A reliable method of creating chronic elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) in rodents is an important tool in reproducing and studying the mechanisms of optic nerve injury that occur in glaucoma. BACKGROUND: Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to direct stimuli, such as methacholine (MCh), is observed not only in asthma but other diseases. AHR to indirect stimuli is suggested to be more specific for asthma. The purpose of this study was to determine whether asthmatic airway inflammation is more closely related to AHR to hypertonic saline (HS), an indirect stimulus, than to MCh.
METHODS: Sixty-four consecutive adult patients with suspected asthma (45 asthma and 19 non-asthma) performed a combined bronchial challenge and sputum induction with 4.5% saline, and MCh challenge on the next day.

The onset of hematochezia with the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate enemas in an index case prompted us to review our experience with the use of such enemas in neonates. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate enemas were used in 20 of 2317 patients. Of these 20 patients, four (20%) had evidence of hematochezia temporally related to the use of the enemas. The purpose of the present study was to examine the protective action of a 7.5% hypertonic NaCl solution (HS) on the circulatory shock produced by compound 48/80 (48/80) in rats and to determine the effect of the AV3V lesion on the protective action of HS.
