Browpexy through the upper lid (BUL): a new technique of lifting the brow with a standard blepharoplasty incision.

BACKGROUND: Browpexy returns the brow to an anatomical, aesthetically-appealing location on the upper face. Recently, browlifting techniques have evolved from aggressive, open approaches toward less invasive, limited-incision techniques. Browpexy through the upper lid (BUL), an innovative technique based on earlier practices, anchors the underlying brow soft tissue to the bone, allowing for stabilization. Furthermore, this procedure can be performed concomitantly with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty through the same access incision. OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluate the efficacy of BUL in patien…

The innate osteogenic potential of the maxillary sinus (Schneiderian) membrane: an ectopic tissue transplant model simulating sinus lifting.

Maxillary sinus membrane lifting is a common procedure aimed at increasing the volume of the maxillary sinus osseous floor prior to inserting dental implants. Clinical observations of bone formation in sinus lifting procedures without grafting bone substitutes were observed, but the biological nature of bone regeneration in sinus lifting procedures is unclear. This study tested whether this osteogenic activity relies on inherent osteogenic capacity residing in the sinus membrane by simulating the in vivo clinical condition of sinus lifting in an animal model. Maxillary sinus membrane cells wer…

[Exertional compartment syndrome of the lower leg and common peroneal nerve palsy as combined injury after weight lifting].

While the compartment syndrome after traumatic injury is a well-known entity and well recognised, an exercise-induced acute compartment syndrome is seldom and often missed. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can result in a poor outcome such as loss of function or limb. Early recognition and prompt fasciotomy are necessary. We would like to present the case of an exertional compartment syndrome of the tibialis anterior space after weight-lifting which was complicated by an acute pressure-induced palsy of the common peroneal nerve due to a self applied knee-support-bandage. A thorough case history…

One-stage operation of large oroantral fistula closure, sinus lifting, and autogenous bone grafting for dental implant installation.

Bone grafts to the maxillary sinus are often required after closure of an oroantral fistula (OAF) to allow for subsequent implant installation. This report describes a single procedure that closes a large OAF using bone grafting to the involved sinus. This technique involves sinus mucosal lifting via elevating the sinus membrane, which is recovered as a continuous layer by combining the residual sinus membranes with a rotated part of oral mucosa around the OAF. Autogenous bone from the ilium was grafted into the prepared sinus space, and the oral side of the graft was covered by a rotated pala…

Ability of a passive back support exoskeleton to mitigate fatigue related adaptations in a complex repetitive lifting task.

As work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) increase in prevalence, it is important to not only understand the mechanisms underpinning WRMSDs but also investigate ways to mitigate them in the workplace. Exoskeletons are an emerging technology which can reduce the physical demands required from the worker to perform lifting tasks. Previous research has primarily studied the effectiveness of back-support exoskeletons in constrained, flexion/extension tasks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a passive back-support exoskeleton in a complex, multiplanar repetitive manua…

The simple task of lifting five kilograms serves as a predictor of age-related disorders in old adults.

Muscle weakness is a risk factor for multiple diseases. However, most protocols to assess muscle weakness require clinical settings. A difficulty lifting 5 kg may be a simple measure of muscle weakness in domestic settings. However, no relevant study on assessing muscle weakness has been reported. We investigated the associations of difficulty lifting 5 kg with various musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological diseases in geriatric adults aged 50 or above from 15 countries (n = 51,536) over five years. The data was collected by the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in…

Intervertebral disc deformation in the lower lumbar spine during object lifting measured in vivo using indwelling bone pins.

Object lifting is often categorized into squat and stoop techniques, with the former believed to protect the back by maintaining a neutral spine, and the latter considered harmful due to spinal flexion. Despite the widespread promotion of these beliefs, there is no evidence to support such dichotomy, as spinal flexion is not conclusively linked to low back pain. This study aimed to investigate intervertebral disc deformation in the lower lumbar spine during squat and stoop lifting using indwelling bone pins. Five healthy males underwent insertion of Kirschner wires into the L3, L4, and L5 spin…

Long-Term Improvement of Crow's Feet Wrinkles in Combination With Cervicofacial and Temporal Lifting: Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: The lateral orbital crow's feet area is one for which rejuvenation is most frequently requested by patients. Moreover, lateral canthal wrinkles are a common source of dissatisfaction after rhytidoplasty. Botulinum toxin injection has emerged as a most popular, easy, and effective solution; nevertheless, repeated injections are required periodically for long-term effect. Other nonsurgical options have also been described to have some demonstrable advantages. Orbicularis oculi surgical manipulations have been described as well.
