Executive functioning in cognitively normal middle-aged offspring of late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients.

Episodic memory deficits are traditionally seen as the hallmark cognitive impairment during the prodromal continuum of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Previous studies identified early brain alterations in regions subserving executive functions in asymptomatic, middle-aged offspring of patients with LOAD (O-LOAD), suggesting that premature episodic memory deficits could be associated to executive dysfunction in this model. We hypothesized that O-LOAD would exhibit reduced executive performance evidenced by increased errors and decreased strategy use on an episodic memory task. We assess

Worry modulates recognition memory and ERP correlates of retrieval.

Worry, as a core cognitive feature of anxiety, is known to impair attention and memory. However, its effects on episodic memory retrieval and the associated neural mechanisms are still underexplored. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between of worry and episodic memory retrieval by examining recognition performance and associated neural responses. Specifically, we compared behavioral outcomes and event-related potential (ERP) components between individuals (N = 49) with high (HW) and low (LW) levels of worry during an episodic memory task involving non-emotional stimuli (old

Amnesia in frontotemporal dementia: shedding light on the Geneva historical data.

Recent accumulated evidence indicates that episodic memory impairments could be part of the initial clinical expression of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). An early study on this issue was carried out by Constantinidis and colleagues in 1974, but it was subsequently overlooked for a long period of time. The scope of the present research was: (a) to explore the presence of early episodic memory impairments in the entire population of neuropathologically confirmed FTD patients from the Geneva brain collection; and (b) to expand the present insight on the association between the initial symptomatol

Association of cognitive function and risk for elder abuse in a community-dwelling population.

AIM: This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional association between cognitive function and elder abuse. METHODS: The Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP) is a population-based study conducted in a geographically defined community (n = 8,932). We identified 238 CHAP participants who had elder abuse reported to a social services agency. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (perceptual speed), and both immediate and delayed recall of the East Boston Memory Test (episodic memory). An index of global cognitive func

Onset of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Characterize the onset and timing of cognitive decline in Parkinson disease (PD) from the first recognizable stage of cognitively symptomatic PD-mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) to PD dementia (PDD). Thirty-nine participants progressed from PD to PDD and 25 remained cognitively normal. METHODS: Bayesian-estimated disease-state models described the onset of an individual's cognitive decline across 12 subtests with a change point. RESULTS: Subtests measuring working memory, visuospatial processing ability, and crystalized memory changed significantly 3 to 5 years before their firs

Verbal encoding deficits in a patient with a left retrosplenial lesion.

Over the past decade, memory impairments associated with retrosplenial damage have received increased attention among neuroscientists, although the exact role of the retrosplenial region in memory has not been clearly defined. Evidence from lesion studies and functional neuroimaging has implicated the retrosplenial region in verbal episodic memory, temporal ordering of information, and topographical memory. In addition, recent positron emission tomography studies have shown increased activation of the retrosplenial cortex during tasks involving both the encoding and retrieval of episodic infor

Brain mechanisms and memory.

When mental operations share input and output mechanisms, it is necessary to resort to neuropsychological evidence to determine whether they belong to the same or different systems. That multiple memory systems exist is suggested by dissociation between memory performances by normal people, and proven by dissociations in memory performances induced by focal brain damage. The pathological forgetting of the amnesic syndrome is limited to memory for events ("episodic memory") and appears to be due to the patient's inability in escape from control of his present internal and external environment i

Common and unique effects of HD-tDCS to the social brain across cultural groups.

Cultural background influences social cognition, however no study has examined brain stimulation differences attributable to cultural background. 104 young adults [52 South-East Asian Singaporeans (SEA); 52 Caucasian Australians (CA)] received anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) or the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ). Participants completed tasks with varying demands on self-other processing including visual perspective taking (VPT)and episodic memory with self and other encoding. At baseline, SEA showed gr

Efficacy of a Computer-Assisted Cognitive Rehabilitation Intervention in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Patients: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

Cognitive impairment is frequently encountered in multiple sclerosis (MS) affecting between 40-65% of individuals, irrespective of disease duration and severity of physical disability. In the present multicenter randomized controlled trial, fifty-eight clinically stable RRMS patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment and relatively low disability status were randomized to receive either computer-assisted (RehaCom) functional cognitive training with an emphasis on episodic memory, information processing speed/attention, and executive functions for 10 weeks (IG; n = 32) or standard clin

Neural correlates of episodic encoding and recognition of words in unmedicated patients during an acute episode of schizophrenia: a functional MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Memory impairment has been well documented in schizophrenia. In a previous study, the authors investigated patterns of brain activity during episodic encoding and recognition of words in remitted, stable schizophrenia outpatients being treated with novel antipsychotics. The same procedure was used in this study to investigate unmedicated patients during an acute episode of schizophrenia. METHOD: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study regional brain activation in 10 unmedicated patients experiencing an acute episode of schizophrenia and 10 healthy comparison subject

Autobiographical memory after temporal lobe resection: neuropsychological and MRI volumetric findings.

