Saliva of laboratory-reared Lutzomyia longipalpis exacerbates Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis infection more potently than saliva of wild-caught Lutzomyia longipalpis.

In order to compare the saliva effect from wild-caught and lab-reared L. longipalpis on the development of experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis, C57BL/6 mice were inoculated subcutaneously into the hind footpads with promastigotes of L. (L.) amazonensis plus salivary gland lysate from wild-caught (SGL-W) and lab-colonized (SGL-C) vectors. Lesion sizes were significantly larger in the mice infected with both saliva compared to mice infected with parasites alone; moreover, the lesions caused by parasite+SGL-C were significantly larger than the lesions caused by parasite+SGL-W. Histopathological

Differences in clinical and laboratory characteristics and disease severity between children and adults with dengue virus infection in Taiwan, 2002.

To compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics and disease severity between adults and children with dengue in Taiwan in 2002, we retrospectively studied 661 serologically confirmed dengue-infected patients (606 adults and 55 children) admitted between June and December 2002 to a single medical centre. The medical charts of the patients were reviewed for demographic, clinical, laboratory and imaging information. Compared with children, adult patients were found to have: higher incidences of arthralgia (P<0.001), myalgia (P=0.002), headache (P=0.028), abdominal pain (P=0.004) and upper

Antibodies against a secreted protein from hookworm larvae reduce the intensity of hookworm infection in humans and vaccinated laboratory animals.

The development of a vaccine would provide an important new tool for the control of human hookworm infection. On the basis of successful vaccination of laboratory animals with living irradiated, third-stage hookworm larvae (L3), we examined the antibody responses of individuals from hookworm endemic areas of Brazil and China against the most abundant L3 secreted antigens, the ancylostoma secreted proteins, ASP-1 and ASP-2. Logistic regression was used to investigate the effects of antibody isotype responses to ASPs on the risk of an individual harboring heavy hookworm infection. A significant

Cryptococcal infections of the central nervous system: an analysis of predisposing factors, laboratory findings and outcome in patients from South India with special reference to HIV infection.

The incidence of cryptococcosis in patients with AIDS is significant. Predisposing factors, laboratory findings and outcome were assessed in 60 patients with cryptococcal infections of the central nervous system over a 17.5-year period (Jan. 1978-June 1995). Predisposing factors for cryptococcal infection were identified in 36 patients, with HIV infection being the commonest (18). Cryptococcal cultures were positive in all patients. India ink staining was positive in 48 patients and cryptococcal antigen was detected in 35 of 36 patients tested. Comparison of clinical and laboratory parameters

Transmission dynamics of an insect-specific flavivirus in a naturally infected Culex pipiens laboratory colony and effects of co-infection on vector competence for West Nile virus.

We established a laboratory colony of Culex pipiens mosquitoes from eggs collected in Colorado and discovered that mosquitoes in the colony are naturally infected with Culex flavivirus (CxFV), an insect-specific flavivirus. In this study we examined transmission dynamics of CxFV and effects of persistent CxFV infection on vector competence for West Nile virus (WNV). We found that vertical transmission is the primary mechanism for persistence of CxFV in Cx. pipiens, with venereal transmission potentially playing a minor role. Vector competence experiments indicated possible early suppression of

Clustered cases of Candida auris colonization: Roles of the infection prevention and control department and the mycology laboratory in controlling transmission.

Candida auris is an emerging yeast that is responsible for outbreaks via nosocomial transmission. This study describes two cases of C. auris colonization, with confirmed interhospital transmission in the absence of travel history for the index case, although multiple risk factors were present. The role of the infection prevention and control department is essential in implementing barrier measures to limit yeast transmission, whereas the mycology laboratory plays a crucial role in the rapid and effective detection of potential contact cases, as well as environmental contamination.

Microbiology Laboratory Testing Practices of Gram-Negative Bloodstream Infections With Difficult-to-Treat Resistant Phenotypes in US Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Rapid administration of effective antimicrobial therapy is crucial for managing bloodstream infections (BSIs), especially those caused by pathogens with difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR; ie, resistance to all first-line antimicrobials). The purpose of this study is to describe the epidemiology and time course of microbiological testing in US laboratories for gram-negative BSIs (GN-BSIs). METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study of adults with GN-BSI between 1 January 2017 and 30 June 2023 was conducted using a large, geographically diverse, hospital-based administrati

Early prediction of bloodstream infections in ICU patients using machine learning methods based on routine laboratory parameters.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Although blood cultures remain the diagnostic gold standard, their long turnaround time may hinder early risk warning. Early risk stratification using routinely available laboratory data may facilitate prompt clinical intervention. This study aimed to develop and validate machine learning (ML) models to predict the likelihood of BSIs in ICU patients based on laboratory tests obtained within the first 24 h of admission. METHODS: This was a retrospective, two-center cohort study

Attractiveness of Golden Hamster infected with Leishmania amazonensis (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) to laboratory-reared Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the primary vector of Leishmania infantum in the Americas and a permissive vector for Leishmania amazonensis. Previous studies showed that Leishmania infantum-infected hosts can release different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared with uninfected hosts, presenting a higher attractiveness to vectors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a possible effect of L. amazonensis infection of golden hamsters in three parameters: attractiveness to Lu. longipalpis females; blood volume ingested by sand fly females; and VOCs released by the animals.. Attractiveness was meas

Multidrug-Resistant Micro-Organisms Associated with Urinary Tract Infections in Orthopedic Patients: A Retrospective Laboratory-Based Study.

The risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in surgical wards remains closely related to the type of surgery and procedures performed on patients. Those factors also condition the risk of various forms of clinical infections, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs are most frequently (70-80% of cases) caused by the use of bladder catheter in the perioperative period. The aim of this study was to perform an epidemiological and microbiological analysis of UTIs in orthopedic patients, with an emphasis on multidrug-resistant (MDR) micro-organisms. Methods: The study was conducted

A Retrospective Review of Medical Records of Laboratory-Tested Sexually Transmitted Infections of Transsexual Men from Southern Brazil.

The present study assessed the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 90 transsexual men (female-to-male transsexual persons) from southern Brazil. A retrospective review of the medical records of all transsexual men who visited an outpatient clinic in Rio Grande do Sul from 1998 to 2017 was performed. Although the sample had a high prevalence of risk factors for contracting STIs, such as drug use, one-third of the participants had never been tested for STIs and, when screened, it was mostly for HIV, but not for syphilis or other STIs. Based only on laboratory-tested transsexu
