The effect of arm swings on lower limb kinetics during single-leg forward, vertical, and backward hopping.

Single-leg forward hopping was commonly used to evaluate knee function and quadricep strength deficits following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Achieving similar hopping performance between legs was insufficient to support symmetrical knee function and quadricep strength in patients following ACL injuries, likely due to movement compensation. This study aimed to quantify the effects of arm swings on lower limb kinetics during single-leg forward, vertical, and backward hopping with a focus on knee assessment. Thirty-eight injury-free participants performed single-leg forward, vertic

Dynamic Responses of Intact Post Mortem Human Surrogates from Inferior-to-Superior Loading at the Pelvis.

During certain events such as underbody blasts due to improvised explosive devices, occupants in military vehicles are exposed to inferior-to-superior loading from the pelvis. Injuries to the pelvis-sacrum-lumbar spine complex have been reported from these events. The mechanism of load transmission and potential variables defining the migration of injuries between pelvis and or spinal structures are not defined. This study applied inferior-to-superior impacts to the tuberosities of the ischium of supine-positioned five post mortem human subjects (PMHS) using different acceleration profiles, de

Groin pain: clinical assessment and the role of MR imaging.

Groin pain is a common problem in the elite athlete and may lead to prolonged inactivity if inadequately treated. Groin pain, arising from injuries to the hip and pelvis, accounts for 5 to 6% of athletic injuries in adults and 10 to 24% of these injuries in children. Lower limb-dominated athletic activities such as football, rugby, ice hockey, running, and ballet are particularly at risk. Comprehensive evaluation of all the anatomical locations prone to injury including the hip joint, sacrum, ilium and proximal femora, pelvic tendon attachments, and pelvic musculature is required. Diagnosis, preoperative evaluation, classification and total hip arthroplasty in patients with long-term unreduced hip joint dislocation, secondary osteoarthritis and pseudoarthrosis.

BACKGROUND: Neglected long-term unreduced hip joint dislocation with secondary osteoarthritis and pseudoarthrosis poses a great challenge to hip surgeons. However, as this is an uncommon injury, few studies have systematically investigated these patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients from 2010 to 2017. The diagnostic values of three different types of common radiological examinations were evaluated. We evaluated the bone conditions of the original acetabulum and classified the patients into three types (four subtypes). The surgical procedures and prognosis of the patients

Pediatric Sports Injuries.

Pediatric sports injuries are becoming more prevalent as children participate in sports. This has resulted in more imaging of pediatric injuries. The growing skeleton has features that result in unique injury patterns and radiologic findings. The article discusses the special features of bones including the growth plate, apophyses, cortex, and periosteum. Pediatric-specific sports injuries and conditions in the most common joints are then reviewed including the elbow, hip, and knee. The imaging appearances of these entities will be described with a multimodality approach including radiographs,

Diagnosis of occult fractures and dislocations.

The principles to be followed in the identification of occult injuries include: a good history and physical examination to arouse a high index of suspicion; high quality radiographs; radiographs of the whole bone and associated joints above and below, particularly in the lower cervical spine and hip; special views to delineate fractures, particularly oblique films, tangenital and axial views and stress films. Tomograms may also be helpful; follow-up and re-check films, especially with fractures and epiphyseal injuries. With early identification of fractures that are commonly missed, these inju

Rehabilitation exercises for common sports injuries.

Residual weakness after joint injury is a risk factor for recurrent injury. A rehabilitation program helps patients recover strength and helps prevent further injuries. Orthopedic injuries account for 10 percent of visits to family physicians, yet many primary care physicians do not routinely prescribe rehabilitation exercises for injured patients. Illustrations of exercises for the hip, knee, ankle and shoulder are included as a reference for family physicians to use when prescribing rehabilitation exercises.

Hip Capsulolabral Complex: Anatomy, Disease, MRI Features, and Postoperative Appearance.

The hip is a uniquely constrained joint with critical static stability provided by the labrum, capsule and capsular ligaments, and ligamentum teres. The labrum is a fibrocartilaginous structure along the acetabular rim that encircles most of the femoral head. Labral tears are localized based on the clock-face method, which determines the extent of the tear while providing consistent terminology for reporting. Normal labral variants can mimic labral disease and can be differentiated by assessment of thickness or width, shape, borders, location, and associated abnormalities. The Lage and Czerny

Relationship between the strength of the hip and knee stabilizer muscles and the Y balance test performance in adolescent volleyball athletes.

