Expanding the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum in a diverse cohort of 104 individuals with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome.

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by monoallelic variants in KMT2A and characterized by intellectual disability and hypertrichosis. We performed a retrospective, multicenter, observational study of 104 individuals with WSS from five continents to characterize the clinical and molecular spectrum of WSS in diverse populations, to identify physical features that may be more prevalent in White versus Black Indigenous People of Color individuals, to delineate genotype-phenotype correlations, to define developmental milestones, to describe the syndrome through…

Hypertrichotic patches as a mosaic manifestation of Proteus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is an overgrowth disorder caused by a mosaic activating AKT1 variant. Hair abnormalities in Proteus syndrome ha … color of hair on the body and scalp. RESULTS: Of 45 individuals evaluated, 29 (64%) had asymmetric hypertrichosis on the body. This included unilateral blaschkoid hypertrichotic patches overlying normal skin or epidermal nevi in 16 (36%), unilateral nonblaschkoid hypertrichotic patches in 11 (24%), and unilateral limb hypertrichosis in 10 (22%). Diffuse, scatte …

Modeling Clinical States and Metabolic Rhythms in Bioarcheology.

Bioarcheology is cross disciplinary research encompassing the study of human remains. However, life's activities have, up till now, eluded b … man's scalp yielding 504 data points. Hair growth was, ten times faster than normal consistent with hypertrichosis. Cantú syndrome consists of hypertrichosis, dyschondrosteosis, short stature, and cardiomegaly. Sympathetic activation and enhanced metabolic state suggesting arousal was also present. Two-photon microscopy visualized preserved portions of autonomic …

Cutaneous manifestations in patients with POEMS syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes syndrome is a rare multisystem paraneoplas … nized cutaneous manifestation. Hyperpigmentation and hemangioma were most common (47%), followed by hypertrichosis (38%). Vascular skin changes--acrocyanosis (34%), Raynaud phenomenon (20%), hyperemia/erythema (20%), flushing (16%), or rubor (11%)--occurred in 62%; white nails, sclerodermoid changes, and clubbing occurred in 30%, 26%, and 6%, respectively. Drug-induced hair loss and hair growth. Incidence, management and avoidance.

A large number of drugs may interfere with the hair cycle and produce hair loss. Drugs may affect anagen follicles through 2 main different … ages while other drugs are only occasionally responsible for hair abnormalities. Both hirsutism and hypertrichosis may be associated with drug administration. Drugs most commonly responsible for the development of hirsutism include testosterone, danazol, corticotrophin (ACTH), metyrapone, anabolic steroids and glucocorticoids. Hypertrichosis is a common adverse …

A case of dup(3q) syndrome.

Duplication of 3q is an extremely rare disorder characterized by "intellectual disability, deficiency of growth, broad nasal root and hypertrichosis". Although it is generally accepted that the duplication of the 3q25-qter region corresponds with a characteristic face, there is a debate about the critical region. In this report, we present a case with dup(3q) syndrome with 46,XY,der(7)ins(7;3)(p13; q22.1q26.31) karyotype and discuss the clinical findings.

Barber-Say syndrome in a father and daughter.

We report on a father to daughter transmission of Barber-Say syndrome (BSS), a rare, congenital disorder characterized by severe generalized hypertrichosis, macrostomia, ocular telecanthus, bulbous nose and atrophic skin. These two cases further support the autosomal dominant inheritance. Both presented with the typical BSS symptoms but the phenotypic expression in the father was milder. Treatment is challenging for both patients and doctors, requiring a multidisciplinary approach.

[Tooth and oral mucosa hereditary anomalies in complex syndromes characterized by hyper- or hypotrichosis].

A wide range of hereditary anomalies, characterized by hair defects and only partially known from the genetics point of view, involves the teeth and oral mucosa with particular features. Teeth alterations are extremely heterogeneous; very frequently gums, palate, tongue and lips are affected. Waiting for a more comprehensive genetic definition and classification, these anomalies are grouped according to the hair defect (hypotrichosis, hypertrichosis and mixed-type).

A cut above the rest: Trimming as a painless depilatory.

Shaving and other modes of epilation can cause undue anxiety, pain, or skin irritation in children. Here, we present hair trimming as a safe, painless, and cost-effective alternative for patients with unwanted hair which may be performed indefinitely or until the child is old enough to direct management. In select cases, removing unwanted hair using this technique may facilitate dermatologic surveillance.
