Comparison Study of Multiple Machine Learning Models for Predicting Anxiety Among Neurosurgical ICU Family Members Using Critical Care Family Needs Inventory.

AIM: This investigation intended to develop machine learning predictive models to predict anxiety status of neurosurgical ICU patients' relatives by taking all Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI) items as predictive variables, identify core unmet family demands strongly correlated with psychological distress, and select the optimal model for clinical rapid anxiety screening to support targeted precise nursing interventions. METHODS: A total of 1000 first-degree relatives of neurosurgical ICU patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score ≤ 8 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan

Assessment of oral mucositis in adult and pediatric oncology patients: an evidence-based approach.

Oral mucositis is a frequent side effect of cancer treatment and can lead to delayed treatment, reduced treatment dosage, altered nutrition, dehydration, infections, xerostomia, pain, and higher healthcare costs. Mucositis is defined as "inflammatory lesions of the oral and/or gastrointestinal tract caused by high-dose cancer therapies. Alimentary tract mucositis refers to the expression of mucosal injury across the continuum of oral and gastrointestinal mucosa, from the mouth to the anus" (Peterson, Bensadoun, & Roila, 2008, p. ii122). Evidence demonstrates that oral mucositis is quite distre

Nursing students' first clinical encounters with delirium: a qualitative study of experiential learning and professional development.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a complex neurocognitive condition that is often difficult to recognise and manage in clinical practice. Although nursing students receive theoretical education about delirium during undergraduate training, they may feel inadequately prepared when encountering patients with delirium in real clinical settings, reflecting a persistent theory-practice gap in nursing education. This study aimed to explore nursing students' experiences of their first clinical encounters with patients experiencing delirium. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 13 fi

Proactive huddles to reduce missed nursing care; the mediating roles of personal situational awareness and rational coordination: A cluster randomized pre post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care, defined as the failure to deliver essential patient care, has adverse effects on patients, nurses, and healthcare organizations. While efforts to reduce missed care exist, few interventions have been fully evaluated, and the mechanisms through which these interventions work remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate proactive huddles as a process to reduce missed nursing care in hospital inpatient wards. Additionally, the study examined the mediating role of personal situational awareness (cognitive mechanism) an

Depressive Symptoms, Sleep Quality, and Pain Are Associated With Frailty in Nursing Home Residents During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe effects on older adults. Depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, and pain are common in older adults with frailty. However, it is unknown the relationship between these symptoms and frailty in nursing home residents and the difference of importance between pain intensity and pain impact on frailty during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Therefore, this study aims to explore the associations between depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, pain intensity, and pain impact with frailty in older adults living in nursing homes. METHODS: In this cross-sect

Longitudinal Comparison of Stability and Sensitivity in Quality of Life Scores Among Nursing Home Residents With and Without Diagnoses of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prevalence of nursing home residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) has increased along with a growing consensus that person-centered ADRD care in nursing homes should maximize quality of life (QoL). However, concerns about whether residents with ADRD can make appropriate QoL judgments persist. This study assesses the stability and sensitivity of a self-reported, multidomain well-being QoL measure for nursing home residents with and without ADRD. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study linked the 2012-2015 Minnesota Nursing Home Resident QoL a

Individual and Organizational Factors Associated With Secondary Traumatic Stress in Emergency Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency nurses routinely care for patients and families experiencing traumatic events, death, and violence. Repeated exposure to others' trauma may contribute to secondary traumatic stress, a type of psychological distress with symptoms similar to those of posttraumatic stress disorder. Although emergency nurses experience high levels of secondary traumatic stress, the individual and organizational factors that contribute to secondary traumatic stress require further exploration. Identifying these factors will contribute to the development of interventions that target secondary

How nurses in acute care experience professional pride: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Professional pride is considered a positive emotion toward one's occupation. To date, there has been little research on professional pride among nurses, and the construct - including its defining characteristics, sources, and influencing factors - is still poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to explore how German nurses in acute care experience professional pride, including its sources and influencing factors, and the situations in which it arises. METHODS: Qualitative interpretative study using data from semi-structured interviews and focus groups with a purposive samp

Do nurses exercise power in rehabilitation wards?

AIM: Nowadays, there is a change in nursing policy. The nurse-centred model is shifting to the patient-centred model. Decision-making is therefore transferred to the customer (Power to the Patient). Data from literature mainly deals with acute care and long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether: i) a nurse-centred model is still effective in rehabilitation wards; ii) patients' dignity is nevertheless considered; iii) nurses experience role satisfaction in a rehabilitation setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was applied. Forty-eight nurses of our rehabilitat

Reorganization of nurse scheduling reduces the risk of healthcare associated infections.

