A Moral or Medical Problem? The Relationship between Legal Penalties and Treatment Practices for Opioid Use Disorders in Pregnant Women.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in pregnant women with opioid use disorders, the standard of care, and state laws that permit child abuse charges for illicit drug use during pregnancy has not been described. METHODS: Using publicly available data on substance abuse treatment in the United States, we describe patterns in the use of MAT for pregnant women with opioid use disorders in states with prenatal child abuse laws compared with states without such laws. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to predict the presence or absence of

Compassion fatigue, moral distress, and work engagement in surgical intensive care unit trauma nurses: a pilot study.

Preparation for replacing the large proportion of staff nurses reaching retirement age in the next few decades in the United States is essential to continue delivering high-quality nursing care and improving patient outcomes. Retaining experienced critical care nurses is imperative to successfully implementing the orientation of new inexperienced critical care nurses. It is important to understand factors that affect work engagement to develop strategies that enhance nurse retention and improve the quality of patient care. Nurses' experience of moral distress has been measured in medical inten

The role of substance use and morality in violent crime - a qualitative study among imprisoned individuals in opioid maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is regarded as a crime control measure. Yet, some individuals are charged with violent criminal offenses while enrolled in OMT. This article aims to generate nuanced knowledge about violent crime among a group of imprisoned, OMT-enrolled individuals by exploring their understandings of the role of substances in violent crime prior to and during OMT, moral values related to violent crime, and post-crime processing of their moral transgressions. METHODS: Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews were undertaken among 12 OMT-enrolled prisoners. The in

Doing the right thing for one's children: deciding whether to take the genetic test for Huntington's disease as a moral dilemma.

This is a qualitative examination of candidates' decision-making in relation to the genetic test for Huntington's disease. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine participants who were asked about factors influencing their decision whether to take up predictive genetic testing. Transcripts of interviews were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis to elicit emergent themes. A key factor for participants was to do the right thing for their children. Interestingly, this factor presents a moral dilemma to participants and can direct them either towards or away from testi

The interactions of ethical notions and moral values of immediate stakeholders of immunisation services in two Indian states: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the existing norms regarding immunisation within the communities and the ethical notions that govern the actions of different health professionals and their collective synergistic or conflicting effects on the governance of the programme. DESIGN: We used descriptive and analytical qualitative methods as it suited the research question. SETTING: The data were collected from areas under 16 primary health centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu identified through a three-step sampling process. PARTICIPANTS: This involved in-depth interviews with stakeholders including

Parental duties and prenatal screening: does an offer of prenatal screening lead women to believe that they are morally compelled to test?

BACKGROUND: in debates around prenatal screening, it is frequently argued that responsible parenthood implies the acquisition of all available medical information about the health of a fetus, and use of this information to benefit the future child. OBJECTIVE: to analyse whether an offer of a prenatal test leads women to believe that they are morally obliged to control the health of their fetus. DESIGN: a substudy within a randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to assess the decision-making process of women when confronted with an offer of a prenatal screening test. PARTICIPANTS: 111 women

[Decision making, empathy and morality in psychopaths: does empirical research offer new perspectives concerning legal responsibility?].

Psychopathy is a well explored dimensional construct only partially overlapping with dissocial personality disorder according to ICD-10. Until now, psychopaths have not been assessed as having diminished legal responsibility, unless they show impulsive or dissocial behaviour in an early stage of development, since they are considered able to adapt themselves to social norms. This forensic practice has been criticised from a deterministic-neurobiological point of view. This article discusses whether the latest empirical results on the psychopath's capacity for decision-making, empathy, and mora

Peer and cyber aggression in secondary school students: the role of moral disengagement, hostile attribution bias, and outcome expectancies.

This study investigated the relationship between cognitive mechanisms, applied by people to rationalize and justify harmful acts, and engagement in traditional peer and cyber aggression among school children. We examined the contribution of moral disengagement (MD), hostile attribution bias, and outcome expectancies, and we further explored the individual contribution of each MD mechanism. Our aim was to identify shared and unique cognitive factors of the two forms of aggression. Three hundred and thirty-nine secondary school children completed self-report measures that assessed MD, hostile at

Clock genes beyond the clock: CLOCK genotype biases neural correlates of moral valence decision in depressed patients.

Gene polymorphisms in the mammalian biological clock system influence individual rhythms. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3' flanking region of CLOCK (3111 T/C; rs1801260) influenced diurnal preference in healthy humans and caused sleep phase delay and insomnia in patients affected by bipolar disorder. Genes of the biological clock are expressed in many brain structures other than in the 'master clock' suprachiasmatic nuclei. These areas, such as cingulate cortex, are involved in the control of many human behaviors. Clock genes could then bias 'nonclock' functions such as informa

Medical abortion: ethics, laws and religious points of view, A study by the 1994-1995 Ethics and Morals Committee of the ISPN.

