Echinococcosis is a serious parasitic disease that ends lethally in 95% of untreated infected patients. It was first diagnosed in Slovakia in the year 2000. It is caused by the larval stage of a tapeworm belonging to the genus Echinococcus, which was assigned to the group "A" of zoonoses in the year 2004. The number of new infections is rising because of increasing percentage of infected red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Early and accurate diagnosis of infections with this parasite is essential for proper initiation of adequate therapy. Thanks to professional multidisciplinary efforts and new laborat

BACKGROUND: Globally, hookworms infect 440 million people in developing countries. Especially children and women of childbearing age are at risk of developing anaemia as a result of infection. To control hookworm infection and disease (i.e. reduce the prevalence of medium and heavy infection to <1 %), the World Health Organization has set the target to provide annual or semi-annual preventive chemotherapy (PC) with albendazole (ALB) or mebendazole (MEB) to at least 75 % of all children and women of childbearing age in endemic areas by 2020. Here, we predict the feasibility of achieving <1 % pr…

BACKGROUND: The presence of poor quality medicines in the market is a global threat on public health, especially in developing countries. Therefore, we assessed the quality of two commonly used anthelminthic drugs [mebendazole (MEB) and albendazole (ALB)] and one antiprotozoal drug [tinidazole (TNZ)] in Ethiopia.
METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A multilevel stratified random sampling, with as strata the different levels of supply chain system in Ethiopia, geographic areas and government/privately owned medicines outlets, was used to collect the drug samples using mystery shoppers. The three drugs…

A trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of flubendazole against experimentally induced trichinellosis in pigs when given mixed with food at different dose rates. At the start of the experiment, 48 pigs were infected with approximately 35,000 larvae of Trichinella spiralis, afterwards the animals were distributed in six groups. The first three groups were used to test the activity of the drug against adult stages. Other three groups served to define the efficacy against muscle larvae. The dose rate of flubendazole varied according to the purpose of the experiment (from 8 mg/kg up to 62 mg

Serology in patients 1 and 2 was positive on admission, in patient 3 after one week. Mebendazole was administered, initially 50 mg/kg in three doses for 2 days. Drug blood levels were determined 1 and 4 hours after start of treatment and the dosage was then increased to 80-100 mg/kg daily. Duration of treatment ranged from 11 to 14 days. All pa …

Nine cases of human infection with Strongyloides stercoralis are reported among patients admitted to the Seoul Paik and Sang-Kye Paik Hospit … ar-old woman who complained of arthritis and abdominal discomfort, was treated with albendazole and mebendazole, and on the 4th and 5th treatment day 220 parasitic adult females were collected from the diarrheal stool. Trichinosis is a parasitic disease transmitted to man by ingestion of contaminated raw meat, usually pork, containing cysts of Trichinella spiralis. Formerly appearing as serious epidemics, it has now become uncommon due to public health control measures. Since the Jewish and Moslem religions forbid consumption of pork, the disease is even rarer in Israel. The literature indicates that all the cases of trichinosis hospitalized in Israel were contaminated abroad. We describe an Israeli family in which trichinosis following the eating of boar meat, hunted along Israel's northern sea coast (Hof H

After specifying that rupture of a hydatid cyst in the peritoneal cavity is one of the most serious and rarest complications of hepatic hydatidosis, attention is paid to the peritoneal hydatid (o chole-hydatid). The aetiopathogenetic mechanisms and the anatomo-pathological features of this type of lesion are described in brief. Finally, the personally employed diagnostic protocol and therapeutic strategy in the face of this feared complication are reported.

Female filariae of the species Brugia malayi and Litomosoides carinii were investigated by means of electron microscopy after in vivo treatment with flubendazole. The earliest fine-structure alteration in both species was the disappearance of microtubuli from the intestinal cells as soon as 6 h after treatment. There was no further disintegration of intestinal cells for several days. Microtubuli disappeared from the outer zone of the hypodermal cytoplasm 24 h after treatment. At this time, marked alterations were also observed in the oogonia and in the embryonic cells. Many of these were swoll

The study examines the rate of re-acquisition of Trichuris trichiura infection after treatment in two populations, one of mixed age and the other of children with known pre-intervention infection intensity. A population living in a Caribbean village was treated with mebendazole and the rate of reacquisition of infection of four age classes (2-4, 5-10, 11-30, 30+ years) monitored over a 20-month period. The reinfection rate was higher in the child age-classes indicating either that children are more exposed to infection or that adults slowly develop a partially effective acquired immunity. A co…