Efficient prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HAIs) is still an open problem. Using contact data from wearable sensors at a short-stay geriatric ward, we propose a proof-of-concept modeling study that reorganizes nurse schedules for efficient infection control. This strategy switches and reassigns nurses' tasks through the optimization of shift timelines, while respecting feasibility constraints and satisfying patient-care requirements. Through a Susceptible-Colonized-Susceptible transmission model, we found that schedules reorganization reduced HAI risk by 27% (95% con

Relationship between social jetlag and body mass index in nurses working shift schedules: a cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between shift-working nurses' social jetlag and body mass index (BMI) and provide a theoretical basis for nursing managers to develop appropriate health interventions. Shift work is unavoidable in nursing and is associated with circadian rhythm disorders. Social jetlag is prevalent in shift-working nurses and is associated with adverse health outcomes (particularly metabolism-related indicators). BMI is a significant metabolic indicator, and research has demonstrated its effectiveness in predicting the formation of metabolic syndrome. The relationsh

The relationship between quick return shift schedules and burnout among nurses: A prospective repeated measures multi-source study.

BACKGROUND: In today's world, essential health care services are expected round the clock, leading to distinct shift work requirements. A notable aspect is the "quick return," where the rest interval between nursing shifts is <11 h. Preliminary research suggests a potential association between quick return schedules, diminished sleep quality, and possible nurse burnout. Yet, the motivation of nurses could potentially moderate this relationship. OBJECTIVE: To examine a moderated-mediation model, whereby sleep duration and nurse's motivation act together to mediate the link between quick return

Corporate working in health visiting: a concept analysis.

AIM OF THE PAPER: The aim of this paper is to examine individualized health visiting care and compare it to corporate working within a consensual management style. Corporate working has been discussed and used in many different ways since the idea first came to light at the end of the 1980s. Resource management makes it an appealing model, however, analysing how corporate working functions in the practice setting reveals the complexity of this method of service provision. BACKGROUND: This paper is based on a method of practice developed by health visitors in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, who i

Effects of FMEA-based bleeding risk-stratified nursing on recovery process and safety after coronary angiography.

BACKGROUND: Access-site bleeding and postprocedural pain after coronary angiography are linked by a "bleeding-inflammation-pain" positive feedback coupling mechanism. Traditional event-driven nursing models lack prospective risk stratification and preemptive control, making it difficult to break this vicious cycle at its source. PURPOSE: To systematically evaluate the effects of a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)-based bleeding risk-stratified nursing intervention on recovery process and safety outcomes in patients after coronary angiography. METHODS: A prospective randomized control

The Nexus of Practice Environment, Management, and Nursing Competency: A Cross-Sectional Study of Community Nursing Services in Saudi Arabia's Northern Border Region.

AIM: This study aimed to examine the associational role of the nursing practice environment (NPE) in the relationship between nursing management practices (NMP) and community health nursing competency (CCNC) among primary healthcare (PHC) nurses in Saudi Arabia. BACKGROUND: Although the NPE is established as a determinant of care quality and patient safety in hospital settings, its function as an organizational mechanism linking managerial practice to nursing competency in community and PHC contexts remains underinvestigated, particularly within administratively peripheral regions undergoing

The double policy squeeze on nursing faculties: A critical policy analysis of higher education reform, nursing workforce expansion and nurse educator sustainability.

Nursing workforce policy now asks education systems to expand domestic nurse supply while preparing graduates for older populations, community and primary care, digital health and more complex care pathways. At the same time, universities are expected to demonstrate curriculum innovation, student-centred teaching, quality assurance and institutional performance. The educator capacity required to carry this combined agenda is often assumed rather than planned. This critical policy analysis develops the concept of the double policy squeeze. Using China as an illustrative policy context and linki

Health dimensions and sex differences in frailty among nursing home residents: a cross-sectional study in Bilbao, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by increased vulnerability to stressors. Evidence on sex-specific determinants of frailty in cognitively intact nursing home residents remains limited. This study aimed to identify health dimensions associated with frailty in older women and men in nursing homes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 nursing homes in Bilbao, Spain. 147 residents aged ≥ 60 years without cognitive impairment were assessed using the Tilburg Frailty Indicator, together with validated measures of functional status, physical performance, emoti
