Estimation of economic injury levels and action thresholds for the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, on strawberry plants.

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is a high-value global crop, yet its productivity is severely constrained by the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. Developing localized economic thresholds is a cornerstone of sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to mitigate yield losses and reduce acaricide reliance. This two-season field study (2019-2020) investigated the quantitative relationship between T. urticae population density and strawberry yield in Egypt. Using varying infestation levels established via Chitosan (Top9 0.1%) treatments, linear regression and Chi-square

Treatment and eradication of murine fur mites: III. Treatment of a large mouse colony with ivermectin-compounded feed.

We determined the efficacy of ivermectin-compounded feed against fur mites in mice and describe its use to eradicate mites in vivaria holding approximately 30,000 cages. C57BL/6NCrl mice infested with Myobia musculi and Myocoptes musculinus were treated with ivermectin-compounded feed (approximate ingested dose, 1.3 mg/kg) for 1, 4, or 8 consecutive weeks. Regardless of treatment duration, all treated mice, as well as contact sentinels, remained free of fur mites for as long as 21 wk after treatment. No adverse effects were observed. Subsequently, facility-wide treatment was implemented in an

Scabies mite inactivated serine protease paralogs inhibit the human complement system.

Infestation of skin by the parasitic itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei afflicts 300 million people worldwide and there is a need for novel and efficient therapies. We have previously identified a multigene family of serine proteases comprising multiple catalytically inactive members (scabies mite-inactivated protease paralogs (SMIPPs)), which are secreted into the gut of S. scabiei. SMIPPs are located in the mite gut and in feces excreted into the upper epidermis. Scabies mites feed on epidermal protein, including host plasma; consequently, they are exposed to host defense mechanisms both internally

Sarcoptes scabiei on hedgehogs in New Zealand.

European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were introduced into New Zealand from Britain during the period from 1869 to the early 1900s. The only mite found on New Zealand hedgehogs in early studies was Caparinia tripilis, with Sarcoptes scabiei first being reported in 1996. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Sarcoptes infestation on hedgehogs in New Zealand, the number of mites found and the degree of mange observed. Dead hedgehogs were collected from veterinary clinics, rescue centres, members of the public and from road-kill. Twenty-one (55.3%) of the animals examined

Chemical and cultural control of Tropilaelaps mercedesae mites in honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies in Northern Thailand.

At least two parasitic mites have moved from Asian species of honeybees to infest Apis mellifera. Of these two, Varroa destructor is more widespread globally while Tropilaelaps mercedesae has remained largely in Asia. Tropilaelaps mites are most problematic when A. mellifera is managed outside its native range in contact with Asian species of Apis. In areas where this occurs, beekeepers of A. mellifera treat aggressively for Tropilaelaps and Varroa is either outcompeted or is controlled as a result of the aggressive treatment regime used against Tropilaelaps. Many mite control products used wo

Investigation of the in-vitro lethal effect of spilanthol on demodex and finding the most effective dose.

Demodex species are associated with many dermatological diseases, so an acaricidal agent that is effective against them and safe for skin applications may benefit many diseases. This study aims to investigate the anti-demodex potential of spilanthol, a product obtained from the Spilanthes Acmella plant, by determining the minimal effective dose for the first time in the literature. Demodex mites were obtained from 70 patients with standard superficial skin biopsy. Spilanthol extract was used at 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%. Standard immersion oil was used for the negative control, and permethrin 5%

Profiling of Dermanyssus gallinae genes involved in acaricide resistance.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, is a major threat for the poultry industry worldwide. Chemical compounds have been extensively used for PRM control, leading to selection of resistant mites. Molecular mechanisms of resistance have been investigated in arthropods, showing the role of target-site insensitivity and enhanced detoxification. Few studies are available about those mechanisms in D. gallinae, and none have yet focused on the expression levels of detoxification enzymes and other defense-related genes through RNA-seq. We tested PRM populations from Italy for their suscep

An efficient high-welfare feeding device for assessing northern fowl mite interventions in vivo: an improved method for the identification of protective antigens/systemic acaricides/repellent effect.

The northern fowl mite (NFM), Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite of domestic and wild birds, and it is an economic pest of laying hen in North America, China, India, Australia, Myanmar, and Brazil. Such an economically important pest remains neglected in many parts of the world, including Asian countries. Therefore, concerted action is required in both basic and applied research directed at the biology and control of this destructive pest. In the present study, we have developed a novel, high-welfare in vivo feeding capsule that would permit pre-screening of new

Temporal dynamics of direct reciprocal and indirect effects in a host-parasite network.

1. Temporal variation in the direct and indirect influence that hosts and parasites exert on each other is still poorly understood. However, variation in species' influence due to species and interactions turnover can have important consequences for host community dynamics and/or for parasite transmission dynamics, and eventually for the risk of zoonotic diseases. 2. We used data on a network of small mammals and their ectoparasites surveyed over 6 years to test hypotheses exploring (i) the temporal variability in direct and indirect influences species exert on each other in a community, and (

A redescription of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 (Acari: Laelapidae), from Trichosurus cunninghami (Marsupialia: Phalangeridae) from southern Australia.

The adults of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 are redescribed from a population of Trichosurus cunninghami Lindenmayer, Dubach et Viggers, 2002 in south-eastern Australia. The nymphal stages are described for the first time. Morphologically, T. dixous is similar to Trichosurolaelaps crassipes Womersley, 1956. Morphological differences between the prefemale deutonymphs and adult females of the two mite species are the presence of a single large ventral spur on tibia I of T. dixous. Males of T. dixous could not be distinguished from T. crassipes morphologically and the idiosomal length of

Dermatitis in a horse associated with the poultry mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

This is the first documented case report of dermatitis associated with the poultry mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) in a horse. It occurred in a 16-year-old horse that was in contact with domestic hens. Clinical signs consisted of severe pruritus, with self-induced hair loss mainly on the head. Despite the multiple skin scrapings performed during both day- and nighttime, mites were only isolated from the in-contact poultry and from the horse's environment, and not the horse. The animal was treated using a 2% permethrin solution, sprayed on the entire body once a week for 4 weeks, and by decontamina

Nasal mites (Acari:Halarachnidae) in the spotted seal, Phoca largha Pallas, and other pinnipeds of Alaskan waters.

The nasal passages of 349 pinnipeds of seven species were examined for halarachnid mites. Each of seven Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), 75 of 99 harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), and four of 71 spotted seals (P. largha) were infected, but none of 28 walruses (Odobenus rosmarus), 43 ringed seals (Phoca hispida), 58 ribbon seals (P. fasciata), and 43 bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) was infected. The sea lions harbored Orthohalarachne attenuata (Banks, 1910) and O. diminuata (Doetschman, 1944), and the harbor and spotted seals harbored Halarachne halichoeri Allman, 1847. The finding of H
