Simulation and inference methods for non-Markovian stochastic reaction networks.

Stochastic models of reaction networks are widely used to capture intrinsic noise in complex systems in the life sciences. Typical formulations of these models are based on Markov processes for which there is extensive research on efficient simulation and inference. However, there are complex processes in biology, such as gene transcription and translation, that introduce history dependent dynamics requiring non-Markovian processes to accurately capture the stochastic dynamics of the system. This greater realism comes with additional computational challenges for simulation and parameter infere

Integrated arts engagement as preventive infrastructure for active and healthy aging: a conceptual and policy framework.

Population aging is changing the work of public health. Longer lives require not only medical treatment, but also support for functional ability, social connection, meaning, participation, and everyday wellbeing. Arts engagement is increasingly discussed in relation to health, yet arts activities often remain treated as cultural or recreational provision rather than as part of preventive public health systems. This conceptual article develops the idea of integrated community arts engagement as a framework for understanding how arts participation can contribute to healthy aging. The framework d

The Missing Link: Integrating Interventional Pain Management in the Era of Multimodal Oncology.

Cancer-related pain (CrP) is one of the most frequent and debilitating issues that affect the quality of life of patients with cancer. Systemic analgesics, particularly opioids, have been the cornerstone of pain management. However, the following shortcomings of the mentioned therapies, such as side effects, tolerance, and inadequate relief in refractory cases, make implementing a more complete, multimodal treatment plan necessary. Interventional pain management (IPM) uses specific invasive procedures, with different degree of invasiveness, such as nerve blocks, neurolysis, neuromodulation, an

Psychiatry in times of war and armed conflicts.

Armed conflicts are major global determinants of illness, producing acute and chronic burden across mental health, population wellbeing, and societal stability. Current surveillance highlights high lethality in Myanmar, Sudan, the Palestinian Territories, and the Russia-Ukraine regions, alongside persistent low-intensity violence in Afghanistan, Mexico, and Yemen. Beyond mortality and physical injury, conflicts generate complex psychological, social, and structural sequelae across the life span. Contemporary war psychiatry has expanded from a narrow focus on trauma to an integrated biopsychoso

The SmartHabits: An Intelligent Privacy-Aware Home Care Assistance System.

Many researchers and product developers are striving toward achieving ICT-enabled independence of older adults by setting up Enhanced Living Environments (ELEs). Technological solutions, which are often based on the Internet of Things (IoT), show great potential in providing support for Active Aging. To enhance the quality of life for older adults and overcome challenges in enabling individuals to achieve their full potential in terms of physical, social, and mental well-being, numerous proof-of-concept systems have been built. These systems, often labeled as Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), var

End-of-life sedation and spousal grief: Exploring bereavement narratives with and without continuous deep sedation.

BACKGROUND: Spousal loss is a profoundly challenging experience, often leading to heightened risks of anxiety, depression, and prolonged grief. In the context of cancer, bereavement is further complicated by the caregiving role and the emotional toll of anticipating the end of life. Palliative care plays a crucial role in alleviating suffering, with Continuous Deep Sedation Until Death (CDSUD) being one approach to managing end-of-life distress. However, the impact of CDSUD on the grieving process remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the emotional trajectories of bereaved spo

Urgent lung allocation system in the Scandiatransplant countries.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the world, the scarcity of donor organs makes optimal allocation systems necessary. In the Scandiatransplant countries, organs for lung transplantation are allocated nationally. To ensure shorter wait time for critically ill patients, the Scandiatransplant urgent lung allocation system (ScULAS) was introduced in 2009, giving supranational priority to patients considered urgent. There were no pre-defined criteria for listing a patient as urgent, but each center was granted only 3 urgent calls per year. This study aims to explore the characteristics and outcome of patients

Palliative care conditions managed at home and self-reported challenges experienced by informal home-based caregivers in Rwanda: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: A greater dependency on informal home-based caregivers to assist patients in their homes stems from Rwanda's rising palliative care needs and the burden of terminal illnesses. These caregivers play a critical role in addressing patients' physical and emotional needs and assisting with daily activities. However, in low-resource settings like Rwanda, limited attention has been given to understanding their lived experiences and the challenges they face. This study primarily aimed to explore the lived experiences and caregiving challenges of informal home-based caregivers providing p

The effects of family configuration and support system failures during childhood and adolescence on college students' self-concepts and social skills.

