Nutrition in the neonate.

Good nutrition is of great importance for all living individuals, especially for the rapidly growing newborn infant. Nutrition is needed not only for the maintenance of physiologic functions but also for growth. Despite extensive research in this field, numerous questions remain regarding the nutrition of the term as well as the preterm infant. It should be stressed that the requirements of term infants are different from those of preterm infants, and a further distinction has to be made between very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight infants. In this review, the following issues

Enrichment of Formula in Probiotics or Prebiotics and Risk of Infection and Allergic Diseases up to Age 5.5 Years in the Nationwide Etude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) Cohort.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of infant and follow-on formulas are enriched with probiotics and/or prebiotics; however, evidence for health effects of such enrichment in early childhood remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to assess whether the consumption of formula enriched with probiotics or prebiotics was associated with the risk of infection and allergic diseases in early childhood. METHODS: Analyses involved data for 8389 formula-fed children from the Etude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) cohort. Enrichment of the formula with probiotics or prebi

Serum zinc and copper concentrations in low birth weight infants during first three months of life: correlation to birth weight and different feedings.

Serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations were measured in infants weighing 740 g to 2,500 g at birth. They were divided into three groups depending on their birth weight; Group I ranged from 740 to 1,500 g (N = 35), Group II from 1,501 to 2,000 g (N = 26), and Group III from 2,001 to 2,500 g (N = 19). They were fed breast milk (N = 24), commercially available non-supplemented formula with low Zn and low Cu content (N = 42), or Zn- and Cu-supplemented formula (N = 14). Serum Zn levels of breast fed infants were apparently higher than those of the other two different formula fed infants, t

Hazards of overconcentrated milk formula. Hyperosmolality, disseminated intravascular coagulation and gangrene.

Severe hypertonic dehydration with hyperglycemia developed in a 7-week-old infant girl after she was fed an overconcentrated milk formula for five days. Renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, gangrene of the legs, and coma were added complications. Intravenous rehydration, peritoneal dialysis, and heparin administration corrected the metabolic and coagulation derangements, and renal function returned to normal. Bilateral below-the-knee amputations were performed and the child subsequently learned to walk with artificial limbs. The dangers of overconcentrated formulas in infant f

Amino acid formula induces microbiota dysbiosis and depressive-like behavior in mice.

Amino acid formula (AAF) is increasingly consumed in infants with cow's milk protein allergy; however, the long-term influences on health are less described. In this study, we established a mouse model by subjecting neonatal mice to an amino acid diet (AAD) to mimic the feeding regimen of infants on AAF. Surprisingly, AAD-fed mice exhibited dysbiotic microbiota and increased neuronal activity in both the intestine and brain, as well as gastrointestinal peristalsis disorders and depressive-like behavior. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation from AAD-fed mice or AAF-fed infants to recip

Revisiting One-Carbon Metabolites in Human Breast Milk: Focus on S-Adenosylmethionine.

Breastfeeding is the gold standard for early nutrition. Metabolites from the one-carbon metabolism pool are crucial for infant development. The aim of this study is to compare the breast-milk one-carbon metabolic profile to other biofluids where these metabolites are present, including cord and adult blood plasma as well as cerebrospinal fluid. Breast milk (n = 142), cord blood plasma (n = 23), maternal plasma (n = 28), aging adult plasma (n = 91), cerebrospinal fluid (n = 92), and infant milk formula (n = 11) samples were analyzed by LC-MS/MS to quantify choline, betaine, methionine, S-adenos

The bacterial gut microbiome of probiotic-treated very-preterm infants: changes from admission to discharge.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is associated with the development of acute and chronic disease, potentially, through the disruption of normal gut microbiome development. Probiotics may correct for microbial imbalances and mitigate disease risk. Here, we used amplicon sequencing to characterise the gut microbiome of probiotic-treated premature infants. We aimed to identify and understand variation in bacterial gut flora from admission to discharge and in association with clinical variables. METHODS: Infants born <32 weeks gestation and <1500 g, and who received probiotic treatment, were recruited i

Preparation of an anti-vitamin A monoclonal antibody resistant to matrix interference and its application in quantitative immunochromatographic analysis.

