Correlation between Endodontic Infection and Periodontal Disease and Their Association with Chronic Sinusitis: A Clinical-tomographic Study.

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the roots of maxillary posterior teeth to the maxillary sinus floor can be associated with the development of chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS). Therefore, this study evaluated the correlation between the presence of endodontic infection and periodontal disease in maxillary posterior teeth and the presence of CMS. METHODS: A total of 83 patients (159 maxillary sinuses) were selected and underwent clinical dental examination to assess tooth mobility and pulp condition. In addition, cone-beam computed tomography was performed to evaluate the presence of periapical…

Odontogenic Sinusitis-Associated Pott's Puffy Tumor: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a nonneoplastic complication of acute frontal sinusitis characterized by subperiosteal abscess (SPOA) formation and osteomyelitis. Although various clinical conditions are associated with frontal SPOA, cases associated with odontogenic sinusitis are rare. We report a recurrent case of frontal SPOA who had a previous history of craniotomy due to head trauma. The patient was presented with headache, facial swelling and diagnosed as frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinusitis with frontal SPOA, which is PPT. The patient was surgically managed by endoscopic sinus surgery …

Coexistence of frontal sinus hypoplasia with maxillary sinus hypoplasia: a radiological study.

The goal of this study was to determine whether frontal sinus hypoplasia coexists with maxillary sinus hypoplasia. Analyzing paranasal CT scans retrospectively, we included 86 patients who had a hypoplastic maxillary sinus at least on one side and 80 patients with bilateral normal maxillary sinuses (control group). We classified hypoplastic maxillary sinuses using the classification system previously defined by Bolger et al. (Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 103(5):759-765, 1990). We classified the frontal sinuses as aplastic, hypoplastic, medium-sized, and hyperplastic; as previously defined by Gue

Computational fluid dynamic modelling of maxillary sinus irrigation after maxillary antrostomy and modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy.

OBJECTIVE: For recalcitrant chronic maxillary sinusitis, modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy has been shown to be clinically beneficial after failed maxillary antrostomy as endoscopic medial maxillectomy may offer improved topical therapy delivery. This study compared irrigation patterns after maxillary antrostomy versus endoscopic medial maxillectomy, using computational fluid dynamic modelling. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old female with left chronic maxillary sinusitis underwent maxillary antrostomy, followed by endoscopic medial maxillectomy. Computational fluid dynamic models were created…

Association between Odontogenic and Maxillary Sinus Conditions: A Retrospective Cone-Beam Computed Tomographic Study.

Odontogenic infections can directly trigger maxillary sinusitis. CBCT is an excellent choice for precise examination of maxillary sinuses and hard tissues within the oral cavity. The objective of this retrospective and the cross-sectional study was to analyze the influence of odontogenic conditions on the presence and intensity of maxillary sinus mucous membrane thickening using CBCT imaging. Moreover, periodontal bone loss and anatomic relationship between adjacent teeth and maxillary sinuses were assessed to evaluate its possible impact on creating maxillary thickening. The study sample cons…

Sinonasal teeth.

Ectopic eruption of the teeth in the sinonasal tract and the migration of a displaced dental fragment from the maxillary sinus to the nose are two rare phenomena. This paper reports three cases: an asymptomatic ectopic tooth within the nasal septum, an ectopic maxillary sinus tooth causing repeated attacks of sinusitis, and a dental root that reached the nose through the maxillary antrum associated with Aspergillus sinusitis. The etiology, diagnosis, complications, and treatment of simonasal teeth are discussed.

A Unique Case of Supernumerary Teeth Erupting Inside a Maxillary Sinus Osteoma.

Introduction: Ectopic foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus occur rarely. Ectopic tooth eruption rarely occurs in the orbit, nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, and elsewhere. Ectopic eruption of teeth in the maxillary sinus is most commonly associated with wisdom teeth and is rarely associated with supernumerary teeth. This rare phenomenon may be accompanied by chronic recurrent sinusitis with headaches and facial pain. However, fibro-osseous lesions in the paranasal sinuses are discovered incidentally on X-ray images and are often asymptomatic. Osteoma is the most common fibro-osseous lesion that

Evaluation of the lacrimal recess of the maxillary sinus: an anatomical study.

UNLABELLED: The anatomical relation between the maxillary sinus and the nasolacrimal duct has gained greater importance with the advent of microsurgeries and endoscopic-assisted sinonasal procedures, and the growing use of endonasal surgery to perform middle meatus procedures and transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy. We did not find reports on maxillary sinus classification concerning its lacrimal recess, nor how often it is found. OBJECTIVE: To assess how frequent the lacrimal recess can be found in the maxillary sinuses of dissected anatomical specimens. METHOD: We assessed 31 half-heads from

Airflow and temperature distribution inside the maxillary sinus: a computational fluid dynamics simulation.

CONCLUSION: The airflow velocity and flux in maxillary sinuses were much lower than those in the nasal cavity, and the temperature in maxillary sinuses was much higher than the temperature in the middle meatus. With the increase of maximum diameter of the ostium, the above indices changed little. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the paper was to investigate, first, the flow and temperature distribution inside normal maxillary sinus in inspiration, and second, flow and temperature alteration with the increase of maximum ostium diameter. METHODS: Three-dimensional models with nasal cavities and bila

Negative Predictors of Tooth Extraction in the Management of Odontogenic Sinusitis in a Japanese Patient Population: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction  There are no clear guidelines for deciding between endoscopic sinus surgery and tooth extraction for the treatment of odontogenic sinusitis. Furthermore, tooth extraction does not necessarily improve sinusitis and eventually results in additional endoscopic sinus surgery. Objective  The present study aimed to retrospectively investigate negative predictive factors of tooth extraction for odontogenic sinusitis. Methods  In total, 22 patients with odontogenic sinusitis, who underwent tooth extraction between April 2017 and March 2021, were included. The patients were divided into t

Maxillary sinus inflammatory disease: ultrasound compared to computed tomography.

Fifty-six patients (age range, 15-79 yr, average, 37.0+/-18.5 yr), with a clinical and/or radiological diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis, were prospectively studied with ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT). The imaging finding which supported the diagnosis of acute sinusitis with US was the identification of the hyperechoic posterior antral wall through the hypoechoic inflammation. The findings were compared to CT (3 mm axial sections). The sensitivity of US for maxillary sinus disease was found to be 66.7% and the specificity was 94.9%, which were similar to the plain film ones …
