The results of the treatment of 102 children at the age of from 25 days to 14 years with the Meckel's diverticulum (uncomplicated--in 37, complicated--in 65) were analysed. Tactics of treatment depended on the state and age of the children, history of the disease, findings of roentgenocontrast and radionuclide study of the stomach and intestine, laparoscopy, macro- and microscopic picture, state of the abdominal cavity at the moment of operation. In most patients, the favourable results of treatment were achieved. The lethality was 3%.

A significant association between Meckel's diverticulum and Crohn's disease has been suggested in the clinical literature. Ten patients with entities demonstrated radiographically as well as cases reported in the literature were analyzed to determine the relevance of this association to radiologic evaluation. The Meckel's diverticulum in most cases was an incidental finding whereas the Crohn's disease usually accounted for the patient's clinical symptoms. Recognition of this association should prevent unnecessary laparotomy for an incidental Meckel's diverticulum and improve the radiographic d

A 3.5-year-old boy presented twice within 36 hours to an emergency department with worsening abdominal distress. At surgery, an isolated axial volvulus of a Meckel's diverticulum was found. This finding has been reported three times in the last 20 years and has involved only adult patients. Meckel's diverticulum, although uncommon, can be extremely serious. Its presentation and pathophysiology are reviewed.

Approximately 4% of patients with Meckel's diverticulum will experience complication, the most common of which are intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute inflammation, and perforation. We report an extremely rare complication of perforated Meckel's diverticulum which presented as hemoperitoneum.

During a 10 year period 49 patients were operated upon in Oxford for Meckel's diverticulum. Radiological imaging of the small intestine with radionuclide scintigraphy, small bowel barium enema or angiography was performed in 11 patients. Radionuclide scintigraphy was positive in one out of six patients investigated. The small bowel barium enema detected an abnormality in seven out of eight patients examined and identified the diverticulum in six. Angiography was performed in three patients and active bleeding was demonstrated in two. Our experience would indicate that the small bowel enema is

Cases of symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum treated surgically on an emergency basis during the last decade are reviewed. A series of 18 patients were divided into two groups depending on the presence or absence of ectopic tissue in the diverticulum. Group 1 consisted of five patients (28 percent) without ectopic tissue, and Group 2 consisted of 13 patients (72 percent) with ectopic tissue (8 gastric ectopia, 2 pancreatic ectopia, and 3 both gastric and pancreatic ectopia). Previous clinical records related to Meckel's diverticulum were found for 54 percent of the patients in Group 2 and for no

The authors report a case of giant Meckel's diverticulum, presenting as a subumbilical abdominal mass, associated with an infectious picture and anemia in a 16 month-old boy. Epidemiologic, pathologic and clinical features of this rare disorder are reviewed as are the diagnostic means. The differential diagnosis with other cystic masses of the umbilical area (omphalo-mesenteric duct cyst, urachal cyst, mesenteric cyst, duplication) is discussed.

A patient with a carcinoid tumour arising in a Meckel's diverticulum and presenting with acute small intestinal obstruction is described. Review of previously reported cases indicates that the initial clinical presentation of carcinoid tumours occurring in a Meckel's diverticulum is usually similar to that of appendiceal carcinoids. While most carcinoids in Meckel's diverticula present as incidental findings at post-mortem examination or laparotomy, their metastatic potential and subsequent behaviour resembles that of other small intestinal carcinoid tumours.
