The role of vision in sensory integration models for predicting motion perception and sickness.

Users of automated vehicles will engage in other activities and take their eyes off the road, making them prone to motion sickness. To resolve this, the current paper validates models predicting sickness in response to motion and visual conditions. We validate published models of vestibular and visual sensory integration that have been used for predicting motion sickness through sensory conflict. We use naturalistic driving data and laboratory motion (and vection) paradigms, such as sinusoidal translation and rotation at different frequencies, Earth-Vertical Axis Rotation, Off-Vertical Axis Ro…

Placebo effects on nausea and motion sickness are resistant to experimentally-induced stress.

Nausea often occurs in stressful situations, such as chemotherapy or surgery. Clinically relevant placebo effects in nausea have been demonstrated, but it remains unclear whether stress has an impact on these effects. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the interplay between acute stress and placebo effects in nausea. 80 healthy female volunteers susceptible to motion sickness were randomly assigned to either the Maastricht Acute Stress Test or a non-stress control condition, and to either placebo treatment or no treatment. Nausea was induced by a virtual vection drum and beh…

Motion Sickness Predictors in College Students and Their First Experience Sailing at Sea.

INTRODUCTION: Individual motion sickness susceptibility can be rapidly estimated by the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ), but its stability is affected by various factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the involved predictive factors of motion sickness screened with uniform samples of Chinese college students and to verify the individual susceptibility difference in marine navigation.METHODS: A total of 1051 college students (719 men, 332 women; mean age: 18.32 ± 0.65 yr) completed the MSSQ. Another 42 men (mean age: 21.12 ± 1.10 yr) took part in 2 separate vo…

An Active Suspension System for Mitigating Motion Sickness and Enabling Reading in a Car.

INTRODUCTION: The advent of autonomous automobiles raises new challenges for maintaining passenger safety and comfort. The challenge addressed here is how to predict and mitigate motion sickness when passengers read in a moving vehicle. METHODS: We utilized a car equipped with a commercial active suspension system developed for attenuating the transmission of road surface fluctuations to passengers. The system was used to reproduce, in a parked car, either the vibrations that would be experienced in a moving car equipped with a conventional suspension system (unmitigated ride) or the attenuat…

The efficacy of airflow and seat vibration on reducing visually induced motion sickness.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known sensation in virtual environments and simulators, typically characterized by a variety of symptoms such as pallor, sweating, dizziness, fatigue, and/or nausea. Numerous methods to reduce VIMS have been previously introduced; however, a reliable countermeasure is still missing. In the present study, the effect of airflow and seat vibration to alleviate VIMS was investigated. Eighty-two participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups (airflow, vibration, combined airflow and vibration, and control) and then exposed to a 15 min lon…

Contribution of intravestibular sensory conflict to motion sickness and dizziness in migraine disorders.

Migraine is associated with enhanced motion sickness susceptibility and can cause episodic vertigo [vestibular migraine (VM)], but the mechanisms relating migraine to these vestibular symptoms remain uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that the central integration of rotational cues (from the semicircular canals) and gravitational cues (from the otolith organs) is abnormal in migraine patients. A postrotational tilt paradigm generated a conflict between canal cues (which indicate the head is rotating) and otolith cues (which indicate the head is tilted and stationary), and eye movements were m…

Psychometric Properties of the Greek Version of the Gianaros Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: The Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) was developed in order to assess the multiple dimensions of the motion sickness syndrome (gastrointestinal, central nervous system, peripheral, and sopite-related symptoms). The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the MSAQ. METHODS: The MSAQ was translated into Greek and then translated back into English. Minor differences between the two texts were corrected. The Greek version was then administered to male subjects before and after nauseogenic motion stimulation. With the use o…

Sex Differences in the Incidence of Motion Sickness Induced by Linear Visual Oscillation.

