Navigating the challenging storms of cancer management in a national cancer centre: perspectives of female patients.

BACKGROUND: Breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers are among the top ten global cancers, affecting women, with age-standardized rates per 100,000 being 47.8 for breast, 13.3 for cervical, and 6.6 for ovarian cancer. The journey from cancer symptoms, through diagnosis and treatment, to survivorship, presents numerous challenges. These challenges encompass physical, psychological, and social aspects, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. It is crucial for research to explore not only the challenges faced by patients but also the strategies they employ to cope with these obstacles. M

What really matters? A mixed methods study of treatment preferences and priorities among people with epilepsy in the UK.

The widening range of treatment options for epilepsy, and their potential outcomes, mean decisions about treatment for people with epilepsy (PWE) are often complex. While antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) represent the mainstay of treatment, other potential nondrug interventions are gaining in importance. These treatments all have the potential for harming those using them, as well as bringing benefits. This study examined the views and experiences of PWE about a range of treatment options. We used both qualitative and quantitative approaches - a series of depth-narrative interviews, followed by a la

People with dementia living alone: what are their needs and what kind of support are they receiving?

BACKGROUND: In the U.K. about 141,460 people with dementia (PWD) live alone. They are at risk of social isolation and inadequate social and medical supervision. The aims of this study were to identify the needs of PWD living alone and to compare the needs of PWD living alone versus those living with others. It was predicted that PWD living alone would have significantly more unmet needs than those living with others. METHODS: 152 PWD were interviewed about their cognitive status and quality of life (QoL); and 128 informal carers were interviewed about the PWD's QoL, social networks, behaviora

Diagnosis of alcohol use disorder from a psychological point of view.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the most common psychiatric disease in the general population, characterized by having a pattern of excessive drinking despite the negative effects of alcohol on the individual’s work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social life. Currently, the bio-psycho-social model describes properly AUD as a multidimensional phenomenon including biological, psychological, and socio-cultural variables affecting the nature, maintenance, and expression of the disorder. The AUD diagnostic process is crucial since the treatment success depends heavily on the accuracy and

From "passive burden-bearing" to "active benefit-gaining": exploring the psychological growth paths of female caregivers of advanced lung cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the benefit-finding experiences of female caregivers of patients with lung cancer, focusing particularly on their positive psychological adaptations throughout the caregiving process. The findings are expected to inform the development of more targeted and effective nursing interventions. METHODS: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, with sample size determined by the principle of data saturation. From November to December 2024, 12 female caregivers of hospitalized lung cancer patients were purposively recruited from a tertiary hospital

Trauma, empowerment, and resilience: understanding the mental health concerns of people living with human immunodeficiency virus in Manitoba.

INTRODUCTION: Canada has endorsed the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) target to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. However, Canada has reported increases in HIV diagnoses for five consecutive years since 2019, with Manitoba's provincial rates three times the national average. This study examines mental health factors that may impact engagement in care among people living with HIV in Manitoba. METHODS: For this qualitative study, 32 Manitoban women, men and gender-diverse people living with HIV completed semi-structured interviews on barriers and facilitators to HIV care; as wel

Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder on adaptive functioning.

BACKGROUND: Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are associated with adaptive behavior deficits. This study examined the interaction between these 2 factors on parent ratings of adaptive behavior. METHODS: As part of a multisite study, primary caregivers of 317 children (8 to 16 years, M = 12.38) completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Second Edition (VABS-II). Four groups of subjects were included: children with prenatal alcohol exposure with ADHD (AE+, n = 82), children with prenatal alcohol exposure without ADHD (AE-, n = 34), children

A qualitative investigation of problem gambling as an escape-based coping strategy.

BACKGROUND: There has been a small but growing body, of largely quantitative research, that has examined problem gambling in the context of poor coping skills. These studies suggest that gambling may be used as an alternative method of coping that some will use to distract themselves from having to deal with problems in their lives. OBJECTIVES: To examine the role that gambling plays in the lives of problem gamblers and the extent to which it may be used as a means of coping. DESIGN: Fifty problem gamblers, ranging in age from 18 to 63 years, with an average age of 39 years, were interviewed

Ruminative coping with depressed mood following loss.

In a longitudinal study of 253 bereaved adults, people with poorer social support, more concurrent stressors, and higher levels of postloss depression reported more rumination than people with better social support, fewer stressors, and lower initial depression levels. Women reported more rumination than men. People with a ruminative style at 1 month were more likely to have a pessimistic outlook at 1 month, which was associated with higher depression levels at 6 months. People with a more ruminative style were more depressed at 6 months, even after controlling for initial depression levels, s

"I Wouldn't Even Know What to Ask for": Patients' and Caregivers' Experiences of Psychological Support for Huntington's Disease in Italy.

People with Huntington's disease (HD) often experience psychological difficulties linked with disease progression and the adjustment to living with a chronic condition, which are also frequently shared by their informal caregivers (e.g., partners). Although limited, the current literature on psychological care for people with HD shows that interventions have the potential to drive improvements in mental health and quality of life. However, the experience of accessing and receiving psychological support for HD remains unclear across several countries. This study adopted a qualitative design to

The psychological health and stress of pilots in a labor dispute.

This study investigated the psychological stress and psychiatric symptomatology in a representative sample of pilots involved in a labor dispute with management. Standardized epidemiological psychometric instruments revealed that one quarter of the pilots could be labelled "psychologically at risk" showing elevated symptoms of anger-hostility, paranoia, and obsessive-compulsiveness. A certain combination of personality scores with stress reactions was found to correctly classify pilots who were healthy vs. "at risk" with 92% accuracy. Interviews with pilots revealed both general causes of stre

Psychological Screening Indicates That 1 in 4 Children With Cleft Lip and Palate Require Psychological Support.

Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) often experience developmental issues, including language delay, learning difficulties, and attention issues. The aim of the study was to assess potential difficulties in children with CL/P and to determine the necessity of ongoing psychological support. Eighty-two children treated for CL/P, 29 5-year-olds and 53 10-year-olds, participated together with their parents in the study. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess difficulties and strengths. Proxy reports were used for the 5-year-olds, while self-reports and proxy

Promoting optimal functioning in spinal cord injury: the role of rehabilitation psychology.

Comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation includes attention to the psychological needs of individuals with SCI and their families. This chapter is designed to familiarize neurologists and other practitioners with psychological issues and care in SCI. While psychologists play a key role, attention to psychosocial health is a responsibility shared by all members of the rehabilitation team, beginning with the patient and family, and including clinicians who are not formally identified as mental health providers. Treatment planning for a person with SCI begins with a thorough assessment of the c
