Chronic Larva Currens Following Tourist Travel to the Gambia and Southeast Asia Over 20 Years Ago.

Larva currens is the cutaneous manifestation of human infection with the geotropic helminth Strongyloides stercoralis. Strongyloidiasis is a lifelong infection unless treated. A high index of suspicion is needed to prevent chronic symptoms of strongyloidiasis (eg, larva currens, eosinophilia, abdominal discomfort) and to prevent fatal dissemination. We present a case of chronic larva currens following tourist travel to the Gambia and Southeast Asia>20 years ago. This case highlights several important features of larva currens and strongyloidiasis, including the chronicity of symptoms, the rapi…

Incidence of Ascaris suum-specific antibodies in Austrian patients with suspected larva migrans visceralis (VLM) syndrome.

The pig roundworm, Ascaris suum, is commonly found in domestic pigs all over the world. The transmission to humans takes place by ingestion of infective A. suum eggs present in soil because pig manure is widely used as fertilizer. The possible role of A. suum in the human visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome has been discussed controversially during past decades, even though various case reports, particularly from Japan document pulmonal, hepatic and even cerebral symptoms caused by migrating A. suum larvae after ingestion of infected row meat (liver) or contaminated vegetables. We examined 4…

Löffler syndrome caused by extensive cutaneous larva migrans: a case report and review of the literature.

In rare cases, cutaneous larva migrans may be complicated by Löffler syndrome. This syndrome is thought to result from a type I hypersensitivity reaction related to the pulmonary larval migration phase of various parasites. It is characterized by migratory pulmonary eosinophilic infiltrates and peripheral eosinophilia, with malaise, fever, and cough. Our patient was successfully treated with ivermectin, a corticosteroid cream, and inhalation medication in an early phase, which prevented complications. We present the details of this case and review the literature.

Prevalence and risk factors of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in a rural community in Brazil.

The epidemiology of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) in endemic communities is not well understood. To describe the prevalence of HrCLM and to identify environmental and behavioural risk factors for the infestation, two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in a small village in an endemic area of north-eastern Brazil - one in the rainy season and the other in the dry season. The members of each household were examined clinically for the presence of HrCLM, and information on possible risk factors was collected. HrCLM, which was diagnosed in 45 individuals in the rainy-season s…

Hepatic visceral larva migrans: evolution of the lesion, diagnosis, and role of high-dose albendazole therapy.

An unusual presentation of hepatic involvement of visceral larva migrans is described. A 45-yr-old male presented with fever, pain in the right upper quadrant, and persistent eosinophilia. Ultrasound initially detected a solitary hypoechoic area in the right lobe of the liver which rapidly progressed to multiple lesions with peripheral hyperechoic lesions. Aspiration from the lesion revealed Charcot-Leyden crystals and sheets of eosinophils. Serology for Toxocara canis was strongly positive. Prolonged and high-dose albendazole therapy, in combination with antibiotics, was required to treat the…

Fine structure and blood-brain barrier properties of the central nervous system of a dipteran larva.

Using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, we studied basic ultrastructure, membrane specializations, and blood-brain barrier properties of the ventral ganglion and abdominal nerves of the last (third) instar larva of a dipteran fly, Delia platura. Both ganglion and nerves are covered with a non-cellular neural lamella. A monolayer of flattened perineurial cells lies beneath the neural lamella. Perineurial cells contain stores of metabolites and nutrients and these cells extensively interdigitate with one another. An extensive extracellular series of channels pervades perineurial cel…

[Horse infestation with the larva of the deer warble fly, Hypoderma diana Brauer, 1985 (Diptera, Hypodermatidae)].

In South Bohemia a case was discovered of a yearling colt attacked by the larva of the IIIrd instar of the deer warble fly Hypoderma diana Brauer. The dead, almost mature larva of the fly was squeezed out of a subcutaneous lump above the shoulder in the first decade of April, 1985. The case is evaluated from the point of view of the possibility of the transition of specific parasites--warble flies--to another host. The attacking of a non-specific kind can occasionally occur only when there is a large number of the parasites and both kinds of host. At present the degree of attacking of deer by …

Visceral larva migrans: Immunoglobulins, precipitating antibodies and detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against Ascaris antigen.