Vitamin A (VA) deficiency can lead to abnormal immune system function and jeopardize health. Therefore, a simple and specific method for determining VA is needed. We analyzed the structure of hapten for the preparation of an anti-VA monoclonal antibody (mAb), assisted by computer simulation. The solution's organic solvent content was optimized during mAbs screening, taking into account its effect on antibody performance. Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (CGIA) strips were developed and applied to the detection of VA in infant formula, cheese, and VA dietary supplements, utilizing the…

Discovery of Novel Probiotic Species to Improve Infant Health.

UNLABELLED: Selecting an appropriate infant formula can be challenging for parents given the wide range of available options, which may lead to suboptimal choices or frequent switching. Our recent studies in mice demonstrated that the maternal microbiota-particularly Limosilactobacillus reuteri present in breast milk-plays a critical role in shaping neonatal immunity by promoting the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA), a key antibody for defense against enteric pathogens. To extend these findings to humans, we analyzed fecal samples from healthy breastfed infants using shotgun metagenomic se…

Early-life supplementation with 2'-FL promotes the structural and functional integrity of the brain in mice at weaning and adolescence.

2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) was found to improve cognitive function and was approved for use in infant formula. Given that brain maturation continues through adolescence and even into adulthood, the extent of 2'-FL's cognitive benefits remains to be evaluated. This study administered 2'-FL to mice from 4 to 42 days of age and evaluated its benefits on structural and functional development following LPS challenge. Both 0.5 and 2 mg/g body weight/day 2'-FL significantly upregulated genes related to neurodevelopment (NGF, BDNF), myelination (MBP, Olig2), and synaptic function (PSD95, Synaptophysin,…

Some new and important clues to the causes of colic.

Colic, or persistent unexplained crying in infants, is commonly encountered by health professionals. While not harmful to the child, it can place a great deal of stress on the parents and family. The cause of colic has not been definitively identified. Transient lactose intolerance, as a result of inadequate production of the enzyme lactase, is one possibility. Studies have shown a reduced crying time when formula or breast milk is incubated with lactase. Colief Infant Drops consist of lactase in a glycerol and water solution which, when added to formula or breast milk, converts lactose to sim

[Significance of hypo-osmolar diets for oral nutrition build-up in very severe malabsorption--clinical observations exemplified by infants with subtotal small intestine resection].

Regenerative and adaptive processes of the gut are apparently analogous to the absorption rate in small bowel diseases. These processes can be enhanced by the prolongation of passage time which, in turn, is influenced by the osmolality of the formula diet. Since infants who have undergone a subtotal bowel resection, like other children with serious diseases of the small bowel, are extraordinarily sensitive to hyperosmolar food, any preparation with special indications should be balanced and rendered hypoosmolar in full caloric concentration. Such formulas may well facilitate food supply to inf

Effect of carbohydrate ingested on outcome in infants with mild gastroenteritis.

Children with mild acute gastroenteritis have not been observed for specific evidence of lactose intolerance yet are frequently fed a nonlactose formula. To determine whether such intervention is justified, 85 infants with mild acute gastroenteritis were followed prospectively. Infants were blindly and randomly assigned to 20 calorie/oz formula containing one of four carbohydrates: lactose, sucrose, polycose, or combined sucrose-polycose. Daily diaries were kept by parents, and patients were reexamined on days 2, 7, and 14 of the study. Evidence for rotavirus was detected in 23 infants, and fi

Increased excretion of a brain depressor amine in infantile coeliac disease and in healthy infants on a high protein milk diet.

Urinary excretion of piperidine, a heterocyclic pressor amine of gut bacterial origin and nicotine-like activity in the brain, has been estimated by a gas chromatography method in healthy men and women, in normal breast-fed and formula-fed infants and in infants with untreated coeliac disease. The excretion of piperidine cannot usually be detected during the first week of life. The amount present in urine increases upon weaning with higher excretion in formula-fed than in breast-fed infants at four to six months of age. When premature infants fed on human milk are weaned, the urinary content o