BACKGROUND: In field studies, motion sickness is more common among women than among men. In laboratory research sex differences have been smaller, or absent. However, laboratory research on sex differences in motion sickness has employed exclusively rotational motion stimuli. We evaluated sex differences when motion sickness was induced using linear visual oscillation. METHOD: Standing subjects were exposed to linear visual oscillation along the line of sight. We separately assessed the incidence of motion sickness and the severity of symptoms that are associated with motion sickness. RESULT…

Impact of alignment to gravito-inertial force on motion sickness and cardiopulmonary variables.

INTRODUCTION: In tilting trains partial alignment to the gravito-inertial force (GIF) in the curves seems to be the best tilt compensation to reduce the incidence of motion sickness. We investigated the effect of alignment to the GIF on the development of motion sickness during low-frequency horizontal motion. METHODS: There were 12 healthy subjects who participated. The design was a three-period, single-blind, crossover trial, counterbalanced for order. Cardiopulmonary measurements, Misery SCores (MISC), and questionnaire data (Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire, Nijmegen Questionn…

Could sound be used as a strategy for reducing symptoms of perceived motion sickness?

BACKGROUND: Working while exposed to motions, physically and psychologically affects a person. Traditionally, motion sickness symptom reduction has implied use of medication, which can lead to detrimental effects on performance. Non-pharmaceutical strategies, in turn, often require cognitive and perceptual attention. Hence, for people working in high demand environments where it is impossible to reallocate focus of attention, other strategies are called upon. The aim of the study was to investigate possible impact of a mitigation strategy on perceived motion sickness and psychophysiological re…

The role of vection, eye movements and postural instability in the etiology of motion sickness.

Motion sickness is a term that is commonly used to describe the ill effects of many provocative motion (e.g. seagoing or air travel) and apparent motion (e.g. IMAX movies and virtual reality) environments on human well-being and performance. It can be extremely debilitating and yet we do not have a precise understanding of its cause. This study evaluates the importance of three factors that are purported to be involved in the etiology of motion sickness (MS). Most provocative motion environments cause three distinct, but possibly related, responses: reflexive eye movements (EM), sensory confli…

Effects of drug countermeasures for space motion sickness on working memory in humans.

Space motion sickness (SMS) is a problem during the first 72 h of space flight and during transitions from different gravity environments. There currently are no effective drug countermeasures for SMS that also accommodate the retention of optimal cognitive function. This creates a dilemma for astronauts because cognitive skills are particularly important during gravity transitions (e.g., take-off and landing). To quantify the cognitive side effects of potential drug countermeasures, an automated delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) procedure was used to assess visual working memory before and af…

Motion sickness susceptibility due to a small hematoma in the right supramarginal gyrus.

We describe a unique case of a woman who twice experienced episodes of susceptibility to motion sickness that lasted for several months. Both times a small hemorrhage from a cavernous angioma in the supramarginal gyrus (SMG) was detected by MRI. Because the SMG is part of area 7, which belongs to a network of multisensory visual-vestibular cortical areas, we conclude that a small lesion there can cause motion sickness susceptibility.

Slow deep breathing prevents the development of tachygastria and symptoms of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to see if slow deep breathing, a non-pharmacological procedure known to increase parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, would prevent the development of gastric dysrhythmias and symptoms of motion sickness when subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. METHODS: Participating in this study were 46 healthy males and females aged 17-26 who were pre-tested in the rotating drum and found to be susceptible to motion sickness. They were randomly placed into one of the following three conditions: Slow Deep Breathing (n = 18), Counting Brea…

Motion sickness in public road transport: the effect of driver, route and vehicle.

Relationships between vehicle motion and passenger sickness have been investigated in a survey of 3256 passengers travelling on 56 mainland … ss-country where magnitudes of lateral vehicle motion were significantly higher. Lateral motion and motion sickness increased from the front to the rear of each vehicle. No significant differences in sickness were found between the five different vehicle types used in the study. The applicability of a motion sickness dose model to these data is discussed.