Serum samples from ten children with visceral larva migrans were evaluated by analysis of: immunoglobulin concentrations, precipitin reactions against Toxocara and Ascaris antigens and blood group substances, and IgM and IgG activity against Ascaris antigen by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The elevated concentrations of serum IgE and IgG and the positive precipitin reactions which occurred in some cases are an aid in diagnosis but were not consistently present. Serum IgM concentrations were elevated in all cases. IgM or IgG antibodies against Ascaris suum antigen were detected in all cases by a soli…

Radiolabeling of infective third-stage larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis by feeding [75 Se]selenomethionine-labeled Escherichia coli to first- and second-stage larvae.

A technique is described for radiolabeling Strongyloides stercoralis larvae with [75Se]selenomethionine. Cultures of an auxotrophic methionine-dependent stain of Escherichia coli were grown in a medium containing Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium supplemented with 5% nutrient broth, amino acids, and [75Se]selenomethionine. When the 75Se-labeled bacterial populations were in the stationary phase of growth, cultures were harvested and the bacteria dispersed on agar plates to serve as food for S. stercoralis larvae. Use of nondividing bacteria is important for successful labeling because the iso…

Protective immunity induced by irradiated third-stage larvae of the filaria Acanthocheilonema viteae is directed against challenge third-stage larvae before molting.

Jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were vaccinated with irradiated L3 third-stage larvae (L3) of Acanthocheilonema viteae, and the time required for killing of the challenge L3 was determined. The number of parasites recovered from vaccinated jirds was reduced to about 10% of the control values on the second day after challenge infection and later on. Histological studies revealed an eosinophil-rich infiltrate containing macrophages, neutrophils, and mast cells in the vicinity of the L3 on day 2 after challenge and destruction of the worms by day 4 after challenge. Ultrastructural studies confirmed…

Dyella stictolepturae sp. nov., isolated from the larva gut of red-brown longhorn beetle (Stictoleptura succedanea).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 20L07T, was isolated from the gut of a larva of the red-brown longhorn beetle (Stictoleptura succedanea). The isolate was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Growth of strain 20L07T occurred at 10-30 °C (optimum, 20-25 °C), pH 4-9 (optimum, pH 7), and in the presence of 0-3% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0%). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain 20L07T belongs to the genus Dyella, showing the highest sequence similarity with Dyella silvatica RBB189T (98.8%), D. soli J…

Housefly Larva Vermicomposting Efficiently Attenuates Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Swine Manure, with Concomitant Bacterial Population Changes.

Manure from swine treated with antimicrobials as feed additives is a major source for the expansion of the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) reservoir in the environment. Vermicomposting via housefly larvae (Musca domestica) can be efficiently used to treat manure and regenerate biofertilizer, but few studies have investigated its effect on ARG attenuation. Here, we tracked the abundances of 9 ARGs and the composition and structure of the bacterial communities in manure samples across 6 days of full-scale manure vermicomposting. On day 6, the abundances of genes encoding tetracycline resistance…

The surface carbohydrates of the Echinococcus granulosus larva interact selectively with the rodent Kupffer cell receptor.

The larvae of the cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus dwell primarily in mammalian liver. They are protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular mucin-based structure. The glycans decorating these mucins constitute the overwhelming majority of molecules exposed by these larvae to their hosts. However, their decoding by host innate immunity has not been studied. Out of 36 mammalian innate receptors with carbohydrate-binding domains, expressed as Fc fusions, only the mouse Kupffer cell receptor (KCR; CLEC4F) bound significantly to the Echinococcus granulosus LL mucins. The recepto…

Pineapple juice for digestion of swamp eel viscera for harvesting infective-stage larva of Gnathostoma spp.

Third-stage larvae were used as antigen in the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis in Western blot analysis. Normally, the larvae were obtained from digestion of eel's liver (Fluta alba) by the enzyme pepsin. We used pineapple juice (Ananus comosus) instead of enzyme pepsin in harvesting Gnathostoma spinigerum third-stage larvae. The difference in recovered larvae numbers, between pineapple juice and pepsin, were not statistically significantly different (p>0.05). The larvae from pepsin and pineapple juice digestion were cultivated on BME for 7 days; the survival rates were not significantly differen…
