Vitamin D deficiency (VitDD) rickets and other manifestations of severe VitDD, such as cardiomyopathy and hypocalcemic seizures, continue to be diagnosed in Canada. Breastfed Indigenous infants, particularly those living in northern communities, are disproportionately impacted, although formula-fed infants are not exempt in cases where the mother's vitamin D status is critically low. This statement deals with the prevention of rickets and hypocalcemia due to VitDD for Indigenous children, and revises an earlier document from the Canadian Paediatric Society. An assessment of the risk for VitDD

Despite advances in atopic dermatitis (AD) treatments, research into AD prevention has been slow. Systematic reviews of prevention strategies promoting exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding, or interventions that reduce ingested or airborne allergens during pregnancy and after birth have generally not shown convincing benefit. Maternal/infant supplements such as Vitamin D have also not shown any benefit with the possible exception of omega-3 fatty acids. Systematic reviews suggest that probiotics could reduce AD incidence by around 20%, although the studies are quite variable and might benefit

The vitamin B12 reserves of newborns are dependent on transplacental transfer and secondarily on food intake. This vitamin is involved in hematopoiesis and in neurological development. We report the case of a severe vitamin B12 deficiency in a 7-month-old infant. A neurological evaluation performed at 5 months of age for psychomotor regression found nonspecific cortical atrophy. The infant was hospitalized for impaired general condition and worsening of neurological symptoms. Examinations revealed bicytopenia with normocytic anemia (Hb: 7.4g/dl, MCV : 84μm3). The combination of psychomotor reg

A 7-month-old infant, with no known food allergy or intolerance, presenting with eczema lesions affecting many parts of his body, was diagnosed with infantile eczema. A skin barrier defect, due to filaggrin deficiency, was suspected. Prior treatment with emollients was not effective and produced discomfort. After twice-daily application of methylprednisolone aceponate (MPA) 0.1% (Advantan(®)), in addition to temporary withdrawal of emollients, for 10 days. At the follow-up examination, improvements in all eczema lesions, scratching behavior and sleep quality were observed, and eczema was consi

Iron deficiency is one of the main causes of anemia in the world, especially in children and women, so food fortification through microencapsulation is a viable alternative to combat this deficiency. The present work aimed to encapsulate iron in a water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion (W1/O/W2), which was formed with whey protein isolate and polyglycerol polyricinoleate as the emulsifying agents, tara gum as a thickening agent, and sucrose as an osmotic active substance. The double emulsion formed with 12% whey protein isolate, 0.8% tara gum, and 2% sucrose presented high encapsulation efficie

Low-density foreign objects (LDFOs) in foods pose significant safety risks to consumers. Existing detection methods, such as metal and X-ray detectors, have limitations in identifying low-density and nonmetallic contaminants. To address these challenges, our research group constructed and optimized a continuous-wave sub-terahertz (THz) imaging system for the real-time, on-site detection of LDFOs in infant snacks. The system was optimized by adjusting the attenuation value from 0 to 9 dB and image processing parameters [White (W), Black (B), and Gamma (G)] from 0 to 100. Its detectability was e

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related mortality among children aged 5-14 years in Mexico, with acute leukemia being the most common cancer among infants. Examining the overall dietary patterns allows for a comprehensive assessment of food and nutrient consumption, providing a more predictive measure of disease risk than individual foods or nutrients. This study aims to evaluate the association between maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy and the risk of acute leukemia in Mexican infants.
METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted, comparing

Oral tolerance is the active absence of response to food allergens, which involves complex mechanisms in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Food allergy results from the disruption of such tolerance or the absence of its establishment in the first place. It follows allergic sensitization with the production of allergen-specific IgE and results from the degranulation of basophils and mast cells on subsequent exposure to the allergen. Oral tolerance induction has been explored in the contexts of prevention and treatment of food allergy. Early introduction of allergenic foods (i.e., egg and pean

IgE-mediated allergic reactions to foods represent the earliest and most important manifestation of allergic diseases in childhood. Sensitization to foods may happen very early in life. Basic options for alimentary allergy prevention are breast-feeding of at least 4 months and in case nursing is impossible, use of an alternative hypoallergenic formula. The most common food allergens in childhood are cow's milk, hen's egg, peanuts, tree nuts and wheat. The prevalence of food allergies in childhood is 2 to 6%. In up to 50% of infants and children with atopic eczema, food allergies play a role; v

