Periodontal complications following orthognathic surgery and genioplasty in a 19-year-old: a case report.

Bimaxillary osteotomies and a sliding genioplasty were performed to correct mandibular micrognathia and maxillary vertical hyperplasia in a 19-year-old white male with a Class II, division 1 malocclusion and anterior open bite. At a follow-up appointment with the orthodontist 4 weeks after the surgical procedure, the mandibular anterior teeth showed severe gingival recession, exposing labial root surfaces on the mandibular central incisors. Grafting procedures were able to restore labial soft tissue on the affected teeth. It is suggested that wound healing contraction of gingival tissue in the

Elimination of transverse dental compensation is critical for treatment of patients with severe facial asymmetry.

This case report describes the importance of eliminating transverse dental compensation during preoperative orthodontic treatment for a patient with severe facial asymmetry. The patient, a 17-year-old Japanese woman, had severe facial asymmetry involving the maxilla and the mandible, and extreme transverse dental compensation of the anterior and posterior teeth in both arches. Therefore, the main treatment objectives were elimination of the transverse dental compensation by orthodontic treatment and correction of the morphology of the maxilla and the mandible by orthognathic surgery. The preop

Update of the classification of midpalatal suture behaviour after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion using computed tomography.

The aim of this study was to update the midpalatal suture classification after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) using computed tomography (CT). Thirty-five patients with a transverse maxillary deficiency and unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite underwent SARME with osteotomy of the pterygoid apophysis of the sphenoid. CT was performed before installation of the Hyrax expander appliance and after the final activation. Opening of the midpalatal suture was classified into three types: type I, total midpalatal suture opening from anterior nasal spine (ANS) to posterior

Different approaches for management of Class III siblings: A long-term follow-up of two case reports.

Class III malocclusion can be varied in presentation and progression. This report describes the presentation, course of treatment and long-term follow-up of two siblings with Class III malocclusion. Two cases discussed in this report were different in their presentation. Sibling 1, a 19-year-old male patient had developed skeletal Class III malocclusion with severe maxillomandibular discrepancy, showing both components of maxillary hypoplasia and mandibular prognathism & asymmetry with average growth pattern. Sibling 2, a 13-year-old male patient had developed a Class III malocclusion with max

Intraoperative Change in Defect Size during Maxillary Reconstruction Using Surgical Guides Created by CAD/CAM.

Surgical osteotomy guides created by computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) have been developed and are now widely used in maxillofacial reconstruction. However, there are no standard procedures for dealing with an intraoperative change in defect size. We report on a case in which we used our CAD/CAM guides to deal with an intraoperative change in defect size in a maxillary reconstruction. We planned the maxillary reconstruction using a free fibula flap because of left maxillary sinus cancer in a 73-year-old man. In Japan, we cannot use commercially supplied CAD/CAM guide

A cadaveric study of the morphometric relationships and bony composition of the caucasian nasolacrimal fossa.

AIMS: To describe the morphometric relationships and bony composition of the nasolacrimal fossa in a Caucasian population with particular reference to the lacrimo-maxillary suture (LMS). METHODS: Forty-seven orbits from 24 formalin fixed cadavers were exenterated. Morphometric measurements were taken between anatomical landmarks forming the lacrimal fossa on the medial orbital wall. RESULTS: The mean recorded distance from the anterior lacrimal crest (ALC) to the posterior lacrimal crest (PLC) and the LMS were 8.8 mm (± 1.6) and 4.3 mm (± 1.1), respectively. In 25.5% of the orbits the LMS wa

The Usage of Reversed Köle-Type Mandibular Anterior Segmental Subapical Osteotomy: Radiological, Clinical, and Surgical Considerations.

The currently common procedures in orthognathic surgery are widely used. Different forms of skeletal malocclusion can be treated with great outcomes in terms of bite, bone harmony, function, improved mastication, esthetics, and even decreased problems with breathing. Each type and intensity of malocclusion may affect decision-making in terms of distraction, selection of osteotomy design, or even guide clinical and surgical decisions to use a less popular osteotomy protocol. CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) is currently a milestone in the establishment of the condition of jaw bones, bone st

Long-term clinical and radiologic documentation of a maxillary odontogenic myxoma from early clinical signs to implant-supported prosthodontic rehabilitation: Case report and review of the literature.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a non-metastasizing neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, arising in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. When regarding the whole spectrum of differential diagnoses for osteolytic jaw lesions, OM constitutes a benign tumor rarely located in the maxilla. Radiographically, displacement of teeth and frequent involvement of the sinus will be found with advanced maxillary OM. The tumor can be removed by means of several techniques, ranging from conservative measures to extended surgical procedures that differ according to type of bone resection and reconstruction of the defect

Dentoalveolar Complex Autotransplantation in Esthetic Zone Rehabilitation: A Case Report.

Tooth autotransplantation is a biologically favorable option for the replacement of missing teeth and has demonstrated predictable outcomes with both immature and mature donor teeth. In challenging anterior maxillary defects, digitally assisted variations of the technique may expand treatment possibilities and offer an alternative to conventional bone augmentation in selected cases. This article presents a digital and clinical workflow for dentoalveolar complex (DAC) autotransplantation in anterior maxillary reconstruction. The reported case involves transplantation of a donor tooth together w
