Leukemia is a clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. The four broad subtypes most likely to be encountered by primary care physicians are acute lymphoblastic, acute myelogenous, chronic lymphocytic, and chronic myelogenous. Legionnaires' disease is a rare cause of community acquired pneumonia in children and is exceedingly rare in infants and neonates. BACKGROUND: The HLXB9 gene encodes a homeodomain containing transcription factor which has been implicated in the development of both solid and hematological malignancies. In leukemia it is one of the two fused genes, along with ETV6, in a recurrent translocation frequently observed in infant AML.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcome of children with acute leukemias at a university hospital in Singapore. Between January 1988 and January 1994, 66 children were treated, comprising 13 cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 53 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) was computed according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The results showed that the survival of AML was poor, with a 2-year DFS of only 30%.
