BACKGROUND: Few studies have been published on the association between mental disorders and violence based on general population studies. Here we focus on different types of violence, adjusting for violent victimization and taking account of the limitations of previous population studies.
METHOD: Data were used from the first two waves of the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2 (NEMESIS-2), a nationally representative face-to-face survey of the general population aged 18-64 years (n = 6646). Violence was differentiated into physical and psychological violence against intima

BACKGROUND: young parenthood continues to be an issue of concern in terms of clinical and psychosocial outcomes for mothers and their babies, with higher rates of medical complications such as preterm labour and hypertensive disease and a higher risk of depression. The aim of this study was to investigate how young age impacts on women's experience of intrapartum care.
METHODS: secondary analysis of data collected in a population based survey of women who had recently given birth in Queensland, comparing clinical and interpersonal aspects of the intrapartum maternity care experience for 237 e

BACKGROUND: Research in adults suggests that intrusive memories are not just found in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet there is little evidence concerning the phenomenology of intrusive memories in children and adolescents. The present study investigated the frequency of intrusive memories following a recent negative event in an adolescent school sample, and considered the application of cognitive theory to understanding the maintenance of intrusive memories of recent negative events, and their role in maintaining depression.
METHODS: High school students (aged 11-1

BACKGROUND: Sickness absence in the Norwegian workplace doubled in the period 1993-2003. However, the extent to which the driving factors were medical or non-medical remains unclear, as does the extent to which the cause may be found in the composition of the workforce.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A differences-in-differences regression model was used to estimate the added sickness absence associated with major life events such as separation, death of spouse and pregnancy in the period 1993-2005. The data were obtained from administrative registers covering the entire Norwegian population, and incl

BACKGROUND: Siblings of pediatric cancer patients have a higher risk of developing emotional, behavioral, and social problems. However, little is known about specific experiences of this population in the first time after diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of siblings of pediatric cancer patients in different areas of life in the first half-year after the cancer diagnosis.
METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 7 siblings of pediatric cancer patients (ages 11-18 years). Siblings were asked about their experiences in the

OBJECTIVE: To examine prospectively the natural course of bulimia nervosa (BN) and eating disorder not-otherwise-specified (EDNOS) and test for the effects of stressful life events (SLE) on relapse after remission from these eating disorders.
METHOD: 117 female patients with BN (N = 35) or EDNOS (N = 82) were prospectively followed for 72 months using structured interviews performed at baseline, 6- and 12-months, and then yearly thereafter. ED were assessed with the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV, and monitored over time with the longitudinal interval follow-up evaluation. Personali

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Following stressful events, there is evidence that the degree to which the event is perceived as central to one's identity and forms a reference point for the attribution of meaning to other events (i.e., "centrality of events") is associated with depression symptoms. However, these findings have primarily come from cross-sectional studies of undergraduate samples, and no past study has investigated whether centrality predicts depression over time. We sought to further examine the role of centrality of negative autobiographical events that were the content of intrusi

The brooding and reflection forms of rumination were examined as mediators of the concurrent relationship between the impact of negative life events (INE), symptoms of depression, and suicidal ideation. An ethnically diverse sample of college undergraduates (N = 1,011) completed measures of negative life events and rumination, and they reported on their symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation. Brooding, but not reflection, partially mediated the INE-ideation relationship. Depression symptoms partially mediated the relationship between INE and suicidal ideation and between brooding and ide

Stressful life events and experiences may disrupt the typical day-to-day interactions between sisters and brothers that provide the foundation of sibling socialization. This chapter examines four experiences that may affect patterns of sibling interaction: parental marital conflict, parental divorce and remarriage, foster care placement, and a sibling's developmental disability. We propose a model to guide future research on sibling socialization in distressed families and special populations in which qualities of the sibling relationship moderate the effects of stressful life experiences on c

OBJECTIVE: To describe the experiences of adolescents who underwent organ transplantation.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies that explored the experiences of adolescents who underwent organ transplantation. We searched 5 electronic databases (to week 3 of July 2008) and reference lists of relevant articles.
RESULTS: Eighteen articles reporting the experiences of 313 adolescent organ transplant recipients were included. Five major themes were identified: (1) redefining identity (seeking normality, anxiety and disappointment, adopting a positive attitude, de

BACKGROUND: There is preliminary evidence to suggest an impact of stress on chances of achieving a pregnancy with in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The majority of the available research has focused on stress related to infertility and going through IVF-treatment, and it is still unclear whether non-fertility-related, naturally occurring stressors may influence IVF pregnancy chances. Our aim was to explore the association between IVF-outcome and negative, i.e. stressful, life-events during the previous 12 months.
METHODS: Prior to IVF, 809 women (mean age: 31.2 years) completed the List of Recent

Physiological theories may be important in the development and maintenance of social phobia in youth. A limited literature base indicates that youth with social phobia experience increases in objective physiological arousal during social-evaluative situations and are more aware of such increases compared to nonanxious youth. Recent research suggests that youth with social phobia also evidence heightened levels of anxiety sensitivity, which may lead to interpretation of physiological arousal as dangerous or distressing, and, as a result, in avoidance of situations which produce increased physio

This study aimed at the investigation of psychosocial and psychiatric risk factors of adolescent suicide by means of a case-control psychological autopsy study. Relatives and other informants of 19 suicide victims and 19 matched psychiatric controls were interviewed by means of a semi-structured interview schedule. Psychiatric controls included adolescents, individually matched according to gender, age and time between interview and suicide/admission, who had been admitted to a Psychiatric Department with suicidal ideation or attempted suicide at admission. Results showed that suicide victims

Gerontological literature utilizes the life stress paradigm to understand the impact of stress on psychological well-being, as well as the protective role that social resources play in buffering those effects; however these relationships are not well understood within various historical and social contexts. Utilizing a sample of 490 community-residing older adults in post-civil war Lebanon, this study investigates the moderating role of various social support factors in the stress-depression relationship. Contrary to expectations, results suggest that older Lebanese are more susceptible to the

This study examined ethical concerns related to exposing participants with childhood victimization histories to both trauma-specific and non-trauma-specific stimuli. We asked participants questions about childhood victimization experiences and exposed participants to a negatively-arousing experimental condition. Following each of these procedures and at a one-week follow-up session, participants completed a measure designed to asses their reactions to participation. The measure included several questions to assess reactions including questions about distress, benefit, and willingness to partic

BACKGROUND: In the United States, depression is approximately twice as common among women as among men, across all age groups.
OBJECTIVE: This review examines gender differences in the epidemiology and clinical presentation of depression, and explores whether women respond differently than men to antidepressant medications.
METHODS: This is a selective review focusing on current issues in the management of depression, with particular attention to gender differences in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease.
RESULTS: Women are more likely than men to have atypical symptoms

OBJECTIVE: To assess the evolution of idiopathic headache with early onset and to investigate the influence of early somatic disorders, "life events," and psychiatric disorders on the onset and the course of headache. We also studied the possible prognostic role of gender, headache diagnosis at onset, and history of headache in family members on the course of headache. We also investigated the applicability of the ICHD-II criteria to idiopathic headache in preschool children.
METHODS: Prospective evaluation of 25 consecutive headache patients referred before the age of 6 years. Headache diagn
