BACKGROUND: Approximately 40% of people with hypertension have left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) detected by ECG or echocardiography. Because patients with LVH have poor myocardial microcirculation, they may be too sensitive to lowering systolic blood pressure (SBP) too much due to a lack of myocardial perfusion pressure. We aimed to investigate whether the average achieved SBP <130 mm Hg may cause harm in patients with LVH in the Valsartan Antihypertensive Long-Term Use Evaluation trial (VALUE).
METHODS: Of the 15 245 VALUE participants, we identified 13 803 patients without cardiovascular

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by left ventricular dilation associated with systolic dysfunction. The purpose of the current study is to clarify the effect of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) on myocardial fibrosis and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) of rats with DCM through the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. First, DCM rat models were established and sh-CTGF/CCN2 lentiviral expression vectors were constructed. Then, by observing the pathological changes and myocardial ultrastructure as well as detecting cardiac functions, myocardial fib

Currently, the cardiovascular risk associated with the use of anabolic steroids is not well documented. Recent studies have shown that its use may potentiate the development of cardiac dysfunction in the short term. This case report describes an encounter that supports a causal link between anabolic-androgenic steroid use (AAS) and cardiomyopathy later in life. We herein present a case study of a 73-year-old prior Olympic athlete who had misused AAS for 20 years and subsequently was found to have developed a systolic and diastolic cardiomyopathy, presumably due to long-standing left ventricula

BACKGROUND: To use cardiovascular magnetic resonance to investigate left ventricular wall thickness and the presence of asymmetrical hypertrophy in young army recruits before and after a period of intense exercise training.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance, the left ventricular wall thickness was measured in all 17 segments and a normal range was calculated for each. The prevalence of asymmetrical wall thickening was assessed before and after training and defined by a ventricular wall thickness ≥13.0 mm that was >1.5× the thickness of the opposing myocardial segmen

A 44-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of congestive heart failure. He had various symptoms caused by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, sensorineural deafness, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and cardiomyopathy associated with mitochondrial DNA point mutation A3243G. Echocardiography had showed symmetrical hypertrophy of the left ventricular wall and normal cardiac function (ejection fraction 55%) at age 32 years. However, echocardiography showed cardiac transformation, consisting of posterior wall thinning and significantly reduced cardiac function (ejection fraction 11%), a

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common finding in hypertensive autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients. There are few studies on the influence of blood pressure (BP) and nonhemodynamic factors on LVH in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between BP, humoral and neurohormonal factors and left ventricular mass (LVM) in hypertensive ADPKD patients. In 20 hypertensive ADPKD patients, ambulatory BP was monitored for 24 h, left ventricular dimensions were estimated by echocardiography, and plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma noradrena

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: Cardiac function after aortic valve replacement (AVR) for patients with small aortic annulus and increased left ventricular (LV) wall thickness has not been clearly defined. The study aim was to examine a potential relationship between postoperative catheterization data (or radionuclide LV cardiac function) and the size of the aortic valve ring of a small St. Jude Medical prosthesis.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients with small prosthesis (< or = 23 mm) were allocated to three groups based on the diameter of the native aortic annulus or aortic valve ring of the pro

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to test the hypothesis that local myocardial work and O2 consumption would respond differentially to milrinone, a selective cyclic AMP-phosphodiesterase inhibitor, in left ventricular hypertrophy due to differences in myocardial cyclic AMP-phosphodiesterase activity.
METHODS: The effect of milrinone on regional segment work and regional O2 consumption was measured in 12 open chest anaesthetised dogs with left ventricular hypertrophy induced by valvular aortic stenosis and in 10 age matched control dogs. Regional myocardial work was calculated as the integrated product o

Patients with the clinical diagnosis of ischemic heart disease who were found to be free of significant coronary artery atherosclerotic disease (n = 150) underwent coronary vasodilator reserve testing, 2-dimensional echocardiography, and dipyridamole limited-stress thallium testing. After exclusions (predominantly for technically poor coronary artery Doppler signals or suboptimal echocardiography), 100 patients formed the study population. The purpose was to characterize typical cardiac and coronary artery findings in hypertensive patients with severe left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (n = 15)

Invasive Doppler catheter-derived coronary flow reserve, echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular hypertrophy and intravenous dipyridamole-limited stress thallium-201 scintigraphy were compared in 48 patients (40 were hypertensive or diabetic) with clinical ischemic heart disease and no or minor coronary artery disease. Abnormal vasodilator reserve (ratio less than 3:1) occurred in 50% of the study group and markedly abnormal reserve (less than or equal to 2:1) occurred in 27%. Coronary vasodilator reserve was significantly lower (2.2 +/- 0.8 versus 3.5 +/- 1.3, p = 0.003) and indexe

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether improvement of left atrial (LA) and ventricular (LV) structure results in reduction in new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of the present study was to examine whether changes in-treatment LA diameter were related to changes in risk of new-onset AF.
METHODS: We followed 939 hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic LV hypertrophy randomized to atenolol or losartan-based regimens in the LIFE Study for a mean of 4.8 years with echocardiograms at enrolment and annually during treatment.
RESULTS: New-onset AF occurred in 46 patients (10.2/1000 patien

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the most common cause of pathological left ventricular hypertrophy, a condition causally associated with debilitating heart failure and cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients. It is well recognized that the disease burden of hypertension-linked heart failure remains unabated with existing treatments. New therapies controlling hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy are thus required to decelerate or prevent the development of heart failure. Our previous study has demonstrated that cinnamic acid, a naturally occurring monocarboxylic acid, mitigates transver

Pathologic cardiac hypertrophy is a common consequence of many cardiovascular diseases, including aortic stenosis (AS). AS is known to increase the pressure load of the left ventricle, causing a compensative response of the cardiac muscle, which progressively will lead to dilation and heart failure. At a cellular level, this corresponds to a considerable increase in the size of cardiomyocytes, known as cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, while their proliferation capacity is attenuated upon the first developmental stages. Cardiomyocytes, in order to cope with the increased workload (overload), suffer a

In Uganda, hypertension is a rapidly increasing non-communicable disease with high morbidity and mortality, leading to complications such as renal failure, heart failure, stroke, and myocardial infarctions. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) among hypertensive patients at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 323 participants using convenience sampling, the study utilized structured questionnaires and data was analyzed using STATA. Results indicated that factors independently associated with LVH i

BACKGROUND: Unexplained Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (ULVH) may be caused by genetic and non-genetic etiologies (e.g., sarcomere variants, cardiac amyloid, or Anderson-Fabry's disease). Identification of ULVH patients allows for early targeted treatment and family screening.
AIM: To automatically identify patients with ULVH in electronic health record (EHR) data using two computer methods: text-mining and machine learning (ML).
METHODS: Adults with echocardiographic measurement of interventricular septum thickness (IVSt) were included. A text-mining algorithm was developed to identify patien

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a marker of increased risk in developing future life-threatening cardiovascular disease (CVD), however, it is unclear how CVD risk factors, such as obesity, blood pressure (BP), and tobacco use, are associated with left ventricular (LV) remodeling and LVH in urban African populations. Therefore, we aimed to identify the prevalence of LVH as well as the health factors associated with LV remodeling and LVH, within black South African adult women and their pre-pubescent children.
METHODS: Black female adults (n = 123; age: 29-68 years) and their
