Craticula vanensis sp. nov., a new species of diatom with a complex mitogenome, inhabiting soda lakes in central Europe and Anatolia.

This article formally describes Craticula vanensis sp. nov., a new species of diatom from Lake Van, the largest soda lake in the world, and the fifth new species identified in the lake following an 81-years gap in investigations. A genomic approach based on short reads allowed the complete cluster of nuclear rRNA genes to be retrieved alongside the complete plastome, both later used in several single or multigene phylogenies, which surprisingly tended to associate C. vanensis to species of the genus Dorofeyukea. The complex structure of the mitogenome could only be resolved by long-read sequen

Spatial and temporal variation of suspect screening derived cyanobacterial secondary metabolite mixtures during harmful algal bloom events in shallow agroecosystem lakes.

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose significant health risks to communities through drinking water sources and contact recreation. C … ening to characterize cyanometabolite mixture dynamics during active HAB events in two Eastern Iowa lakes as test sites, using time controlled sampling at one lake and locationally controlled sampling at the other. Using the CyanoMetDB to enable complex mixture comparisons alongside ELISA-based microcystin (MC) quantification, we tentatively identified …

Detection and monitoring of water hyacinth in large lakes of five Indian urban agglomerates using Sentinel-2 and machine learning models.

Rapid urbanisation has intensified ecological pressures on urban lakes, promoting the spread of invasive aquatic macrophytes such as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). This study presents a multi-year, satellite-based framework for detecting and monitoring water hyacinth in urban lakes using Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery and supervised machine learning. Four classifiers (Support Vector Machine, XGBoost, Random Forest, and K-Nearest Neighbours) were evaluated using classification-based accuracy metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Cohen's kappa, and cross-validation …

Methanotrophs and co-occurring microbial taxa: Genomic potential for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in newly formed high-altitude proglacial lakes.

The extreme and fragile environments of high-altitude proglacial lakes shape unique microbial communities and metabolic networks, serving as active interfaces in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). However, the metabolic processes underlying microbially driven biogeochemical cycling in these lakes remain poorly understood. In this study, by integrating field investigations and isotopic analyses across multiple seasons, we observed geochemical and genomic evidence consistent with significant microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in the surface sediments of cryo-ol…

Paired water-sediment DOM optical fingerprints reveal sediment-side signals of apparent potentially toxic element partitioning in coal-mining subsidence lakes.

Coal-mining subsidence lakes contain active sediment-water interfaces, where surface sediments can influence the apparent partitioning and potential secondary mobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences metal speciation and transport, but sediment-side organic-matter signals remain underrepresented in monitoring based on overlying-water chemistry or bulk sediment inventories. Here, we evaluated a paired water-sediment DOM optical screening approach integrating ultraviolet-visible absorbance, fluorescence indices, EEM-PARAFAC components, sediment…

Cyanobacterial blooms increase the release of vanadium through iron reduction and dissolved organic matter complexation in the sediment of eutrophic lakes.

Vanadium (V), a hazardous environmental contaminant, can be highly toxic to aquatic or even human life. Nonetheless, knowledge of its redox geochemistry and mobility in sediments, especially those of eutrophic lakes, remains limited. In this study, we combined in situ high-resolution sampling and laboratory simulation experiments for monitoring soluble and labile V to reveal the mobilization mechanism of V in the sediment of Lake Taihu. The results showed that the concentration of soluble V (1.18-5.22 µg L-1) exceeded the long-term ecotoxicology limitation proposed by the government of the Net…

A novel schistosome species hosted by Planorbella (Helisoma) trivolvis is the most widespread swimmer's itch-causing parasite in Michigan inland lakes.

Cercarial dermatitis (‘swimmer's itch’; SI), characterized by small itchy bumps caused by schistosome parasites of birds and mammals, is a common problem in Michigan. Research on avian schistosomes began nearly 100 years ago in Michigan inland lakes, yet scientists are still uncovering basic biological information including the identification of local snail and parasite species that cause SI. Previous research primarily focused on lakes in the northern half of Michigan's lower peninsula, although SI occurs throughout the state. We surveyed snails and snail-borne trematodes in lakes across Mich…

Influence of sediment resuspension on the efficacy of geoengineering materials in the control of internal phosphorous loading from shallow eutrophic lakes.

Modified clay-based solid-phase phosphorous (P) sorbents are increasingly used as lake geoengineering materials for lake eutrophication control. However, some still dispute the feasibility of using these materials to control internal P loading from shallow eutrophic lakes. The lack of information about P behavior while undergoing frequent sediment resuspension greatly inhibits the modified minerals' use. In this study, a sediment resuspension generating system was used to simulate the effect of both moderate winds (5.1 m/s) and strong winds (8.7 m/s) on the stability of sediment treated by two…

Factors Affecting Elevated Arsenic and Methyl Mercury Concentrations in Small Shield Lakes Surrounding Gold Mines near the Yellowknife, NT, (Canada) Region.