This study examined the differential effects of familial configuration and support system failures in a sample of 256 college students. Regarding familial configuration, the results indicated that individuals who had experienced parental divorce were significantly more likely to have encountered parental hostility and/or lack of care, inadequate supervision when not in school, lack of concern by teachers, and more financial hardship. In turn, lower self-concepts and/or social skills were found to be associated with these kinds of life experiences (i.e., support system failures).

Infants' Domain-General Responses to Expectancy Violations.

The proposal that the human mind contains modular systems dedicated to processing distinct types of input has been influential for many decades. These systems are thought to function early in development; for example, infants recruit different brain areas and have different expectations about the behavior of physical objects versus social agents. Yet whether these specialized systems drive behavioral responses independently of one another early in life remains unknown. To find out, we examined individual differences in infants' responses to events involving physical objects versus social agent

Applications of Thermoresponsive Hydrogels for Sustained Drug Release in Ocular and Intravitreal Formulations Treating Visual Impairments.

Vision loss is one of the most debilitating eye impairments, with the leading causes such as cataracts, glaucoma, injuries to the surface of the eye and age-related macular degeneration, significantly affecting a person's quality of life and placing a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Effective treatment of these conditions remains challenging due to the complex anatomical and physiological barriers of the eye, which limit the penetration and retention of topically and intravitreally administered drugs. As a result, conventional ocular therapies often exhibit poor therapeutic efficacy,

Ability to Monitor National Responses to the HIV Epidemic "Beyond Viral Suppression": Findings From Six European Countries.

Objective: With more people living with HIV (PLHIV) ageing into their 50s and beyond in settings where antiretroviral therapy is widely available, non-AIDS comorbidities and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are becoming major challenges. Information is needed about whether national HIV monitoring programmes have evolved to reflect the changing focus of HIV care. Methods: We created a 56-item English-language survey to assess whether health systems report on common health-related issues for people with HIV including physical and mental health comorbidities, HRQoL, psychosocial needs, and

Psychosocial needs of female self-immolation survivors: a systematic review and meta synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Self-immolation is a traumatic method of self-harm, involving the intentional act of ending one's life. Due to advancements in medical care, there has been an increase in the number of survivors of severe burn injuries, including self-immolation. These survivors encounter various needs throughout their hospitalization and following discharge. This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial needs of female survivors of self-immolation in Middle Eastern countries. METHODS: Articles were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (ISI), Cochrane Library, and the Persian SID datab

Understanding the needs of children and young people with food hypersensitivities: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Research has highlighted the psychosocial impact of living with food hypersensitivities (FHS) on children and young people (CYP). However, there is a paucity of qualitative data from CYP themselves in terms of the support they would like to receive to improve their psychological well-being. OBJECTIVE: To further understand firsthand the experiences of CYP with FHS including the challenges they face and to inform structural changes in how their psychological well-being is supported. METHODS: CYP aged 8 to 17 years were recruited with self-reported food allergy or celiac disease an

Psychological Support for Personality (PSP) versus treatment as usual: study protocol for a feasibility randomized controlled trial of a low intensity intervention for people with personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated the clinical effectiveness of long-term psychological treatment for people with some types of personality disorder. However, the high intensity and cost of these interventions limit their availability. Lower-intensity interventions are increasingly being offered to people with personality disorder, but their clinical and cost effectiveness have not been properly tested in experimental studies. We therefore set out to develop a low intensity intervention for people with personality disorder and to test the feasibility of conducting a randomized con