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is high among infants younger than two years old, especially in disadvantaged populations.
OBJECTIVE: To study certain social and biological determinants associated with IDA in children aged 12 to 23.9 months old in Northeast Argentina in the 2004-2005 period.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional design. Explanatory outcome measures were organized in three levels: distal (food assistance, unmet basic needs, and head of household with medical coverage), intermediate (breastfeeding, iron supplementation, and iron intake), and proximal (nutri

Background Botulism is a rare, life-threatening, time-critical neuroparalytic disease that is frequently a subject of differential diagnostic considerations. But there is much uncertainty regarding diagnosis and therapy. Rapid diagnosis, early antitoxin dose, consistent food hygiene and the sensitization of the population can help to reduce incidence, morbidity and mortality. Methods This overview is based on an epidemiological data inquiry (RKI, ECDC, CDC, WHO) and a selective literature research (pubmed till March 2017). Additionally, the German botulism guideline (2012) and own diagnostical

Parental and infant factors (eg pre-pregnancy maternal BMI, gestational body weight, breast or formula feeding) are known to influence the risk of developing obesity in later life, but whether this is influenced by their effects on appetite traits is unknown. We investigated the influence of developmental factors associated with obesity on appetite traits in infancy. Appetite traits were assessed by maternal completion of the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 2-4 weeks and 6 months and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 12 months in a cohort of 432 infants born in Cyprus and foll

BACKGROUND: The nature and severity of 3 categories of maternal stressors (nutritional, infectious, and psychosocial) that may impact maternal health and early infant growth are not often considered together.
OBJECTIVES: To describe quantitative methodologies; assess construct validity of questionnaires; report variability in sociodemographic, obstetric, nutritional, infectious, and psychosocial characteristics; and compare characteristics between pregnancy and lactation and between study cohorts of Mam-Mayan mother-infant dyads.
METHODS: Grounded in participatory action research and a socio

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether breast milk (BM) macronutrient composition in the first 2 weeks postpartum is associated with subsequent infant regurgitation (IR) risk, independent of maternal dietary intake.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study (Beijing, China), 78 mother-infant dyads were followed for 5 months. BM samples were collected at 1-2 weeks, 1, 2, and 5 months postpartum. IR was diagnosed using Rome IV criteria. Macronutrient composition (protein, fat, lactose) was analyzed using standardized methods. Maternal diet was assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. Mult

BACKGROUND: Breast milk (BM) is a highly beneficial nutritional resource for infant health and growth; however, contamination of this primary food may pose a risk to infant health.
METHODS: This study analyzed the concentrations of major and trace elements in 58 randomly selected BM samples from lactating mothers, assessed health risks to infants, and examined correlations between elemental levels and maternal dietary, sociodemographic, and lifestyle factors. Elemental analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
RESULTS: The concentrations of essential

INTRODUCTION: Although breast milk is the ideal food source for newborns during the first six months of life, a high percentage of children receive infant formulas. There is evidence that specific diet habits may influence individual metabolic profile. Therefore, in newborns, such profile can be influenced by the use of infantile formulas given the composition differences that display compared to human milk. Up to now, there are no reports in the literature that address this issue.
OBJECTIVES: this work aims to compare the metabolic profile of full-term newborns that were feed with either bre

OBJECTIVES: Maternal lifestyles, including diet, have been linked to infant birthweight. However, customised birthweight centiles (CBWC), which more accurately identify small babies that have increased fetal growth restriction and are at higher risk of newborn morbidity and later life health complications, are rarely considered when studying maternal diet. This study investigated maternal dietary patterns and their impact on infant CBWC within a cohort of women living in South Wales.
METHODS: This study utilised cross-sectional data from the longitudinal Grown in Wales (GiW) cohort. Women 18-

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown effects of prenatal exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) on infants in the general environmental levels. Laboratory animal studies have shown that exposure to PFOS and PFOA is associated with immunotoxic effects.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between maternal PFOS and PFOA levels and infant allergies and infectious diseases during the first 18 months of life. Cord blood immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels were also evaluated.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of pregnant women from 2002 to 2005