Gold mines in the Yellowknife, NT, region--in particular, the Giant Mine--operated from 1949-99, releasing 237,000 tonnes of waste arsenic trioxide (As2O3) dust, among other compounds, from gold ore extraction and roasting processes. For the first time, we show the geospatial distribution of roaster-derived emissions of several chemical species beyond the mine property on otherwise undisturbed taiga shield lakes within a 25 km radius of the mine, 11 years after its closing. Additionally, we demonstrate that underlying bedrock is not a significant source for the elevated concentrations in overl…

Influence of dissolved organic matter character on mercury incorporation by planktonic organisms: an experimental study using oligotrophic water from Patagonian lakes.

Ligands present in dissolved organic matter (DOM) form complexes with inorganic divalent mercury (Hg2+) affecting its bioavailability in pelagic food webs. This investigation addresses the influence of a natural gradient of DOM present in Patagonian lakes on the bioaccumulation of Hg2+ (the prevailing mercury species in the water column of these lakes) by the algae Cryptomonas erosa and the zooplankters Brachionus calyciflorus and Boeckella antiqua. Hg2+ accumulation was studied through laboratory experiments using natural water of four oligotrophic Patagonian lakes amended witht'97Hg2+. The b…

Dietary and tissue residue analysis and contaminant intake estimations in rats consuming diets composed of Great Lakes salmon: a multigeneration study.

To further characterize the toxicological risk associated with chemical contaminants in Great Lakes fish, a multigeneration rat reproduction study was designed. Mature chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tsawytscha), collected during the Fall 1991 spawning runs from Sydenham River, Lake Huron, and Credit River, Lake Ontario, were filleted, lyophilized, and incorporated into standard rat diets at 25% (w/w) or 100% (w/w) of the normal protein compliment [casein, 20% (w/w)]. This resulted in diets composed of 5 or 20% (w/w) lyophilized fish and estimated daily fish intakes by the rats at levels approxim…

Underexplored diversity of gill monogeneans in cichlids from Lake Tanganyika: eight new species of Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from the northern basin of the lake, with remarks on the vagina and the heel of the male copulatory organ.

BACKGROUND: Lake Tanganyika harbours the most diverse cichlid assemblage of the Great African Lakes. Considering its cichlid flocks consist of approximately 250 endemic species, we can hypothesize a high species-richness in their often quite host-specific monogenean ectoparasites belonging to Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960. Yet, only 24 species were described from Tanganyikan hosts and some host tribes have never been investigated for monogeneans. This study presents the first parasitological examination of species of the tribes Cyprichromini (Cyprichromis microlepidotus (Poll, 1956)), Eretmodini…

Harnessing Alpine Lake Bacteria for the Development of Synthetic Communities with Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Activity.

In aquatic ecosystems, phagotrophic protists and bacteriophages are major biological factors shaping bacterial populations. However, the extreme environmental conditions and low nutrient concentrations in alpine lakes limit the abundance of protists. Thus, bacteriophages may represent the main biological factor shaping bacterial communities in these ecosystems. We hypothesized that alpine lake bacteria populations harbor diverse antiviral strategies against bacteriophages that could be used to fight against other viral pathogens. To evaluate the presence of bacteria with broad-spectrum antivir…

Comprehensive Screening and Environmental Fate of Chlorinated Paraffins and Their Structural Analogs in a Freshwater Lake Ecosystem.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are emerging persistent organic pollutants whose large-scale production and application have led to their widespread environmental occurrence. However, the occurrence and environmental fate of CPs and their structural analogs (CPSAs) remain largely unknown in lake systems. In this study, paired water and sediment samples from Lake Taihu were comprehensively screened for CPs and CPSAs using Ph4PCl-enhanced ionization coupled with UPLC-Orbitrap-MS. A total of 139 CP congeners (28 SCCPs, 22 MCCPs, 89 LCCPs) and 217 CPSAs (14 very short-chain CPs (vSCCPs), 51 unsaturate

[Effects of enclosure aquaculture of hairy crab on CO2 and CH4 emission in Yangcheng Lake wetland].

Enclosed aquaculture of hairy crab is an important intensive aquaculture model in freshwater lakes of China. However, there remains a lack of systematic understanding regarding its impact on greenhouse gas emissions and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the effects of enclosed aquaculture on CO2 and CH4 concentration, diffusion flux and the key regulatory factors by field observation in Yangcheng Lake during the breeding and non-breeding periods, combined with headspace equilibrium gas chromatography method and molecular biological technique. The results showed that Yan…
