BACKGROUND: Triatomine recognition by the public is an important factor in Chagas disease (CD) prevention campaigns. Citizen surveillance has been demonstrated as an effective alternative strategy, increasing the possibility of monitoring vector populations on a broad geographic scale. Thus, our study aimed to explore a database built from pictorial/video records and specimens sent through citizen participation, identify the main groups confused with triatomines, and systematize the data on insect diversity.
METHODS: Due to demand from the local community, the "WhatsBarb" project was establis

Insect attachment devices and capabilities have been subject to research efforts for decades, and even though during that time considerable progress has been made, numerous questions remain. Different types of attachment devices are known, alongside most of their working principles, however, some details have yet to be understood. For instance, it is not clear why insects for the most part developed pairs of claws, instead of either three or a single one. In this paper, we investigated the gripping forces generated by the stick insect Sungaya inexpectata, in dependence on the number of availab

Allatostatin Type-C (AstC) is an insect neuropeptide involved in developmental regulation, but whether its conserved C-terminal pentapeptide, PISCF, remains bioactive as an isolated fragment is unclear. Herein, the synthetic PISCF was evaluated on the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, with AstC as a reference. Under sublethal exposure, PISCF suppressed larval growth, reduced relative consumption rate by 47.8-62.5%, impaired nutrient utilization, and modestly advanced molting. It also induced a time-dependent juvenile hormone (JH)-associated response: JH III decreased at 24 h, reached its

The female germline cells must ensure that only fully functional mitochondria are transmitted to the next generation. Although mitophagy has been implicated in mitochondrial maintenance in numerous systems, its occurrence during insect oogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we analyzed previtellogenic oocytes of the bush-cricket, Roeseliana roeselii using transmission electron microscopy, histochemistry, and immunocytochemistry. Our ultrastructural analyses revealed numerous membrane-bound compartments within the ooplasm. These structures were consistently associated with antibody signals

Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP), a key enzyme in trehalose biosynthesis, represents a promising target for pest and fungal control due to the absence of TPP in higher animals. However, few TPP inhibitors have been reported, and broad-spectrum agents targeting both insects and fungi remain scarce. In this study, 2-cinnamoylbenzimidazole was identified as a dual-targeting inhibitor scaffold against insect and fungal TPPs. Structure-guided optimization by pocket size yielded 5-1 (Ki = 1.3 μM) for insect TPP and 5-3 (Ki = 17.3 μM) for fungal TPP. Molecular docking revealed that 2-cinnamoyl

Gustatory receptors (Grs) have an essential role in chemical recognition so as to evaluate food quality. Insect Grs also participate in non-gustatory functions, such as olfaction, temperature sensing, and mating. In this study, we knocked out NlugGr23a, a putative fecundity-related Gr, using the CRISPR/Cas9 system in the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens, a serious insect pest of rice. Surprisingly, homozygous NlugGr23a mutant (NlugGr23a-/-) males were sterile but their sperm were motile and morphologically normal. DAPI staining of mutant sperm inseminated eggs showed that most of NlugGr23a

The damage caused by Anticarsia gemmatalis motivates this study on the adaptive mechanisms of the insect to soybean. The lipoxygenase pathway produces and releases jasmonic acid, involved in the regulation of the plant defense genes, which encodes protease inhibitor (PI) production. Three soybean cultivars IAC-18, IAC-24, and Foscarin-31 were sprayed with water and berenil, a synthetic inhibitor, at 0.60 and 1.0% (w/v) and then infested with A. gemmatalis larvae. The lipoxygenase (LOX) activity increased in the leaves of Foscarin-31, IAC-18, and IAC-24 by 87, 81, and 78%, respectively, after 2

The search for novel insect repellents has been driven by health concerns over established synthetic compounds such as diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). Given the diversity of compounds known from frog skin and records of mosquito bite and ectoparasite infestation, the presence of mosquito repellents in frogs seemed plausible. We investigated frog skin secretions to confirm the existence of mosquito repellent properties. Litoria caerulea secretions were assessed for mosquito repellency by topical application on mice. The secretions provided protection against host-seeking Culex annulirostris mosquit

Edible insects are increasingly promoted as alternative foods, but their chemical safety is difficult to assess because hazards may arise throughout the production chain and the regulatory framework remains incomplete. This structured narrative review synthesises current evidence on chemical hazards in edible insects and examines their interpretation within the European Union regulatory framework. The available literature indicates that rearing substrates and production environments are major sources of contamination, particularly for heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues, veterinary me

The importin α family belongs to the conserved nuclear transport pathway in eukaryotes. However, the biological functions of importin α in the plasma membrane are still elusive. Here, we report that importin α, as a plasma membrane-associated protein, is exploited by the rice stripe virus (RSV) to enter vector insect cells, especially salivary gland cells. When the expression of three importin α genes was simultaneously knocked down, few virions entered the salivary glands of the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus Through hemocoel inoculation of virions, only importin α2 was found

