IL-10 Overexpression After BCG Vaccination Does Not Impair Control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection.

Control of tuberculosis depends on the rapid expression of protective CD4+ T-cell responses in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-infected lungs. We have recently shown that the immunomodulatory cytokine IL-10 acts intrinsically in CD4+ T cells and impairs their parenchymal migratory capacity, thereby preventing control of Mtb infection. Herein, we show that IL-10 overexpression does not impact the protection conferred by the established memory CD4+ T-cell response, as BCG-vaccinated mice overexpressing IL-10 only during Mtb infection display an accelerated, BCG-induced, Ag85b-specific CD4+

Optimal control strategy analysis for an human-animal brucellosis infection model with multiple delays.

Firstly, we consider an animal-human infection model of brucellosis with three distributed delays, representing the latent period of brucellosis in infected animal and human population and the survival time of brucella in the environment, respectively. The equilibrium points and basic reproduction number R 0 are calculated. By building appropriate Lyapunov functionals and applying LaSalle's invariance principle, the sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability of two equilibria are given. Secondly, by introducing four control variables, we set the corresponding optimal control mode

Nitric oxide contributes to liver inflammation and parasitic burden control in Ascaris suum infection.

BACKGROUND: Human ascariasis is one of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases worldwide. The immune response during human ascariasis is characterized by Th2 polarization and a mixed Th2/Th17 response during the pathogenesis of experimental larval ascariasis. Cytokines and other pro-inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), are involved in helminthic infections. However, the role of NO in ascariasis remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: Given the importance of NO in inflammation, we aimed to determine the immunological and histopathological alterations in the livers of C57BL/6 iNOS-/-

Nano Drug Delivery Platforms for Dental Application: Infection Control and TMJ Management-A Review.

The oral cavity is an intricate environment subjected to various chemical, physical, and thermal injuries. The effectiveness of the local and systemically administered drugs is limited mainly due to their toxicities and poor oral bioavailability that leads to the limited effectiveness of the drugs in the target tissues. To address these issues, nanoparticle drug delivery systems based on metals, liposomes, polymeric particles, and core shells have been developed in recent years. Nano drug delivery systems have applications in the treatment of patients suffering from temporomandibular joint dis

TSC1 Suppresses Macrophage Necroptosis for the Control of Infection by Fungal Pathogen Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is the most common, opportunistic human fungal pathogen whose complex interplay with the host innate immune system remains incompletely understood. In this study, we revealed that infection macrophages with C. albicans triggers prominent cell death, which is largely attributed to the RIPK3/MLKL-mediated necroptosis. Our results further demonstrated that the TSC1-mTOR pathway plays a pivotal role in the control of macrophage necroptosis upon engaging the Dectin-1/2 and TLR-2/4 pathways through fungal components β-glucan/α-mannan or Sel1, respectively. Notably, the rapamycin-sen

Infection Control in the Era of Antimicrobial Resistance in China: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities.

More than 3 decades have passed since infection control was implemented nationwide in China in 1986. A comprehensive set of regulations and guidelines has been developed, and almost all hospitals have established infection control teams. However, compliance is variable and is usually suboptimal. The incidence of certain multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), including carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP), is increasing, and associated infections are mainly hospital-acquired in China. Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginos…

Impact of COVID-19 infection control measures on influenza-related outcomes in Hong Kong.

Following the announcement of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Wuhan on 31 December 2019, government officials in Hong Kong recommended the wearing of face masks as a public infection control measure against the COVID-19 virus and curtail the impact of the concurrent influenza season. The present study evaluated the influenza-related outcomes between the influenza season 2019 and 2020 in Hong Kong as a result of these infection control measures. A Monte Carlo simulation model was designed to estimate the number of influenza cases, clinic visits, hospitalization, deaths, direct medi…

Genetic susceptibility to rotavirus infection in Chinese children: a population-based case-control study.

Rotaviruses (RVs) are the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in children, while histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are believed to be host attachment and susceptibility factors of RVs. A large case-control study nested in a population-based diarrhea surveillance targeting children <5 y of age was performed in rural Hebei province, north China. Saliva and serum samples were collected from all participants to determine HBGA phenotyping, FUT2 mutations, and RV IgG antibody titers. A logistic model was employed to assess the association between host HBGA secretor status and risk of RV infectio

Phage Therapy as an Approach to Control Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis Infection in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a cause of food-borne human illness. Given the prevalence of antibiotic resistance of Salmonella Enteritidis and the lack of antibiotic efficacy in future years, its replacement with other agents is necessary. One of the most useful agents is bacteriophages. METHODS: S. Enteritidis was identified using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay. The effective bacteriophages were isolated from hospital wastewater samples. The effects of the bacteriophages were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: The phage SE

Antibiotic stewardship and horizontal infection control are more effective than screening, isolation and eradication.

PURPOSE: The global rise of multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) is of major concern since infections by these pathogens are difficult, and in some cases, even impossible to treat. This review will discuss the effectiveness of a pathogen-independent alternative approach consisting of the implementation of antibiotic stewardship (ABS) programs, improvement of hand hygiene compliance, and daily antiseptic body washings instead of "screening, isolation and eradication" as recommended by many infection control guidelines today. METHODS: A review of the literature. RESULTS: The classical approac…