This study examined the contribution of medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures in autobiographical memory. While some investigators have reported a temporal gradient in memory performance, characterized by retrieval difficulties limited to recent periods of life [Squire and Alvarez (Retrograde amnesia and memory consolidation: a neurobiological perspective. Curr Opin Neurobiol 1995; 5: 169-77)], others have suggested that this impairment involves all life-time periods [Nadel and Moscovitch (Memory consolidation, retrograde amnesia and the hippocampal complex. Audiovisual Learning in Dyslexic and Typical Adults: Modulating Influences of Location and Context Consistency.

Learning to read involves efficient binding of visual to auditory information. Aberrant cross-modal binding skill has been observed in both children and adults with developmental dyslexia. Here, we examine the contribution of episodic memory to acquisition of novel cross-modal bindings in typical and dyslexic adult readers. Participants gradually learned arbitrary associations between unfamiliar Mandarin Chinese characters and English-like pseudowords over multiple exposures, simulating the early stages of letter-to-letter sound mapping. The novel cross-modal bindings were presented in consist

Mild cognitive impairment--an early stage of Alzheimer's disease?

The hypothesis that mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) was investigated by reviewing recent research from three sources: asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals carrying mutations that cause AD, hospital-samples of non-demented patients with MCI at the initial examination that are followed longitudinally, and community-based incident cases of AD. Studies with asymptomatic mutation carriers of the amyloid precursor protein and presenilin 1 gene have shown a linear and disease-related decline in most cognitive functions that begins approximatel

Personality trait and state associations with cognitive functioning and variability in middle-aged and older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Personality characteristics are recognized as early indicators of later cognitive functioning, yet existing studies have primarily focused on trait-level trends. How well these between-person differences uncover daily cognitive functioning processes remains unclear. Addressing this entails examining momentary personality states, which may accumulate over time to influence longer-term cognitive outcomes. Accordingly, this study investigates associations between personality traits and states and momentary cognitive functioning and variability. METHODS: We conducted a three-week ecol

Reading specific memories from human neurons before and after sleep.

The ability to retrieve a single episode encountered just once is a hallmark of human intelligence and episodic memory[1]. Yet, decoding a specific memory from neuronal activity in the human brain remains a formidable challenge. Here, we develop a transformer neural network model[2, 3] trained on neuronal spikes from intracranial microelectrodes recorded during a single viewing of an audiovisual episode. Combining spikes throughout the brain via cross-channel attention[4], capable of discovering neural patterns spread across brain regions and timescales, individual participant models predict m

Relational memory function in schizophrenia: Electrophysiological evidence for early perceptual and late associative abnormalities.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine encoding and retrieval during episodic memory in people with schizophrenia (SZ) and biological relatives of SZ (SZr). To isolate contextual from item-specific aspects of memory, we employed the Relational and Item-Specific Encoding (RISE) task. Twenty two healthy controls (HCs), 22 SZ, and 19 SZr, encoded visual depictions of objects when displayed alone (item-specific) or in pairs (relational encoding), and were later tested on recognition of specific objects and whether pairs of objects had appeared together. An early posterior component (P2

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Trains at 1 Hz Frequency of the Right Posterior Parietal Cortex Facilitate Recognition Memory.

Neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and brain stimulation studies have led to contrasting findings regarding the potential roles of the lateral parietal lobe in episodic memory. Studies using brain stimulation methods reported in the literature do not offer unequivocal findings on the interactions with stimulation location (left vs. right hemisphere) or timing of the stimulation (encoding vs. retrieval). To address these issues, active and sham 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) trains of 600 stimuli were applied over the right or left posterior parietal cortex (PPC) before

Differential impact of brain damage on the access mode to memory representations: an information theoretic approach.

Different access modes to information stored in long-term memory can lead to different distributions of errors in classification tasks. We have designed a famous faces memory classification task that allows for the extraction of a measure of metric content, an index of the relevance of semantic cues for classification performance. High levels of metric content are indicative of a relatively preferred semantic access mode, while low levels, and similar correct performance, suggest a preferential episodic access mode. Compared with normal controls, the metric content index was increased in patie

Visual short-term memory impairments in presymptomatic familial Alzheimer's disease: A longitudinal observational study.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) deficits including VSTM binding have been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) from preclinical to dementia stages, cross-sectionally. Yet, longitudinal investigations are lacking. The objective of this study was to evaluate VSTM function longitudinally and in relation to expected symptom onset in a cohort of familial Alzheimer's disease. Ninety-nine individuals (23 presymptomatic; 9 symptomatic and 67 controls) were included in an extension cross-sectional study and a sub-sample of 48 (23 presymptomatic carriers, 6 symptomatic and 19 controls), attending tw

Memory and cerebral blood flow in cases of transient global amnesia during and after the attack.

We administered various memory tests and neuroimaging examinations to four pure cases who met Hodges' clinical criteria for transient global amnesia (TGA), during and after the attack. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether procedural learning is acquired during TGA and whether priming effects are preserved during TGA, and to investigate the anatomical basis of various memory subcomponents through these cases. Episodic memory was severely disturbed only during TGA, consistent with previous studies. Procedural learning during TGA examined by a drawing skill test and a reading
