Intraoral optical impression versus conventional impression for fully edentulous maxilla: an in vivo comparative study.

AIM: The aim of the present in vivo study was to compare the clinical trueness of primary mucostatic impressions obtained either by a classical alginate or an optical intraoral scanner technique in patients with a fully edentulous maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with a fully edentulous maxilla were included in the study and underwent both conventional impressions and intraoral optical impressions (Trios 3). The conventional impressions were casted and the resulting plaster casts were digitized using a desktop scanner (Imetric D104i). These digitized impressions were sup…

Feline maxillary sarcoma: clinicopathologic features of spindle cell sarcomas from the maxilla of 25 cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Feline maxillary sarcomas are aggressive spindle cell neoplasms that occur within the maxilla, palate and upper lip of cats. This diagnosis includes fibrosarcoma and sarcomas with indeterminate histomorphology, excluding melanocytic tumors and sarcomas that can be differentiated by histomorphology. In this study of feline maxillary sarcomas in 25 cats, the cats' ages ranged from 4 to 16 years (median 12.5). These sarcomas presented as smooth thickenings or mass lesions of the gingiva and palate, often involving both the right and left quadrants of the maxilla. Radiographic…

Tumefactive fibroinflammatory lesion of the maxilla: Successful resection and microvascular reconstruction after failed medical therapy.

Tumefactive fibroinflammatory lesions (TFILs) of the head and neck are rare and benign but locally aggressive lesions. The etiology and pathogenesis of these lesions are unknown. Medical management is regarded the first line of treatment. Surgical management has been rarely reported for head and neck lesions. A 51-year-old female presented with a 6-month history of left facial swelling and pain that subsequently developed into progressive inframalar hollowing and asymmetry. Biopsies confirmed tumefactive fibroinflammatory lesion of the maxilla. Initial treatment with high-dose steroids led to …

Mucormycosis in maxilla: Rehabilitation of facial defects using interim removable prostheses: A clinical case report.

Maxilla is one of the facial bones with rich vascular supply. Necrosis of maxillary bone is rare and may occur due to infection, trauma and rare metabolic disorders. Maxilla is essential bone forming the roof of oral cavity. Mucormycosis is one of the most common fungal infection, which affects maxilla especially in diabetes and immunocompromised patients. We report a case of maxillary necrosis due to mucormycosis in an uncontrolled diabetic patient. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can reduce the mortality and morbidity of this lethal fungal infection.

Nasopharyngeal cavity narrowing associated with posterior maxilla and pterygoid plate fracture: report of three cases.

The CT appearances of three cases with severe nasopharyngeal cavity narrowing are described. In all cases the facial trauma was due to a motor vehicle accident. These cases demonstrate that posterior maxilla and pterygoid plate fractures can cause significant nasopharyngeal soft tissues swelling, most likely due to haemorrhage and/or oedema. Severe nasopharyngeal cavity narrowing could cause difficulty in elective nasogastric tube and endotracheal tube intubation via the nasopharyngeal route.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of maxilla misdiagnosed as a benign fibrous lesion: A rare case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma, essentially composed of poorly differentiated spindle cells interspersed with areas of cartilage or chondroid matrix. MC is extremely rare; it only accounts for 0.1 % of head and neck tumors and for only 1 % of all chondrosarcomas (CSs). CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old man presented with a medical history of a painful irritation at the dextral maxillary region, presented as a mass at the vestibule of the oral cavity near the upper molars, and had been misdiagnosed as a benign fibrous lesion and excised w…

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma with pagetoid spread arising in periapical odontogenic epithelium of the maxilla.

To date, pagetoid spread-the proliferation of pagetoid cells in intraepidermal lesions, as observed in secondary extramammary Paget's disease-has not been reported in squamous epithelium derived from the extension of head and neck carcinomas. Herein, we report a case of pagetoid squamous cell proliferation associated with a primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) arising in the periapical lesion of the maxilla, a finding not reported previously. A 60-year-old man presented with prostate adenocarcinoma and bilateral pubic bone, ilium bone, and sacral bone metastases. Radiological examination reve…

Esthetic reconstruction of a localized severely resorbed anterior maxilla associated with peri-implantitis: A clinical report.

This clinical report described the esthetic reconstruction of a localized severely resorbed right anterior maxilla associated with peri-implantitis. For vertical bone augmentation, guided bone regeneration surgery was performed by raising a flap with the remote incision technique, followed by soft tissue grafting and vestibuloplasty. The biologically oriented preparation technique was used to improve the health and stability of the peri-implant tissues. The surgical treatment and a novel method of prosthetic rehabilitation provided excellent esthetic and functional outcomes.

Rare hybrid tumor of odontogenic fibromyxoma and central giant cell granuloma in maxilla: First reported case.

Fibromyxoma is a locally aggressive rare benign tumor of mesenchymal origin with or without odontogenic epithelium. The etiology of this tumor remains unknown and it is responsible for approximately 3-8% of all cysts and tumors. Another locally destructive benign lesion is central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) which contains osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells. CGCG accounts for about 7% of all benign jaw tumors, which usually affects younger females. A hybrid lesion with histologic features of both central fibromyxoma and CGCG has not been reported in the literature so far. In the presen

Is conservative treatment (enucleation using modified Carnoy's solution) of odontogenic keratocyst in the maxilla good prognosis?

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) located in the maxillae have rarely been reported in the literature. Standard treatment modalities for OKC range from marsupialization to marginal resection. However, most of the studies on OKC treatment have been related to mandibular OKCs. The anatomical structure and loose bone density of the maxillae and the empty space of the maxillary sinus could allow rapid growth of a lesion and the ability to tolerate tumor occupancy in the entire maxilla within a short period of time. Therefore, OKCs of the maxillae require more aggressive surgery, such as resection. As…

Chondromyxoid fibroma affecting the maxilla in a 1-year-old child: Immunohistochemical analysis and literature review.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a benign chondroid/myxoid matrix-producing tumor that often develops in the long bones of young adults. CMF is rarely reported in the craniofacial skeleton, with most cases presenting with bone erosion or destruction, which may lead to a misdiagnosis. To date, approximately 129 cases of CMF in the craniofacial region have been reported, with only three cases in patients aged less than 1 year. Of these 129 cases, only 34 affected the jaws. A 1-year-old boy presented with a mass in the left anterior maxilla, extending and compressing the ipsilateral nasal cavity. A…
