Penicillin (PCN) may cause a reaction in up to 10% of the population. No study has examined PCN skin testing longitudinally over a 20-year period. A total of 122 patients underwent PCN skin testing between September 1978 and May 1998. Patients were skin tested with the major determinant, penicilloyl polylysine, and three minor determinants, PCN, benzylpenilloate, and benzylpenicilloate. Ten of a total of 122 patients had positive skin test reactions. Nine reactions were to penicilloyl polylysine and one reaction was to the minor determinant benzylpenilloate. In 1915 Gadamer published in this journal [1] a procedure for the synthesis of papaverinol 2 from papaverine 1 in excellent yield. However, he did not investigate the formation of a violet fluorescence produced upon crystallization of papaverinol 2 from ethanol. The compound responsible for this fluorescence was isolated and identified as the yet unknown quaternary ammonium ion 4, a 6a, 12a-diazadibenzo-[a, g]fluorenylium derivative. The isolation of 4 and its structure determination by spectroscopic methods are described. However, its formation mechanism is unknown.

Starting from a nonracemic planar-chiral arene tricarbonyl chromium complex, an epimer of the bioactive marine diterpene helioporin B was synthesized in a highly stereoselective fashion. The stereostructure of the product (11-epi-helioporin B) corresponds to that of other serrulatane-type natural products. In a key step of the synthesis, 2-lithioacetonitrile undergoes conjugate nucleophilic addition to an unsaturated complex. Remarkably, this addition occurs in an endo mode, i.e., from the complexed face of the pi-ligand.

Hemoglobin A2 (HbA2) comprises about 2.2% of the total hemoglobin in the erythrocytes. The separation and quantitation of this minor hemoglobin by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using an arginine Tris buffer is described. Some of the variables affecting the accuracy and precision of HbA2 quantification are investigated. Furthermore, the quantification of this hemoglobin by CE is compared to that of a microcolumn chromatography method. The CE method is better suited than the microcolumn method for measuring HbA2 in the sickle cell trait.

A new chromatographic method for the determination of amino acids is proposed. The method is based on the separation of amino acids by means of ion-pair liquid chromatography and post-column derivatization using 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate. A programmed temperature gas chromatographic method is presented by which it is possible to carry out routine analysis of methyl mercury in biological samples prepared according to the AOAC official first action recommendations without the need for preliminary treatment of the columns. This method greatly extends the life of the columns as well as the useful time for analysis; it has good linearity and repeatability. With the proposed method a total of 36 samples can be analyzed daily.

Antisera obtained for certain hormones possessed a high specific effect on homologous hormones. Radioimmunological methods were worked out for determination of these hormones in the blood serum of humans and animals. Clinical use of the above antisera for determination of dehydroepiandrosterone and androstenedione in humans revealed than it could be useful to determine dehydroepiandrosterone in some forms of hypogonadism. Androstenedione is often increased in female hirsutism.
