Decision making, impulsivity, and addictions: do Parkinson's disease patients jump to conclusions?

Links between impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in treated Parkinson's disease (PD), behavioral addictions, and substance abuse have been postulated, but no direct comparisons have been carried out so far. We directly compared patients with PD with and without ICBs with illicit drug abusers, pathological gamblers, and age-matched healthy controls using the beads task, a test of reflection impulsivity, and a working memory task. We found that all patients with PD made more impulsive and irrational choices than the control group. PD patients who had an ICB showed similar behavior to illicit

Although dopamine replacement therapy has been used in Parkinson's disease since the 1960s, it is only recently that behavioral disorders associated with these drugs have been described. Gathered under the term "behavioral addiction", they include impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding. Whereas addiction per se occurs almost exclusively with levodopa, impulse control disorders appear preferentially during dopamine agonist therapy. The prevalence of these disorders is estimated to be 10-17% in Parkinson's disease, a rate far higher than in the general popu

Determination of alpha-1 antitrypsin genetic deficiency in duodenal ulcer by polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is one of the most important public health problems among young people. Potential risk factors that may cause vulnerability to smoke in youth should be well known and investigated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations of current smoking behavior and future smoking intention with high-risk personality traits for substance abuse in a clinical sample of Turkish adolescents, and also evaluate nicotine dependence and smoking characteristics with the personality traits in a subsample of regular smokers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was adopted in whi

Delay discounting of protected sex and compulsive sexual behavior in women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and unstable interpersonal relationships. Some individuals with BPD regularly engage in sexual risk behavior such as unprotected sex and are at higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections. This study investigates discounting of condom- or dental dam-protected sex in women with BPD compared with a control group. METHODS: Data were collected from 40 women diagnosed with BPD and 40 healthy controls with an average age of 27.28 years

Childhood emotional abuse and motor impulsiveness among male violent inmates with antisocial personality disorder.

This study aimed to explore the relationship among childhood maltreatment, impulsiveness and antisocial personality through a questionnaire survey of violent male inmates. We found that the scores of inmates with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) in Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-28 item Short Form (CTQ-SF) and Barratt Impulsive Scale-11 (BIS-11) were higher than those in the Non-Antisocial personality group, and there was a significant correlation between the scores of CTQ-SF and BIS-11. We found that the interaction between impulsivity and childhood abuse predicts ASPD levels. Moreover,

Aggressive responses to troubled situations in a sample of adolescents: a three-mode approach.

We developed a questionnaire for measuring aggressive behaviors, which was administered to a sample of 318 adolescents. The questionnaire consisted of six situations (three related to unknown people and three related to relatives) and seven possible behaviors (related to physical and verbal aggression and to anger). The corresponding person x situation x response data were analyzed using a three-mode component analysis. Furthermore, 127 participants also completed standard questionnaires related to aggressive behavior and impulsivity. Results showed the expected two latent dimensions for situa

Interpersonal precipitants and suicide attempts in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by multiple low lethality suicide attempts triggered by seemingly minor incidents, and less commonly by high lethality attempts that are attributed to impulsiveness or comorbid major depression. The relationships among life events, impulsiveness, and type of suicidal behavior has hardly been studied in BPD and mood disorders. This study compared depressed attempters with and without BPD to identify specific suicide precipitants and risk factors in BPD and their relationship to severity of suicidal behavior. Attempters with comorbid B

Suicidality, impulsivity and aggression--is there a link to 5HIAA concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid?

In biological suicide research, low cerebrospinal fluid-5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (CSF-5HIAA) concentrations have been associated with suicidality, aggression and impulsivity. However, it frequently appears that the interpretation of existing study results is flawed. The analysis of various published findings suggests that contaminating factors like impulsivity or depressive symptoms in suicide attempters are often not taken into consideration at the time of suicide. The seemingly 'robust' association of low CSF-5HIAA concentration with 'suicidality' and 'aggression' is in fact rather weak. Re

Functional Brain Network of Trait Impulsivity: Whole-Brain Functional Connectivity Predicts Self-Reported Impulsivity.

Given impulsivity's multidimensional nature and its implications across various aspects of human behavior, a comprehensive understanding of functional brain circuits associated with this trait is warranted. In the current study, we utilized whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity data of healthy males (n = 156) to identify a network of connections predictive of an individual's impulsivity, as assessed by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS)-11. Our participants were selected, in part, based on their self-reported BIS-11 impulsivity scores. Specifically, individuals who reported high

Impulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing debate regarding the role of impulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Impulsivity is a complex multidimensional construct, generally defined as the tendency to act without forethought. OCD, in contrast, is associated with preoccupation with the consequences of one's actions, harm and risk avoidance, and was posited to lie on the opposite end of a proposed impulsive-compulsive continuum. The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing OCD and non-clinical controls on self-report measures of impulsi

Hazardous Alcohol Use in Trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is a prevalent mental health condition characterized by repetitive hair-pulling. Its relationship to alcohol use problems has received virtually no research scrutiny. Adults with trichotillomania (n = 121) were recruited from the general community, along with 66 healthy controls for reference purposes (in terms of overall levels of hazardous drinking). Participants undertook structured clinical interview and completion of self-report instruments to characterize clinical profiles and associated characteristics. In the trichotillomania sample, we compared variables of interest b

Aggression, and some related psychological constructs (anger, hostility, and impulsivity); some comments from a research project.

The purpose of the present study was: first, to offer a few theoretical considerations on the concept of human aggression and its main types; and second, to analyse the relationship between those types of aggression and other related psychological constructs, such as anger, hostility, and impulsivity, summarizing the main empirical results of our research in progress. In order to assess their eventual correlations, several self-report techniques were compared: (a) AQ, used to measure several kinds of aggression, anger, and hostility; (b) CAMA, a questionnaire already used in a variety of cultu

Dialectical behavior therapy for comorbid personality disorders.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was originally designed as a treatment of emotionally dysregulated, impulsive, and dramatic disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder) and populations (e.g., parasuicidal women). However, a number of complex disorders represent the dialectical opposite of BPD and related disorders; these disorders are characterized by being overcontrolled, emotionally constricted, perfectionistic, and highly risk-averse. In this article, the authors introduce a recent adaptation of DBT that targets cognitive-behavioral rigidity and emotional constriction and illustrate

Dimensions and disorder specificity of impulsivity in pathological gambling.

Impulsivity is a core characteristic of pathological gambling (PG), even though the underlying structure and disorder specificity is unclear. This study aimed to explore different dimensions of impulsivity in a clinical sample including PG. Furthermore, we aimed to test which alterations of the impulsivity-related dimensions are disorder specific for PG. Participants were individuals diagnosed with PG (n=51) and two groups also characterized by various impulsive behaviors: an alcohol dependence (AD; n=45) and a Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS; n=49) group. A healthy control (HC; n=53) grou…

Suicide Risk of Heroin Dependent Subjects in Lebanon.

The aim is to determine the frequency of suicidal behavior and associated factors among heroin dependent inpatients. 61 heroin dependent inpatients (vs. 61 controls) were assessed on their pattern of substance use, impulsivity, depression and suicidal behavior. 37.7 % of patients had a personal history of suicidal attempt (SA), 14.8 % had current suicidal ideation. SA was associated to younger age at first substance use and to higher rates of depression and impulsivity. IV heroin overdose was the most frequent mode of SA (47.8 %). Long duration, multiple drug use, and family history of suicide
