Health care professionals and patients impacted by incarceration face unique medical, legal, and ethical issues. The frequency and nature of ethics consultations for these patients are underexplored. This study aimed to characterize the primary ethical issue and contextual features of ethics consultations involving patients impacted by incarceration. We conducted a qualitative concept content analysis of ethics consultations involving patients impacted by incarceration and calculated descriptive statistics of demographics to compare these patients with the broader population of patients impact…

The unprecedented liquid-liquid extraction of the dinegative chromate ion (CrO42-) from neutral aqueous solutions into aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents using nanojars as extraction agents is demonstrated. Transferring chromate from water into an organic solvent is extremely challenging due to its large hydration energy (ΔGh° = -950 kJ/mol) and strong oxidizing ability. Owing to their highly hydrophilic anion binding pockets lined by a multitude of hydrogen bond donor OH groups, neutral nanojars of the formula [cis-CuII(μ-OH)(μ-4-Rpz)]n (n = 27-33; pz = pyrazolate anion; R = H or n-octyl) strongl

Scholars have proposed that incarceration rates might be reduced by a requirement that judges justify incarceration decisions with respect to their operational costs (e.g., prison capacity). In an Internet-based vignette experiment (N = 214), we tested this prediction by examining whether criminal punishment judgments (prison vs. probation) among university undergraduates would be influenced by a prompt to provide a justification for one's judgment, and by a brief message describing prison capacity costs. We found that (1) the justification prompt alone was sufficient to reduce incarceration r…

BACKGROUND: Acute incisional hernia incarceration is associated with high morbidity and mortality yet there is little evidence to guide which patients will benefit most from prophylactic repair. We explored baseline computed tomography (CT) characteristics associated with incarceration.
METHODS: A case-control study design was utilized to explore adults (≥18 years) diagnosed with an incisional hernia between 2010 and 2017 at a single institution with a 1-year minimum follow-up. Computed tomography imaging at the time of initial hernia diagnosis was examined. Following propensity score matchin…

We created and implemented the Pathways for Parents after Incarceration Program (P4P), a multilevel intervention that focuses on strengthening positive parenting skills, building constructive co-parenting strategies, providing social support, and connecting families to needed specialized services. IMPORTANCE: The US has high rates of adverse birth outcomes, with substantial racial disparities augmented by stress and neighborhood disadvantage. Black people are more likely to live in neighborhoods with high rates of incarceration, which is a source of both stress and neighborhood disadvantage and, thus, may contribute to adverse birth outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether neighborhoods with high incarceration rates also have higher rates of adverse birth outcomes compared with neighborhoods with lower rates.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used publicly…

Background: People who experience incarceration have poor health across a variety of indicators, but we lack population-level data on the health of females in particular. We examined the health status of females released from provincial prison, and compared their data with data for males released from provincial prison and females in the general population in Ontario, Canada in 2010. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using linked correctional and health administrative data. We compared sociodemographic data, morbidity, mortality, and use of health care for (1) females released…

IMPORTANCE: More than half of the adult population in the United States has ever had a family member incarcerated, an experience more common among Black individuals. The impacts of family incarceration on well-being are not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations of incarceration of a family member with perceived well-being and differences in projected life expectancy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationally representative cross-sectional study used data from the 2018 Family History of Incarceration Survey to examine how experiences of family member incarceration w…

Understanding long-run patterns in the incarceration of Black Americans requires integrating the study of racial inequality with the study of political economy. I offer a parsimonious framework describing how the Black incarceration rate has been affected by the dynamics of exploitation and exclusion over time and across space. This framework helps to explain otherwise puzzling facts, like why the Black incarceration rate was lower in the South than in the North for much of the 20th century, why it was lowest in the South’s cotton belt, and why it began to tick upward when it did. It also enab…

IMPORTANCE: The association between incarceration and long-term mortality risk is unknown and may contribute to racial disparities in overall life expectancy.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether incarceration in the US is associated with an increase in mortality risk and whether this association is different for Black compared with non-Black populations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This generational retrospective cohort study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, a nationally representative cohort of noninstitutionalized youths aged 15 to 22 years, from January 1 …

Individuals just released from prison, or returning citizens (RCs), face high mortality rates during the reentry period, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being a leading cause. Peer mentors can support RCs' health, but they traditionally work in person, which may not always be feasible, particularly during pandemic outbreaks such as COVID-19. We used human-centered design to build a prototype of RCPeer, a web/mobile application (app) to support peer-led reentry efforts through CVD risk screening, action planning, linkage to resources addressing reintegration needs (e.g., housing, transportati

PURPOSE: This study aims to review international literature systematically to estimate the prevalence of homelessness among incarcerated persons at the time of imprisonment and the time of discharge.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A systematic review methodology was used to identify quantitative observational studies that looked at the prevalence of homelessness at the time of imprisonment, or up to 30 days prior to that point (initial homelessness), and at the time of discharge from prisons. Studies reported in English from inception to 11 September 2019 were searched for using eight databases

OBJECTIVES: To examine population-level associations between paternal jail incarceration during pregnancy and infant birth outcomes using objective measures of health and incarceration.
METHODS: We use multivariate logistic regression models and linked records on all births and jail incarcerations in New York City between 2010 and 2016.
RESULTS: 0.8% of live births were exposed to paternal incarceration during pregnancy or at the time of birth. After accounting for parental sociodemographic characteristics, maternal health behaviors, and maternal health care access, paternal incarceration du…

Jails and prisons are major sites of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Many jurisdictions in the United States have therefore accele … ented cases in Chicago as of April 19, 2020. Our findings support arguments for reduced reliance on incarceration and for related justice reforms both as emergency measures during the present pandemic and as sustained structural changes vital for future pandemic preparedness and public health.

We examine how solitary confinement correlates with self-reported adverse physical health outcomes, and how such outcomes extend the understanding of the health disparities associated with incarceration. Using a mixed methods approach, we find that solitary confinement is associated not just with mental, but also with physical health problems. Given the disproportionate use of solitary among incarcerated people of color, these symptoms are most likely to affect those populations. Drawing from a random sample of prisoners (n = 106) in long-term solitary confinement in the Washington State Depar…
