Angioleiomyoma of the Lower Lip Clinically Mimicking a Mucocele.

Angioleiomyoma is a benign vascular smooth muscle tumor that rarely occurs in the oral cavity, particularly in the lower lip. Because of its nonspecific clinical presentation, it is frequently mistaken for more common benign lesions such as mucoceles. A 58-year-old woman presented with a painless, well-circumscribed submucosal mass of the lower lip that had gradually increased in size. The overlying mucosa was intact without discoloration, ulceration, or tenderness, and the lesion was clinically diagnosed as a mucocele. Excisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia with careful surgic…

The role of OCT4 and CD44 in lower lip carcinogenesis.

PURPOSE: Carcinogenesis is characterized by the transformation of normal cells into malignant cells. Concerning the lower lip, exposure to UV radiation is the main etiological factor associated with the development of epidermoid carcinomas and actinic cheilitis. According to the hierarchical model theory, cancer development is driven by populations of cancer stem cells. In this context, this study aimed to compare the expression of octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4) and CD44 in 40 lower lip epidermoid carcinoma (LLEC) and 40 actinic cheilitis (AC) cases. METHODS: OCT4 and CD44 expr…

Epidemiologic trends of cleft lip and/or palate in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data on the number of cleft lip and/or palate (orofacial cleft (OFC)) births in Switzerland are currently sparse. However, this knowledge is essential for better understanding the etiologies underlying the various cleft phenotypes and providing expectant parents with the best possible healthcare planning and counseling. METHODS: This is the first descriptive study to report data on the prevalence of the various cleft types, their sex, and regional distributions in Switzerland. Data for the years 1998-2021 were obtained from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Due t…

Assessing the Lower Face: Lips, Chin, and Jawline.

BACKGROUND: The lower face, including the lips, chin, and jawline, plays a defining role in facial proportion and expression. Aging of this region involves a complex interplay of skeletal remodeling, soft tissue descent, and muscle hyperactivity, which manifest differently across ethnic groups and influence aesthetic ideals. OBJECTIVE: To describe structural and cultural variations in lower-face anatomy and aging, and to outline evidence-based strategies for individualized, ethnically sensitive rejuvenation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary group of dermatologists, oculoplastic, an…

A Case of Congenital Midline Sinus of the Upper Lip.

Congenital lip sinus is known to occur in the upper lip, lower lip, or oral commissure, but a midline sinus of the upper lip is extremely rare. This report describes a 5-year-old boy who was born as a dizygotic twin at a gestational age of 33 weeks and 6 days, weighing 2,118 g. He was noted at birth to have a subcutaneous mass with an opening in the philtrum of the upper lip. Magnetic resonance imaging at 1 year of age revealed a teardrop-shaped cyst with high intensity on T2-weighted images beneath the upper lip. Surgical excision was performed due to the gradual enlargement of the mass. The …

Lip-Lick Cheilitis and Its Connection to the Brain.

An eight-year-old male who habitually licked his lips and presented with dry, flaky, and red skin bordering the outside of his lips was diagnosed with lip-lick cheilitis. This condition is exacerbated or, at times, caused by chronic lip-licking, leading to irritation and discomfort. Treatment included tacrolimus 0.03% topical ointment, which he was instructed to apply twice daily. He was also advised to stop licking his lips, maintain proper hydration, and use a stress ball when tempted to lick the irritated region. Following these interventions, there was a clear reduction in both irritation …

[Necrosis of the lip due to nasal abuse of cocaine].

We describe a patient who developed lip necrosis and a nasal septal defect after excessively nasal abuse of cocaine. Necrosis of the lip can be caused by local vasoconstriction of the vessels of the skin, by the anesthetic effects of cocaine, by local irritation and inflammation and by the effects of adulterants. The patient was unable to stop using cocaine on her own and was compulsorily admitted. The surgical reconstruction of the lip was planned, but not performed because of the constant use of cocaine.

[Modern management of children with cleft lip and palate].

Cleft lip and palate are the most common facial developmental disorders, affecting a significant number of individuals. Their incidence rate stands at 0.5–2 per 1,000 live births. Treating affected children involves a series of intricate surgical procedures spanning several years, necessitating the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team. To deliver effective therapy, specialists must stay abreast of the latest surgical advancements. While the established sequence of surgical and non-surgical treatments is widely accepted, individual judgment always plays a crucial role. Moreover, a comprehe…

Possible role of ALDH1 and CD44 in lip carcinogenesis.

Lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) accounts for 12% of all head and neck cancers. It is caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet light solar radiation and related to previous actinic cheilitis (AC). This study aimed to investigate the immunostaining of the putative cancer stem cells (CSC) markers ALDH1 and CD44 in AC (n=30) and LSCC (n=20). ALDH1 positivity was found to be statistically higher in LSCC than in AC lesions (p=0.0045), whilst CD44 expression was statistically higher in AC than in LSCC lesions (p=0.0155). ALDH1+ cells in AC lesions were associated with specific clinical features: …
