscopy and zero fluoroscopy methods for transcatheter ASD closure. METHODS: Four databases (PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar, Wiley) were used to search literature published before July 2023. The main resul

Update on heart failure, heart transplant, congenital heart disease, and clinical cardiology.

In the year 2012, 3 scientific sections-heart failure and transplant, congenital heart disease, and clinical cardiology-are presented together in the same article. The most relevant development in the area of heart failure and transplantation is the 2012 publication of the European guidelines for heart failure. These describe new possibilities for some drugs (eplerenone and ivabradine); expand the criteria for resynchronization, ventricular assist, and peritoneal dialysis; and cover possibilities of percutaneous repair of the mitral valve (MitraClip(®)). The survival of children with hypoplast

[Exercise hypertension in children after surgical repair of treated ventricular and atrial septal defects].

The blood pressure profile during exercise of children who have undergone surgery for left-to-right intracardiac shunt is not well documented. The aim of this study was to measure the peak blood pressure during dynamic exercise stress testing in children operated on for atrial or ventricular septal defects and to compare the results with those of normal children and children operated on for tetralogy of Fallot. Forty eight cases of atrial septal defect, 53 cases of ventricular septal defect and 33 cases of tetralogy of Fallot aged 5 to 14 years underwent maximal exercise stress testing on a tr

[Surgery for atrial septal defect in patients over 40 years of age (author's transl)].

Between 1961 and 1972, 354 patients with atrial septal defect ware treated surgically. Of these 80 patients were aged over 40 years at the time of operation. The hospital mortality was 5%. 2 of these patients had a increased preoperative pulmonary artery systolic pressure (50-75 mmHg), the other 2 had a mitral or tricuspid incompetence. At late follow-up 82% of patients were symptomfree, 18% had slight clinical signs of breathlesness on exertion. The heart size decreased in 37 of 40 patients, the electrocardiographis signs of right ventricular hypertrophy in 23 patients. There was no influence

Syndrome of valvular pulmonary stenosis and valvular aortic stenosis with atrial septal defect.

Clinical and morphological findings are described in 2 adults with combined valvular pulmonary and aortic stenosis with atrial septal defect, an extremely rare combination of lesions. The direction of the shunt via the atrial septal defect in this combination appears to be dependent on the relative degree of outflow obstruction on the right side compared with the left side of the heart. In 1 patient the degree of obstruction at the pulmonary valve was nearly three times that at the aortic valve and, therefore, the shunt was right to left and the patient was severely cyanotic. In the other pati

Left Ventricular Noncompaction Is More Prevalent in Ventricular Septal Defect Than Other Congenital Heart Defects: A Morphological Study.

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a condition characterized by prominent ventricular trabeculae and deep intertrabecular recesses and has been described as a possible substrate for arrhythmias, thromboembolism, and heart failure. Herein, we explored the prevalence of LVNC morphology among hearts with congenital heart defects (CHD). We examined 259 postnatal hearts with one of the following CHD: isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD); isolated atrial septal defect (ASD); atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD); transposition of the great arteries (TGA); isomerism of the atrial appendages
