The pathology associated with the early migratory phase of infection by the sparganum larvae of Spirometra theileri (Baer, 1925) Opuni and Muller, 1974 (Pseudophyllidea:Diphyllobothriidae), has been investigated in TO strain mice and in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). All infected mice developed haemorrhagic skin lesions and oedema of the joints and often ascites and peritonitis 3-6 weeks after infection. There was a 25% mortality in mice given plerocercoids orally, 37.5% in those injected with procercoids intraperitoneally. From eight weeks after infection larvae in both mice and monkeys wer

Human toxocariasis is caused by the nematode, Toxocara canis and it is a poorly understood phenomenon in Nigeria. Seroepidemiological studie … e predominant risk factor. It indicates high transmission with the consequent of visceral or ocular larva migrans and neurologic disorder in these children. The results also provide baseline data for effective prevention strategies of toxocariasis in Southwest Nigeria and the study recommends prompt interventional measures, particularly health education on pers …

It is widely accepted that the major cause of visceral larva migrans (VLM) in man is Toxocara canis infection. This has been largely based on the detection of antibodies to this species. We have compared the antigens of T. canis and Toxocara cati in order to establish whether assay for the former might be compromised by infection with the latter. Comparisons were made by radioiodination of the surface and excretory/secretory (ES) glycoproteins of the infective larvae of both species, immunoprecipitation with poly- and monoclonal reagents, and SDS-PAGE. The SDS-PAGE profiles of surface antigens…

Strongyloidiasis is a nematode infection that can persist asymptomatically for years. Pathognomonic skin manifestation is the larva currens. A human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient native from an endemic area presented with pruritus, an urticarial serpiginous rash and eosinophilia. The histology was not helpful. Strongyloidiasis was confirmed on the basis of stool and serum examination. He was treated successfully with Ivermectin.

Parasitic diseases caused by helminths, or worms, account for billions of human infections worldwide. Although most human pathogens caused by these organisms are infrequent in the United States, skin manifestations of parasitic diseases are being seen much more frequently in dermatologists' offices due to the increase in immigration and travel. Helminths are notable for their complicated lifecycles often including consecutive developmental phases, in separate hosts or in a free-living state. These parasitic organisms are usually macroscopic, multicellular organisms, and do not breed within the

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, an intestinal nematode, which is mainly endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. It can be sporadically found in the temperate zone, especially in closed communities and among people living under bad social conditions. Gastrointestinal, pulmonary and cutaneous symptoms may arise during the migration of the larvae. The infections are chronic and poor in symptoms among immunocompetent patients. Sometimes the cutaneous manifestation is the only symptom of the disease besides the distinct eosinophilia. Intense itchin

Two cases of myiasis are presented. The first one, a furunculoid lesion, was caused by Dermatobia hominis; the second was a relapsing creeping disease.

Although Toxocara canis, an important pathogen of ocular disease, tends to migrate to the eye, the precise migratory route has yet to be determined experimentally. Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, known as a useful animal model for human toxocariasis, were used to investigate the migration route toward the eyes. Infective larvae of T. canis were directly inoculated into the intracranial region. Haemorrhagic lesions or larvae were observed in 56.3% of cases. Histopathologically, a larva was observed in the optic nerve of gerbils 6 days after inoculation, and two larvae were found in th

The relationship between epilepsy and the presence of visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis in Mexican children remains uncertain; however, this relationship needs to be elucidated because these parasite larvae can invade the human central nervous system. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine the frequency and specificity of anti-T. canis antibodies in the sera of children with epilepsy to determine the relationship between this parasite and epilepsy. The sera samples of 214 children were examined: 111 children diagnosed with epilepsy and 103 clinically healthy children without …

Ascaris suum larval excretory-secretory (AsES) antigen and larval (AsLA) as well as adult somatic antigen (AsAA) which were thought to be possibly helpful in the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM) due to A. suum infection were investigated in the present study. Serum taken from mice orally inoculated with approximately 250 embryonated eggs of A. suum or Toxocara canis, or 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the AsES antigen, AsLA or AsAA at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks post infection (WPI). The titer of serum…