BACKGROUND: Due to the large number of jumping and landing movements, volleyball exerts a high demand on lower limbs, causing a high incidence of injuries. On average, 52% of volleyball injuries occur in lower limbs. Y Balance-test (YBT) is widely used to predict lower limb injury in athletes who jump, so it is important to identify whether the hip and knee stabilizer muscle strength is related to the performance of this test, since muscle strength is important for injury prevention, given the possibility of modifying these factors. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to correlate the st

Spinal cord injures in children observed over many years.

The known salient features of spinal cord injuries in children are that 1) plane X-rays may not show dislocations or fractures, 2) many of these injuries are complete transections, 3) many injuries are located at the level of upper thoracic spine, and 4) the duration of spinal shock is short. Complications such as pressure sores occur just as easily in children as in adults and the injuries tend to be just as intractable. Complications characteristic in children with spinal cord injuries are spinal deformity and hip dislocation. In this paper, we describe a case involving a C7 spinal cord inju

Are we blind to injuries in the visually impaired? A review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature on the risks and types of injuries associated with visual impairment, and to identify pertinent areas for future research. METHODS: A search of bibliographic databases was conducted in April 2000 for studies published since 1980 and selected studies that met two or more of the following criteria: formal ophthalmic assessment was used; adjustment for confounding variables; large sample size including numbers of visually impaired; and clear definitions and outcomes. RESULTS: Thirty one studies were selected. The majority of these studies (20) assessed falls

Vascular complications associated with orthopedic procedures.

Damage to vascular structures during orthopedic procedures occurs relatively infrequently; when it does occur, however, recognition and prompt intervention are essential. We report herein 11 vascular injuries secondary to orthopedic procedures encountered between 1978 and 1988. Two injuries occurred as a consequence of lumbar laminectomy, three as a result of total hip replacement, three secondary to open reduction and internal fixation of a fracture of a lower extremity, two secondary to attempted closed reduction of humeral fractures and one injury as a result of hip flexion contracture rele

Cambridge Protocol for Management of Segmental Bone Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign non-neoplastic condition in which heterotopic bone formation occurs in soft tissues. Neurogenic MO is one variant of MO where the lesion is a result of neurological disorders, including brain and spinal cord injuries, especially when followed by immobility and spasticity. MO can also be a result of direct trauma or even genetic mutations. CASE REPORT: We present three cases of young men (16, 37, and 22-year-old) who developed MO of the hip joint following brain or spinal cord injuries. One of them had also sustained a direct trauma to the aff

The fertility of men with spinal injuries.

Application of a vibrator of 80 Hz and 2.5 mm amplitude to the lower surface of the glans penis caused ejaculation in less than 20 minutes (usually less than 3 minutes) in 48 of 81 men with spinal cord injuries (mostly complete) of more than 6 months duration. It failed in all the 19 of the 81 who lacked reflex hip flexion on scratching the soles of the feet, and in 14 others. It failed in 11 of 12 men with injuries of less than 6 months' duration. From 21 of 34 men for whom the vibrator failed, semen could be obtained by electroejaculation, which is just as successful within 6 months of injur

Gas bubbles in the hip joint on CT: an indication of recent dislocation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if gas bubbles in the hip joint seen on CT scans after trauma are reliable indicators of recent (< 48 hr) hip dislocation. We believe that the gas seen in the hip joint represents intracapsular nitrogen bubbles that result from the vacuum created by forcible distraction associated with traumatic dislocation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT scans of 79 consecutive patients with pelvic injury were reviewed retrospectively. We noted the number and position of intracapsular gas bubbles, presence of joint effusion, soft-tissue injury, and associated

Isolated superior gluteal nerve injury: two case reports.

Isolated superior gluteal nerve injury has been infrequently described in the literature, mainly from injections or hip surgery. Its course through the greater sciatic foramen renders it at risk in pelvic or hip trauma. We report 2 cases of electromyographically documented isolated superior gluteal nerve injury following pelvic trauma. These cases illustrate that weakness in hip abduction following pelvic trauma may indicate the presence of a superior gluteal nerve injury, warranting further clinical and electrodiagnostic evaluation.

[Current role of ultrasonography in orthopedics. Results of a nationwide survey].

The purpose of this study was to determine the current position of diagnostic ultrasound imaging in the day to day orthopaedic practice. A questionnaire was sent to all the 387 conservative and operative orthopaedic hospitals and orthopaedic university departments in Germany. 167 of these hospitals completed the forms and provided the basis for this evaluation (response rate 43.2%). Screening of the fetal hip for CDH was by far the most common indication, the shoulder was ranking second, the knee and the hip joint in children and adults rank third and fourth. Other frequent indications were in
