BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) heterogeneity has been postulated, but the existence of benign summer light eruption (BSLE) is controversial. We studied the prevalence of the clinical patterns, criteria distinguishing BSLE from PLE, and diagnostic usefulness of phototest.

To determine the lineage of West Nile virus that caused outbreaks in Italy in 2008 and 2009, several West Nile virus strains were isolated from human specimens and sequenced. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses, the strains isolated constitute a distinct group within the western Mediterranean cluster.

BACKGROUND: this article summarises the results of eight years (2002-2009) of investigations on food borne disease outbreaks carried out the Regional Agency for Public Health in Piedmont, which is an Italian Region (4,432,571 citizens, 2008).
METHODS: the investigations were conducted as cohort studies supported by laboratory analysis of: food and patients. The data were reported by general practitioners and hospital physicians, and were collected, evaluated and recorded in 22 Hospitals.

After 10 years, West Nile virus (WNV) re-emerged in Italy in August 2008. As on 31 December 2008, the infection affected eight Provinces in three Regions (Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Lombardy), where a total of 794 cases of WNV infection in 251 equine stables were detected on the basis of the clinical signs and as a result of a serological screening in horses living in the area. We evaluated the impact of AIDS among older persons in Italy and compared these cases with cases among younger persons. The data source was Italy's National AIDS Registry. We considered adults diagnosed with AIDS between 1982 and 2005. Older adults were defined as those aged 50 years or older at diagnosis. Of the total adult cases, 8.8% were among older adults. This proportion increased over time, from 4.9% in 1982-1990 to 15.9% in 2000-2005. Five penicillinase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) were isolated from urethral specimens of men admitted to the "Santa Chiara" Hospital (Trento, Italy). All strains proved to be resistant to penicillin and ampicillin, and sensitive to cefuroxime, erythromycin, tetracycline, spectinomycin, nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin. Cryptococcus neoformans is the cause of the most common life-threatening fungal infection in patients with AIDS. Thirty strains of C. neoformans were collected from inpatients and typied evaluating activity, morphotyping, serotyping, chemosensitivity and adhesivity. Cryptococcus neoformans strains showed different aspectotype profile, the sole presence of serotypes A and D, good susceptibility to azoles and Amphotericin B. Phenotypic epidemiologic markers can be used: characterization of clinical strains excludes a common source.

An investigation about N. meningitidis carriers was carried out in Apulia (Italy) among teen-agers. 85 healthy carriers were identified (1.4%): the 81.2% of isolates resulted polyagglutinable, 3.5% autoagglutinable and 1.2% were not classifiable with antisera. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from children aged 3-5 years in central Italy who were attending day-care centres or hospital outpatient clinics.