Central nervous system malformations are now frequently detected prenatally. Unfortunately, the progress in diagnosis having far outstripped that in therapeutics, the only question to answer is usually whether the pregnancy should be continued or terminated. Pediatric neurosurgeons have to deal with such problems more and more often. They are asked to give an opinion on the prognosis. In many cases the law requires their involvement in the decision about the possibility of a "therapeutic", or more correctly a medical, abortion. The final decision is based on the religious attitutes of the fami

Paternal Parenting Styles and Filial Piety Toward Fathers Among Chinese Adolescents: The Roles of Conscientiousness and Moral Identity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that caregivers' parenting styles are associated with children' filial piety toward parents. However, the underlying mechanisms linking parenting styles to filial piety toward parents remain largely unspecified. Additionally, prior research commonly classifies family parenting styles into positive parenting and negative parenting, neglecting the potential differential impacts and pathways of different types of paternal parenting styles on filial piety toward fathers. PURPOSE: Drawing on theoretical and empirical evidence, this study investigated

Empathy as a Conditional Resource: System-Level Moral Distress as an Indirect Pathway in the Associations of Empathy with Burnout and Turnover Intention.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the relationship between empathy and burnout among nurses remains inconsistent. Moral distress may help explain this complexity. Given the associations of moral distress and burnout with turnover intention, it remains insufficiently understood how empathy is linked to these outcomes through multidimensional moral distress, which is a critical concern for nursing management. AIM: This study examined how empathy relates to burnout and turnover intention among nurses, focusing on indirect associations involving multidimensional moral distress and burnout. METHODS:

Reading Intention Where There Is None: Neurobehavioral Correlates of Intention Attribution of Morally Ambiguous Scenarios in Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by altered social cognition, including a tendency to bias intention attribution in ambiguous situations. However, the neurobehavioral mechanisms underlying this tendency remain poorly understood. Here, we examined whether intention attribution is disturbed in BPD and reflected in behavioral bias and altered neural processing of morally ambiguous social information. METHODS: A total of 71 individuals with BPD (55 female, 16 male) and 72 healthy controls (56 female, 16 male) were included. Participants viewed harm-based scenario

When being good means being weak: Preschoolers' dual evaluation of victims along moral and agentic dimensions.

Across 4 experimental studies (N = 526), we investigated whether children judge victims along 2 fundamental dimensions of social cognition, morality and agency/competence, and whether attributions of blame moderate these evaluations. Young children (4-6 years; White, mixed socioeconomic backgrounds; mid-sized European city; data collected 2023-2025) observed puppet-based scenarios depicting moral transgressions, accidents, or control situations. Results consistently showed that children judged victims as more moral than non-victims, replicating the "virtuous victim" effect. However, victims we

Predictive Role of Moral Injury and Burnout in Professional Communication: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Operating Room Nurses.

AIM(S): This study examined the association of moral injury and burnout with professional communication among operating room (OR) nurses in Southern Iran. BACKGROUND: Effective professional communication is essential for surgical teamwork and patient safety. However, limited context-specific evidence is available on how moral injury and burnout are jointly associated with the quality of professional communication among OR nurses. Addressing this gap may help inform strategies to improve staff well-being, team functioning, and patient safety in high-stakes perioperative settings. METHODS: A c

Transgressions of self and others: Exploring the associations between moral injury symptoms, social connectedness, and psychological well-being.

OBJECTIVE: Moral injury and lack of social connectedness are negatively associated with psychological well-being for those who have transitioned from military to civilian roles. However, the way in which the experiences of moral injury shape veterans' social connectedness and psychological well-being is less well understood. The present study explores the nature of the relationships between aspects of moral injury, social connectedness, and psychological well-being. METHOD: Australian Defence Force veterans (N = 240; Mage = 50.86, SDage = 12.77; 86.5% male) participated in an online survey, p

From Pornography to Somatic Symptoms. A Moderated Mediation Model Involving Moral Disapproval of Pornography and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine the association between problematic pornography consumption (PPC) and somatic symptoms, and to investigate whether difficulties in emotion regulation and moral disapproval of pornography play a role in this relationship. METHOD: A sample of 321 individuals, aged between 18 and 64 years (M = 24.85, SD = 8.93), completed self-report measures assessing problematic pornography consumption, difficulties in emotion regulation, somatic symptoms, frequency of pornography use, and moral disapproval of pornography. RESULTS: PPC was positively associated wi

Children's Everyday Actions After Disaster: Cultural Meaning, Developmental Timing, and Moral Agency in Post-disaster Japan.

Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, children in affected regions exhibited everyday behaviors that challenge conventional psychological interpretations. Drawing on ethnographic field observations conducted in schools, shelters, and temporary housing in Miyagi Prefecture between March 2011 and March 2012, with follow-up observations from 2012 to 2013, this study examines five vignettes of children's post-disaster behaviors: hiding shoes, experiencing perceived scarcity related to school lunches, impulsive spending, giving away sweets and supplies, and engaging in silent play in comm
