Vestibular Morphological Asymmetry Associated With Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Sensory conflicts leading to motion sickness can occur not only between but also within sensory modalities. The vestibular organs are located in both left and right inner ears, and their misalignment can be a source of self-motion related sensory conflicts. In the current study, using inner ear magnetic resonance imaging, we examined whether morphological asymmetry of the bilateral vestibular organs was associated with motion sickness susceptibility. The results showed a larger position asymmetry of bilateral vestibular organs in individuals with high rather than low susceptibility. In additio…

Mandibular border movements: The two envelopes of motion.

BACKGROUND: The envelope of motion is a diagrammatic representation of the mandibular border movements. Classically, those movements are carried out eccentrically; starting from the position of maximal intercuspation, the mandible describes an excursion movement until reaching maximal mouth opening. Reverse movements would describe a different path, but up to now concentric development of mandibular border movements has not been considered. Literature states that beyond mandibular border movements limits, no movement is possible. Therefore, it is of great interest to compare both paths-both en…

Visual perception of joint stiffness from multijoint motion.

Humans have an astonishing ability to extract hidden information from the movements of others. For example, even with limited kinematic information, humans can distinguish between biological and nonbiological motion, identify the age and gender of a human demonstrator, and recognize what action a human demonstrator is performing. It is unknown, however, whether they can also estimate hidden mechanical properties of another's limbs simply by observing their motions. Strictly speaking, identifying an object's mechanical properties, such as stiffness, requires contact. With only motion informatio…

Spinopelvic Motion and Impingement in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

The stability of a total hip arthroplasty relies on proper positioning of the acetabular cup. Recent research has shown that this cup positi … cetabulum. This helps prevent posterior impingement and anterior hip dislocations. When lumbosacral motion becomes pathologic, spinopelvic motion changes and acetabular cup orientation is affected. In cases of decreased lumbosacral motion, patients rely on greater hip motion to reach standing or sitting positions. This can cause pathologic impingement. I …

Movement Symmetry Assessment by Bilateral Motion Data Fusion.

OBJECTIVE: A new approach, named bilateral motion data fusion, was proposed for the analysis of movement symmetry, which takes advantage of cross-information between both sides of the body and processes the unilateral motion data at the same time. METHODS: This was accomplished using canonical correlation analysis and joint independent component analysis. It should be noted that human movements include many categories, which cannot be enumerated one by one. Therefore, the gait rhythm fluctuations of the healthy subjects and patients with neurodegenerative diseases were employed as an example …

Outcomes of Intubation-induced Vocal Fold Motion Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold motion impairment (VFMI) is a potential consequence of intubation. Studies describing the natural course of this complication are largely case reports. This study aims to evaluate outcomes for a cohort of patients who endured varying degrees of vocal fold immobility or hypomobility post-intubation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Upon excluding known causes of VFMI, such as surgeries and tumors involving the head and neck, VFMI cases (ICD-9 diagnosis code 478.3) were identified from 2008 to 2014 at a regional healthcare institution. A total of 2,387 w…

Neural mechanisms of motion perceptual learning in noise.

Practice improves our perceptual ability. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this experience-dependent plasticity in adult brain remain unclear. Here, we studied the long-term neural correlates of motion perceptual learning. Subjects' behavioral performance and BOLD signals were tracked before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after practicing a motion direction discrimination task in noise over six daily sessions. Parallel to the specificity and persistency of the behavioral learning effect, we found that training sharpened the cortical tuning in MT, and enhanced the connectivity strengt…

Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) in pediatric otolaryngology.

INTRODUCTION: Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is a condition in which the vocal cords exhibit inappropriate inspiratory adduction, and it has been poorly studied in the pediatric population. METHODS: Pediatric patients diagnosed with PVCM by a pediatric otolaryngologist and doctor of speech pathology from 2008 to 2012 were reviewed. Patients in whom another cause for their respiratory disturbance was eventually identified were excluded. Patient demographics, characteristics, treatment, and outcomes were reviewed. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at our institution…

Conserved linear dynamics of single-molecule Brownian motion.

Macromolecular diffusion in homogeneous fluid at length scales greater than the size of the molecule is regarded as a random process. The mean-squared displacement (MSD) of molecules in this regime increases linearly with time. Here we show that non-random motion of DNA molecules in this regime that is undetectable by the MSD analysis can be quantified by characterizing the molecular motion relative to a latticed frame of reference. Our lattice occupancy analysis reveals unexpected sub-modes of motion of DNA that deviate from expected random motion in the linear, diffusive regime. We demonstra…

Ultrasound-Based Sensing Models for Finger Motion Classification.

