[Clinical and laboratory studies on SY5555 in pediatric infectious diseases].

Clinical effects of SY5555 dry syrup, a new oral penem antibiotic, were analysed in 20 children with various bacterial infections. Ages of the patients varied from 8 months to 14 years. Doses of SY5555 were varied from 12.8 mg/kg/day to 30.5 mg/kg/day, and it was administered in 3 divided dosages. Clinical efficacy rates were as follows; 6/7 in acute bronchitis, 5/5 in pharyngotonsillitis, 3/3 in acute otitis media and 2/2 in cystitis and 3/3 in impetigo contagiosa. The overall rate was 95.0% (19/20). Bacteriologically, eradications were obtained with 1/2 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, 3/3…

Staphylococcal toxin-mediated syndromes in childhood.

Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) are two distinct toxin-mediated syndromes with pro … roduce subgranular epidermolysis leading to SSSS. SSSS encompasses a clinical spectrum from bullous impetigo to the widespread exfoliation of the Ritter disease variant of SSSS. This entity usually occurs in children under 5 years of age, and is primarily explained by lack of immunity to the toxins as well as renal immaturity leading to poor clearance of t …

[Clinical evaluation of cefroxadine dry syrup in children (author's transl)].

Clinical efficacy of cefroxadine dry syrup, a new oral cephalosporin antibiotic, was evaluated in children, and the following results were o … th scarlet fever, 4 with bronchitis and tonsillitis, 2 with cystitis, 4 with pyelonephritis, 1 with impetigo and 1 with probable Mycoplasma pneumonia. An overall efficacy rate in 35 patients excluding the last mentioned case was 91.4%, i.e., excellent in 20, good in 12 and poor in 3, and an eradication rate of the causative organisms was 88.9%. 3. Bacteriological Study of Pyoderma.

Two hundred and twenty cases of pyoderma were investigated to study the bacterial aetiology. Folliculitis formed the largest-clinical group followed by infectious eczematoid dermatitis, secondary infection, impetigo, miscellaneous, furuncles and acne in descending order of frequency. A total of 172 micro-organisms were isolated from the infected specimens examined. A single infecting organism was isolated from 65.5% and more than one type of organism from 6.3% of cases. No organism was isolated from 62 (29.2%) cases, Coagulase positive staphylococcus was isolated from 107 (48.6%) beta haemolyt…

[Cutaneous infections in bullous pemphigoid patients treated with topical corticosteroids].

BACKGROUND: Potent topical corticosteroids (TCS), such as clobetasol propionate are more efficacious than systemic corticosteroids in the treatment of bullous pemphigoid (BP) and in reducing the rate of systemic infectious complications. However, TCS can have cutaneous side effects, such as atrophy and purpura. The risk of cutaneous infections due to TCS in BP is known but has never been studied, despite prolonged use of high doses. Since we noted three cases of fatal necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in patients treated with TCS for BP over a one-year period in our institution, we decided to analyse

Burn wound infections: current status.

The burn wound represents a susceptible site for opportunistic colonization by organisms of endogenous and exogenous origin. Patient factors … issue. Even after the wounds of extensively burned patients have healed or been grafted, burn wound impetigo, commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, may occur in the form of multifocal, small superficial abscesses that require surgical debridement. Current techniques of burn wound care have significantly reduced the incidence of invasive burn wound infe …

[Streptococcus group A infections of skin, soft tissue and blood].

BACKGROUND: Group A streptococcus is one of the most common bacterial pathogens causing infections in tissue and organs, most frequently throat and skin. Since the late 1980s there have been reports from Scandinavia and many other countries documenting a resurgence of highly invasive infections such as puerperal fever, necrotizing fasciitis, myositis and sepsis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On the basis of relevant studies and reviews and a clinical study of 61 patients between 1992 and 1999 with necrotizing fasciitis and myositis at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway, we present an overv

Common bacterial skin infections. Diagnostic clues and therapeutic options.

Prompt, accurate characterization of skin infections can help avoid serious, more invasive complications. With appropriate empirical therapy, treatment failure can be prevented. The authors of this article discuss several common skin infections, including bite wound infections, and recommend various drug regimens to consider when planning initial therapy.

[Clinical manifestations caused by group A streptococci].

We describe the symptomatology of different disease entities caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes, GAS). The case histories of four patients, two of whom died, emphasize the severity of certain clinical manifestations of GAS-infections. A 34 year-old woman was admitted to hospital four days after start of the symptoms. She presented a clinical picture very similar to that observed in fulminant meningococcal septicaemia; i.e. extensive skin haemorrhages, circulatory collapse, and multiple organ failure. She died within 12 hours of admission. GAS were isolated in

Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections of the skin.

Acute pyogenic infections of the skin, caused by hemolytic streptococci and S. aureus, account for the vast majority of bacterial infections of the skin seen in ambulatory practice. In preschool children the principal manifestation is pyoderma, which is usually caused by Group A Streptococcus. In this age group pyoderma regularly responds to systemic penicillin therapy plus adjunctive local care to the lesions. However, in older age groups, the ability to distinguish streptococcal from staphylococcal skin infections on the basis of clinical features alone is poor, and penicillin treatment fail

Delayed Newborn Bathing: Exploring Social Media Trends, Cultural Perspectives, and Dermatologic Implications.

BACKGROUND: Delayed bathing of newborns has gained popularity, particularly on social media platforms, with influencers promoting delays fro … vidence links delayed bathing with increased rates of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, bullous impetigo, or neonatal sepsis. Infection risk is more strongly determined by prematurity, maternal colonization status, and NICU exposures. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed bathing for healthy term newborns for at least 24 h is evidence-based, safe, and beneficial for s …
