Screening of blood products and attention to stricter infection control measures in hemodialysis units have reduced the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among dialysis patients. Pulmonary complications of alpha interferon are rare. We report two cases of lung complications in liver transplantation patients for HCV related cirrhosis. After switching from interferon alpha to pegylated interferon alpha 2b, one patient developed a BOOP (Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia) and the other severe interstitial pneumonitis. We discuss the causes of these rare pulmonary alpha-interferon induced complications and the different way to suggest that the pegylated interferon alpha 2b could be related to the risk of pulmonary toxicity of this treatment.

DESIGN: A randomized placebo-controlled and double-blind study.

A giant multiseptate cystic mass covering the whole left hemitruncus of fetus was detected by ultrasonography at 23 weeks of gestation. Malignant melanoma is resected with curative intent in 80-85% of the patients. In case of tumor thickness according to Breslow of > 4 mm and metastatic regional lymph nodes a high relapse rate and mortality of 50-90% is observed. PURPOSE: Protein aggregates are thought to be involved in the immunogenicity of recombinant proteins in humans. To probe human IFN-alpha formulations for the presence of soluble protein aggregates, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were developed.

We herein report a case of chronic hepatitis C where the patient developed severe thrombocytopenia during interferon therapy. BACKGROUND: The improvement in ocular inflammation in patients with cyclosporine A resistant Behçet disease (CyA) during therapy of severe aphthosis with recombinant interferon-alpha 2b (IFN alpha) prompted its evaluation for treatment of refractory autoimmune uveitis.
METHOD: IFN alpha was used in 18 patients with posterior uveitis, nine with Behçet disease and nine with primary uveitis (mean evolution time 3.8 years) previously treated with corticosteroids (18), CyA (16) and azathioprine (1). The dose was 5 MU/day (4 weeks) and then twice weekly (12 weeks) maintaining the previous therapy.

Treatment of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) varies according to the severity of the condition, the patient's age and the phase of the disease. The mainstay of treatment is corticosteroid therapy, with splenectomy for non-responding patients. For the 5%-10% of patients with refractory disease and bleeding problems, intravenous immunoglobulins are often used. Danazol achieves a response in about 30%-40% of refractory patients.
