Correlation of Blood Glucose Levels with Profiles Hematology on Patient Diabetes Mellitus with Ulcer Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that often leads to diabetic ulcers and persistent hyperglycemia. This condition can cause vascular and metabolic abnormalities, affecting bone marrow performance and altering the hematological profile of patients. This study investigates the correlation between blood glucose levels and hematological profiles in DM patients with diabetic ulcers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quantitative, experimental laboratory study was conducted with 30 blood samples from DM patients at Ulin Hospital Banjarmasin, Indonesia, in February 2023, using purpo

Organoids as a new approach in advancing cancer therapies for hematologic malignancies.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Among these, hematologic malignancies originating in the bone marrow present unique challenges for in vivo modeling due to their complex pathophysiology and dynamic microenvironment. Over the years, numerous approaches have been developed better to understand cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic resistance. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) organoid culture has accelerated progress in molecular and cellular oncology by providing physiologically relevant models that recapitulate key aspects of human tissues. Derived

Nutritional status of nursing home patients.

Nutritional surveys were conducted on all 115 patients of a Medicare-approved nursing home. The techniques of nutritional assessment used included anthropometric measurements (weight/height, triceps skinfold, arm-muscle and arm circumference), biochemical and hematologic tests (serum albumin, serum transferrin, total lymphocyte count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit), and an intradermal skin test for cell mediated immunity. The prevalence of protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) of moderate to severe degree was very high by currently used standards (weight/height, 43%; triceps skinfold, 37%; arm-muscl…

Hematological parameters as predictive indicators of disease stage in patients with cervical cancer.

Hematological abnormalities are highly common in cervical cancer and may serve as key indicators of disease progression. This study evaluates the predictive value of routine hematological parameters in identifying the stage of cervical cancer. This comparative cross-sectional study enrolled 200 women with cervical cancer, categorized into early and advanced clinical stages groups (100 per group). A consecutive sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Three milliliters of venous blood were collected from each participant for hematological analysis. Data analysis was per

Central diabetes insipidus due to acute monocytic leukemia: case report and review of the literature.

We describe a 69-year-old man who presented with a four-month history of polyuria and polydipsia. Plasma vasopressin levels were undetectable, and a dehydration test was abnormal. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of central diabetes insipidus has been established. Hematologic studies showed acute monocytic leukemia. A relationship between the hematologic and endocrine disturbance has been hypothesized, and histological examination at autopsy showed leukemic infiltration of the pituitary stalk. This patient represents the third case in the world literature of central diabetes insipidus asso

Evaluation of the nutritional status of patients over 60-year admitted in a hematology department using the mininutritional assessment (MNA). A single centre study of 120 cases.

BACKGROUND: The nutritional status of older persons suffering from various medical or surgical conditions has been well reported. However, studies focusing on hematology patients are very rare. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to obtain a photographic picture of the nutritional profile of a sample population treated for miscellaneous blood disorders, to compare our results with those obtained in other types of diseases and to isolate risk-factors for undernutrition. DESIGN: One hundred-twenty free living hematology patients aged over 60-year were prospectively and randomly tested the day of their admi

Novel influenza a (H1N1) infection in a Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic during the 2009-2010 pandemia.

Pandemic influenza A infection (2009 H1N1) was associated with a worldwide outbreak of febrile respiratory infection. Although usually it results in a mild illness, certain patient groups are at increased risk for complications. The authors reviewed their experience in a pediatric hematology-oncology unit to determine the outcome of this disease in children with hematological conditions and solid tumors. During the second outbreak (1 November 2009 to 14 January 2010), a total of 187 children from pediatric clinic were tested for H1N1 influenza A by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), 63

Adaptive hematological profiles and brain structure buffer depression in high-altitude healthy adults.

