Submerging primary molars in Israeli rural children.

Dental study casts of 1530 Israeli rural children aged 3-13 years, evenly represented by the sexes, were examined for submersion of their primary molars, 24.8% of the children had one or more of these teeth affected. Out of 8250 teeth at risk, 8.81% were submerged to various degrees. Over 50% of them were primary mandibular first molars, close to 26% were primary mandibular second molars. The number of affected teeth rose with age in both sexes. Sex differences were significant only at 5-7 years, when girls were more frequently affected. Children with one or two affected teeth predominated. Th…

Ethnic variability in the prevalence of submerged primary molars.

Dental submergence, linked primarily with tooth ankylosis, has been reported to have a possible genetic predisposition. The submergence of primary molars was examined in a sample of 1530 children, 2.5-13.5 yr old, appertaining to seven ethnic groups living in Israel. It was found that the frequency of submergence varied among the ethnic groups, and that, on the whole, it was considerably higher than that in North American children.

Eruption rates of human upper third molars.

Human maxillary third molars have been observed to have maximum rates of eruption of approximately 1 mm/2 mo. Rates of less than 1 mm/6 mo have also been recorded. Maximum rates of eruption were associated with spacing of the dentition. Passive eruption in the form of gingival recession is an important factor resulting in the exposure of the clinical crown.

Re-evaluation of the morphocline of molar appearance in the primates.

Study of sequences of dental development and eruption of extant and applicable fossil prosimians, as well as similar data available on Anthropoidea and insectivores, indicates that the ancestral primate stock was characterized by the initial appearance of the anterior dentition, not the molars. From this primitive condition two morphoclines, not one, can be defined with the sharing of derived character states indicating sister-group relationships between Galaginae and Cheriogaleinae and between Lepilemur, Megaladapis, and Adapidae.

The second molar dilemma in orthodontics: to bond or not to bond?

OBJECTIVES: To compare orthodontic treatment (OT) outcome in adolescents undergoing nonextraction fixed OT with or without bonding of second molars using the score of the American Board of Orthodontics Cast Radiograph Evaluation (C-R-Eval). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included healthy adolescents with skeletal Class I or mild Class II/Class III malocclusion, normal or deep overbite (OB), and mild-to-moderate dental crowding (<5 mm) who underwent nonextraction fixed OT with ("bonded" group) or without ("not-bonded" group) bonding of second molars. Patient treatment records, pre- and post…

[Surgical uprighting of partially impacted second molars].

Eruption of mandibular second molars usually occurs around the age of 12. Incomplete eruption of second molars in such young patients can lead to loss of the molars, due to caries, root resorption or periodontal pathology. When a pathology of this kind develops, the treatment option for a mesially impacted molar is often to extract the tooth. If tooth eruption is, however, monitored closely by the dentist and/or orthodontist, early treatment can be considered in order to preserve the tooth. Partially impacted second molars can be placed in a functional anatomical position by surgical uprightin…

Transcriptome analysis of ankylosed primary molars with infraocclusion.

Primary molar ankylosis with infraocclusion can retard dental arch development and cause dental asymmetry. Despite its widespread prevalence, little is known about its molecular etiology and pathogenesis. To address this, RNA sequencing was used to generate transcriptomes of furcal bone from infraoccluded (n = 7) and non-infraoccluded (n = 9) primary second molars, all without succeeding biscuspids. Of the 18 529 expressed genes, 432 (2.3%) genes were differentially expressed between the two groups (false discovery rate < 0.05). Hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis showed c…

Quantitative characterizations of the Sharpey's fibers of rat molars.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Sharpey's fibers of periodontal ligament (PDL) anchor the PDL to alveolar bone and cementum and are essential for the function of PDL. While qualitative analyses of the Sharpey's fibers have been widely explored, a comprehensive quantitative characterization of the Sharpey's fibers is not available. In this work, we selected rat molars as a model and comprehensively characterized the PDL Sharpey's fibers (diameter, density, length, embedding angle, and insertion angle). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 rat mandibular molars, eight maxillary first molars, and …

Failure of eruption of permanent molars: a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have proposed protocols for the management of failure of eruption (FOE) of permanent molars with no clear consensus or guidelines. Accurate diagnosis is challenging but key for successful management. AIMS: Confirm key diagnostic criteria that will aid diagnostic differentiation between primary failure of eruption (PFE) and mechanical failure of eruption (MFE) of permanent molars and identify successful management strategies. DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive study. Patients diagnosed with FOE of permanent molars (excluding impaction) between January 2003 and Decem…

Bilateral mandibular fourth molars: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fourth molars are supernumerary teeth located distal to the third molars that may cause local alterations. Therefore an adequate diagnosis and treatment are essential. Removal of the supernumerary tooth and, in selected cases, maintenance of the tooth on the arch and frequent observation are the preferred treatments. If the extraction is recommended, it should be performed carefully by experienced oral surgeons to prevent damage to the anatomical structures. OBSERVATION: The oral examination of a 26-year-old woman revealed a left partially impacted mandibular molar responsible f…

Irregular periapical radiopacity in mandibular premolars and molars.

Increased deposition of cementum is observed in a wide number of both benign and malignant conditions. Many cases are often diagnosed during routine examination as an incidental finding. Diagnosing correctly without confusing it with other similarly appearing lesions, thus avoiding subjecting the patient to unnecessary investigations and stress, is of prime importance. We report one such case, where the patient presented with the routine complaint of a painful tooth, during the investigation of which he was also diagnosed with hypercementosis affecting the mandibular second premolars and molar…

Mini-implants: mechanical resource for molars uprighting.

INTRODUCTION: The early orthodontic treatment allows correction of skeletal discrepancies by growth control, and the elimination of deleterious habits, which are risk factors for the development of malocclusions, favoring for the correction of tooth positioning later in a second treatment stage. During development of teeth and occlusion, the mandibular second molars commonly erupt in the oral cavity after all other teeth of the anterior region. In their eruptive process there may be a condition known as tooth impaction, which precludes its complete eruption and requires proper uprighting treat…

[Bilateral mandibular fourth molars: a case report].

The occurrence of supernumerary teeth is a relatively rare dental dysplasia. Permanent fourth molars are seldom observed in humans. A case of bilateral mandibular fourth molar is reported in this paper.
