Mandibular fractures are among the most frequently encountered maxillofacial injuries. Yet, the optimal management strategy between closed and open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) remains a topic of considerable debate, given differences in functional outcomes and complication rates. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate and compare the clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes of closed reduction (CR) using maxillomandibular fixation and ORIF using titanium miniplates in patients with isolated mandibular fractures. Eighty patients were randomly allocated into two groups-Group …

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are among the most common maxillofacial injuries and are frequently associated with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), creating combined skeletal, occlusal, periodontal, and pulpal treatment priorities. Integrated protocols addressing both the fracture and the dental component remain limited.
METHODS: The present literature review was conducted by means of a structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection from 2000 to 2026, complemented by manual reference-list screening. A structured Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison…

Surgical intervention utilising open and (less commonly) closed reduction, are the main methods for the management of fractures of the mandible that do not involve the condyle or coronoid. Non-surgical management of these fracture patterns is rare. This systematic review aimed to collate current evidence surrounding this topic. A systematic review was undertaken using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Inclusion criteria were adults with mandibular fractures. Exclusion criteria included any form of surgical intervention including open or closed r…

OBJECTIVES: Previous finite element analyses (FEA) have shown promising results for using two titanium screws in treating mandibular condylar head fractures but limited mechanical stability of a two-screw osteosynthesis with magnesium screws. Given the potential benefits of magnesium screws in terms of biocompatibility and resorption, this study aimed to compare two- and three-screw osteosynthesis solutions for a right condylar head fracture (AO CMF type p) with magnesium screws with a FEA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A previously validated finite element model simulating a 350 N bite on the contr

PURPOSE: Nonsurgical treatment of mandibular fractures secondary to medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) or osteoradionecrosis (ORN) mostly results in nonunion, whereas nonsurgical fracture treatment of atrophic fractures can achieve favorable results in selected cases. The aim of this study was to compare callus formation in pathological mandibular fractures due to MRONJ, ORN, or extreme mandibular atrophy.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study reviewing the medical records of all MRONJ-, ORN-, or atrophy-related fractures treated at the departments of maxillofacial surgery in…

Controversy continues about the benefits and disadvantages of open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the condylar head. Once a decision to treat surgically has been made, an appropriate method of fixation must be chosen. Standard titanium fixation has a number of complications, including the risk of protrusion of the screw beyond the condylar head and the possible need for removal later. Resorbable fixation is an alternative, and ultrasound-activated resorbable pins are a new innovation. We have treated a series of 15 patients with 17 fractures of the condylar head, in which the

OBJECTIVE: Arch bars as treatment for a fractured mandibular condyle are inconvenient to patients and lead to lowered quality of life (QOL). To overcome these inconveniences, IMF-screws (IMFS) to facilitate intermaxillary fixation during surgery have been developed. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and compare QOL for patients treated for a fractured mandibular condyle with either IMFS or arch bars.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This research trial was conducted from 2010 to 2014 as part of an earlier prospective, multicenter, randomized clinical trial in which the use of IMFS was c

We retrospectively evaluated mandibular fractures in patients who presented to a London teaching hospital between June 2005 and May 2010. A total of 1261 patients sustained 1994 mandibular fractures (mean 1.6, range 1-5). The incidence of mandibular fracture was higher in male patients (87%) than in females (13%) (male:female ratio 6.6:1), and the peak incidence was during the third decade for both genders. The most common site of fracture was the angle (30%), followed by the parasymphysis (27%), and condyle (27%). Overall, interpersonal violence was the most common cause (72%) followed by fal…

We evaluated the osteosynthesis of condylar fractures using resorbable mini plates and ultrasound-aided insertion of pins clinically and histologically. Stability was greater than that with resorbable screws because of the fusion of pin and plate. Long term evaluation showed complete resorption of the polymeric osteosynthesis material.