The chronic hypoxic environment at high altitude promotes compensatory changes in the hematological system and may influence depression. However, it remains unclear how hematological compensation affects depression through brain structural mechanisms. In this study, we performed structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 129 healthy adult participants who had resided at high altitude for an extended period, and collected their routine blood test data along with depression subscale scores from the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). Cluster analysis based on red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobi

Comparative study of complete versus incomplete Kawasaki disease in 59 pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical and laboratory features and the rate of echocardiographic coronary artery abnormalities in patients with complete and incomplete forms of Kawasaki disease (KD) and to determine which additional clinical criteria might support a suspicion of KD. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with KD who were admitted to the general pediatrics department of the Kremlin Bicêtre Teaching Hospital, France, between January 1995 and May 2006. We compared patients with a fever and four or five of the principal criteria (complete KD) to the oth

Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.

Because there are no reliable biological or laboratory markers associated with the condition, the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is based on patient descriptions of common symptoms such as abdominal pain accompanied by changes in stool form or frequency and associated symptoms such as bloating and distension. With the development and refinement of symptom-based criteria for the diagnosis of IBS, the traditional need for a negative diagnostic evaluation has been questioned. This article evaluates the diagnostic characteristics of various symptom-based criteria in routine clinical pr

Prognostic value of blood lactate, blood glucose, and hematocrit in canine babesiosis.

Canine babesiosis typically causes hemolytic anemia but also can result in multiple organ dysfunction. Human patients with severe disease often have persistent hyperlactatemia, and blood lactate concentration is correlated with survival rate. In dogs, blood lactate concentration has been shown to be of prognostic value in patients with gastric dilatation-volvulus and in dogs admitted to intensive care units. Serial blood lactate and glucose concentrations and hematocrit on admission were determined in 90 dogs with naturally occurring, severe or complicated canine babesiosis. Forty-five dogs (5

Complement-Mediated Thrombotic Microangiopathy after Kidney Transplant: Should Treatment with C5 Inhibitor Be Lifelong?

Complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (CM-TMA) is a rare and life-threatening complication that can occur in kidney transplant recipients, with various potential triggers including immunosuppressive medications. The optimal management and duration of treatment with C5 inhibitors (C5i) for CM-TMA in this patient population remain areas of ongoing investigation. We present the case of a 38-year-old female with a history of IgA nephropathy who underwent preemptive living-related kidney transplantation and subsequently developed CM-TMA 7 years post-transplant. Treatment with ravulizumab l

Approach to the patient with secondary osteoporosis.

Secondary osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass with microarchitectural alterations in bone leading to fragility fractures in the presence of an underlying disease or medication. Scenarios that are highly suspicious for secondary osteoporosis include fragility fractures in younger men or premenopausal women, very low bone mineral density (BMD) values, and fractures despite anti-osteoporotic therapy. An open-minded approach with a detailed history and physical examination combined with first-line laboratory tests are aimed at identifying clinical risk factors for fractures, osteoporosi

Clinical validation of the Hilab lens for AI supported point of care CBC testing in pediatric oncology.

BACKGROUND: Complete blood count (CBC) testing is critical for diagnosing and monitoring hematological conditions, including leukemia. However, conventional analyzers require specialized infrastructure and trained personnel, limiting access in resource-constrained settings. Point-of-care hematology devices provide a promising alternative by delivering rapid results with minimal complexity. This study aimed to evaluate the analytical performance of the Hilab Lens versus XE-2100. METHODS: Blood samples (n = 555) were analyzed using both devices at Erastinho Hospital, a pediatric oncology center

Performance of MycAssay Aspergillus DNA real-time PCR assay compared with the galactomannan detection assay for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis from serum samples.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a major problem in the immunocompromised population, and its diagnosis is difficult due to the low sensitivity of available tests. Detection of Aspergillus nucleic acid by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in serum samples is a promising diagnostic tool; however, use of multiple "in-house" methods precludes standardization. The first commercial PCR assay, MycAssay Aspergillus (Myconostica, Ltd), became available recently, and its performance in the diagnosis of IA was evaluated and compared with the galactomannan (GM) assay. Serum samples obtained from patients wit