Orcokinin and orcomyotropin were originally described as neuropeptides in crustaceans but have now been uncovered in many species of insects in which they are called orcokinin-A (OK-A) and orcokinin-B (OK-B), respectively. The two groups of mature peptides are products of alternatively spliced transcripts of the single copy gene orcokinin in insects. We investigated the expression patterns and the functions of OK-A and OK-B in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry using isoform-specific probes and antibodies for each OK-A and OK-B suggests tha

Determination of the rate of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in its triatomine vectors is an element in control programmes directed at reducing transmission of the organism to humans. Traditionally, T. cruzi has been detected in these insects by microscopical examination of intestinal contents or excreta. The sensitivity of this laborious process has not been defined because of the lack of a bench-mark method against which microscopical examination could be compared. The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with that of microscopical exami

Modern agriculture faces significant challenges in integrated pest management, where collecting, connecting, and processing monitoring data in real time are essential. This study presents the Brazilian Insect Survey (BIS), a web-based platform designed to centralize and streamline phytosanitary data management, enabling the integration of computer vision, field experimentation, and population modeling within a unified digital ecosystem. The platform is organized into functional modules that support experimental data management (TrapSystem and AgroExperiment), automated insect detection and cou

Bactrocera dorsalis is a major fruit and vegetable pest with limited effective attractants. Our previous work identified Melaleuca quinquenervia essential oil (MQEO) as a strong attractant. Guided by an olfactory transcriptome- and molecular docking-informed screening strategy inspired by reverse chemical ecology principles, we identified terpinen-4-ol (T4O) as the key active component. Laboratory assays showed that T4O strongly attracts sexually mature adults of both sexes, with enhanced responses in mated and resource-deprived flies. T4O also induces oviposition preference and increases shor

The European earwig F. auricularia L. is an omnivore that has only recently been identified as a direct, fruit-feeding pest of citrus. Here, we start to build the basic tools needed for integrated pest management for this species. We introduce a time-efficient sampling method based on small wooden boards placed on the ground, and we use them in a 2-yr survey of 93 commercial citrus blocks in California's San Joaquin Valley. Insecticides were not applied targeting F. auricularia in any of these citrus blocks. We find that F. auricularia populations are very low or undetectable in most blocks, w

BACKGROUND: Methyl salicylate (MeSa), a plant defense elicitor and whitefly deterrent, has been shown to reduce the settlement of the glasshouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) on host plants. This study aimed to evaluate the dispersal effect of MeSa on whiteflies settled on tomato plants and assess the efficacy of yellow sticky traps (YST) and green light-emitting diode (LED)-enhanced YST (green LED trap (GLT)) in recapturing dispersed whiteflies. These findings form the basis for developing a push-pull strategy to enhance whitefly control.
RESULTS: Initial experiments tested varying Me

Mosquitoes threaten over half of the world's population through vectored diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Mosquitoes have a highly developed olfactory system attuned to chemotaxis relating to host-seeking, mating, and oviposition behavior. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial efficacy of 2 plant-based repellent blends (Blend3 and Blend4 that had previously been found to successfully repel Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes in wind tunnel assays) in excluding Aedes aegypti from the window entry. A new cage system was developed for parallel "n

Systena frontalis (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious insect pest in nursery production. Insecticides are an important control tactic for S. frontalis adults to reduce economic losses associated with its injury. Because densities and activity of S. frontalis adults are influenced by many biotic (e.g., adult emergence timing) and abiotic (e.g., fluctuating temperatures) factors in the nurseries, it is challenging to reliably determine the efficacy and residual activity of insecticides under field conditions. Thus, the objective was to determine the residual activity of common a

In 2016, we conducted three experiments to clarify the effects of 2,3-hexanediols isomers on trap catches of Neoclytus acuminatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). We also noted the effects of the isomers on trap catches of other cerambycids and associated species of predators and competitors. Catches of N. acuminatus in traps baited with ethanol + syn-2,3-hexanediol + racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2-one were reduced with the addition of anti-2,3-hexanediol, an attractant for Curius dentatus Newman (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). A fourth experiment conducted in 2017 verified that racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2

BACKGROUND: Fruit growers largely depend on chemical control to reduce populations of the economically damaging invasive fly, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura). Drosophila suzukii is susceptible to high temperatures and low humidity; therefore, it may be possible to implement cultural control practices that create microclimates unfavorable for its development and survival. In addition to other fruit production benefits, in-row mulches may impede the development of D. suzukii immatures when larvae leave the fruit to pupate in the soil. This study compared the effects of different mulches (black po