Motions of the fingers are complex since hand grasping and manipulation are conducted by spatial and temporal coordination of forearm muscles and tendons. The dominant methods based on surface electromyography (sEMG) could not offer satisfactory solutions for finger motion classification due to its inherent nature of measuring the electrical activity of motor units at the skin's surface. In order to recognize morphological changes of forearm muscles for accurate hand motion prediction, ultrasound imaging is employed to investigate the feasibility of detecting mechanical deformation of deep mus…

Dysregulation of visual motion inhibition in major depression.

Individuals with depression show depleted concentrations of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in occipital (visual) cortex, predicting weakened inhibition within their visual systems. Yet, visual inhibition in depression remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, we examined the inhibitory process of center-surround suppression (CSS) of visual motion in depressed individuals. Perceptual performance in discriminating the direction of motion was measured as a function of stimulus presentation time and contrast in depressed individuals (n=27) and controls (n=22). CSS was operationalized as …

Impaired perception of biological motion in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: We examined biological motion perception in Parkinson's disease (PD). Biological motion perception is related to one's own motor function and depends on the integrity of brain areas affected in PD, including posterior superior temporal sulcus. If deficits in biological motion perception exist, they may be specific to perceiving natural/fast walking patterns that individuals with PD can no longer perform, and may correlate with disease-related motor dysfunction. METHOD: Twenty-six nondemented individuals with PD and 24 control participants viewed videos of point-light walkers and sc…

Co-Motion: Mobility and Wellbeing in Later Life.

In considering the role of place in supporting positive well-being choices for all, including older people, there has been an almost exclusive focus on issues of design in the public realm. Emerging findings from the Co-Motion project suggest that the experience of being out and about can be also facilitated or profoundly damaged by the attitudes and behaviours of fellow public realm users.

Self-motion direction discrimination in the visually impaired.

Despite the close interrelation between vestibular and visual processing (e.g., vestibulo-ocular reflex), surprisingly little is known about vestibular function in visually impaired people. In this study, we investigated thresholds of passive whole-body motion discrimination (leftward vs. rightward) in nine visually impaired participants and nine age-matched sighted controls. Participants were rotated in yaw, tilted in roll, and translated along the interaural axis at two different frequencies (0.33 and 2 Hz) by means of a motion platform. Superior performance of visually impaired participants…

Field-like interactions between motion-based reference frames.

A reference frame is required to specify how motion is perceived. For example, the motion of part of an object is usually perceived relative to the motion of the object itself. Johansson (Psychological Research, 38, 379-393, 1976) proposed that the perceptual system carries out a vector decomposition, which rewsults in common and relative motion percepts. Because vector decomposition is an ill-posed problem, several studies have introduced constraints by means of which the number of solutions can be substantially reduced. Here, we have adopted an alternative approach and studied how, rather th…

Motion sickness, nausea and thermoregulation: The "toxic" hypothesis.

Principal symptoms of motion sickness in humans include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating. It is less known that motion sickness also affects thermoregulation, and the purpose of this review is to present and discuss existing data related to this subject. Hypothermia during seasickness was firstly noted nearly 150 years ago, but detailed studies of this phenomenon were conducted only during the last 2 decades. Motion sickness-induced hypothermia is philogenetically quite broadly expressed as besides humans, it has been reported in rats, musk shrews and mice. Evidence from human …

Determinants of hemodialysis-induced segmental wall motion abnormalities.

Patients who demonstrate worsening of cardiac wall motion (WM) during hemodialysis have higher 1-year mortality. We sought to identify risk factors for dialysis-induced WM abnormalities. Additionally, we examined the effects of hemodialysis on other parameters of cardiac function. Forty patients underwent echocardiography directly before dialysis and during the last hour of dialysis (79 dialysis sessions). Candidate predictors for intradialytic worsening of WM included age, a history of heart failure (HF) or coronary artery disease, changes in blood pressure or heart rate, high sensitivity car…

Multisensory self-motion compensation during object trajectory judgments.

Judging object trajectory during self-motion is a fundamental ability for mobile organisms interacting with their environment. This fundamental ability requires the nervous system to compensate for the visual consequences of self-motion in order to make accurate judgments, but the mechanisms of this compensation are poorly understood. We comprehensively examined both the accuracy and precision of observers' ability to judge object trajectory in the world when self-motion was defined by vestibular, visual, or combined visual-vestibular cues. Without decision feedback, subjects demonstrated no c…
